Meryl Streep has been cast as pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston, and Julia Roberts will play her complicated adult daughter Barbara in August: Osage County, based on the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by Tracy Letts. Deadline first reported the pairing on the project in 2010. John Wells (Shameless) will direct. August is a dark and humorous story of the of the Weston family women. The strong-willed characters’ lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein made the announcement Wednesday about the project that will begin filming this fall. Commented Roberts, “After seeing Meryl Streep’s mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co star with her.” Streep recently received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. She picked up a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the film also in release by TWC.

I have high expectations for this film adaptation. The addition of Julia Roberts is not helping.
If Julia falls out Patricia Clarkson is an excellent notion but Julia will be great too. A lot of great parts to be cast there. It’s kind of sprawling. And Streep is ideal.
My vote is for Elizabeth Reaser and Mary-Louise Parker as Karen and Ivy (the other sisters).
Amy Ryan and Laura Linney as the other sisters.
If HARRY’S LAW isn’t renewed, I’d love to see Kathy Bates as Mattie Fae (the sister of Streep’s character.) Otherwise, Margo Martindale would be superb, especially since A GIFTED MAN is not likely to return.
Mary Louise Parker is inspired casting for Ivy, Vee, but I’m not as sold on the idea of Reaser as Karen. I like the idea of Amy Adams in that role, especially because I think we’ll see them playing fast and loose with the ages of the sisters in comparison to how they’re written in the play. A previous report around the time Streep and Roberts were rumored to be attached claimed that Parker and Natalie Portman were in line to play Ivy and Karen, though I can’t see Portman in that role at all. She’s much more of an Ivy.
Hmm, I guess the only question remains : will it be her 18th OR 19th ? Could ‘Great Hope Springs’ be her 18th ? We’ll see!
*Well spoken, Julia.*

I’m a fan of Julia’s but I’m not sure she has the depth as an actress to pull off this pivotal role in the film. She’s a somewhat two-dimensional actress and this is a very three-dimensional role. (Same problem as her performance in “Closer”). We’ll see…
Julia Roberts is so wrong for this – Where’s Cate Blanchett?
Violet Weston is a dream role on the scale of Scarlett O’Hara. This project should generate double digit Oscar nominations.
I would love to see Jessica Lange as Mattie Fae. She and Streep are both such powerful actresses and would be excellent in their roles. I think Julia will be fine as Barbara. As far as the men’s roles they don’t really need anyone of significance since they are all secondary to the story.
If they shift the ages of the sisters younger, I think Rachel McAdams would make an amazing Ivy! She is so talented, but really needs to take on better roles to showcase it. (maybe needs better reps, too? )
Chloe Moretz would be great as Jean too.
