Ecosse Films today announced that British-born Academy® award nominated actress NAOMI WATTS (J. Edgar, Eastern Promises, Fair Game, 21 Grams) will play the role of Princess Diana in the upcoming movie CAUGHT IN FLIGHT.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Academy® Award nominated Downfall), and based on the screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys, production will begin in the UK later this year.
CAUGHT IN FLIGHT is a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the last two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to achieve her defining successes evolving into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.
Speaking earlier, Naomi Watts, who will next be seen starring in The Impossible opposite Ewan McGregor said: ‘it is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.’
Director, Oliver Hirschbiegel commented: ‘I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.’
Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein stated: ‘It is very exciting to be working with one of our finest actresses, Naomi Watts, on what will be a powerful and poignant film. She will encompass the role beautifully.’

Meh, Jessica Chastain would have been a better choice.
Jessica Chastain is too young. This is about the last years of Diana’s life. Naomi Watts is fine casting.
Since Jessica Chastain..arrived on the scene she has done too much..overexposed..lying about her real age..trying to hog the spotlight..it probably rubs people the wrong way..she is not a revelation…a decent actress but no revelation..congrats Naomi
I’ve been reading a lot about this “lying about her real age” thing, but so far I’ve attributed this rumor to internet haters. Hope it’s not true, as I don’t see why she’d have to lie about it.
I hope somebody makes a “Hitler learns Naomi Watts will be playing Princess Diana” video for Youtube!
look, by all accounts, Diana was not on an upward slope prior to her peculiar death. Dodi wasn’t her soul mate. Let’s get real about this.
What’s with these movies whitewashing the truth of these elite tools?
Her life was quite sad. At least they found the best person to play her.
There are so many Diana-projects in the air : Naomi Watts in this, Jessica Chastain in that other one, and not that long ago, there was a rumor about Pathe fast-tracking a biopic starring Keira Knightley as Diana and Helen Mirren as Diana’s mother…so will any of these EVER go into production ?
I think this one with Naomi Watts has the best shot, especially because it seems to be a love letter to Diana, unlike the Chastain-project. Anyway, I love all three actresses, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
For what it’s worth, it’s nice to see Naomi Watts land ANOTHER iconic role…there was a project, ‘Blonde’ announced around a year ago, in which she was supposed to play Marilyn Monroe…but I guess after ‘My Week with Marilyn’, ‘Blonde’ will never happen.
Why all the hate towards Naomi Watts? She is a superb actress who will do an excellent job playing one of the most iconic figures in recent history. Did she run over your cat or something?
Oh no what happened to Jessica???? She would’ve been amazing..
Jessica is a much better actress. nothing personal against watts, she is just an ordinary talent in a good looking package.
I would never have thought of seeing Naomi Watts play Diana. The title is pretty cool.
There have already been enough films of Diana. Let her spirit rest in peace and stop dredging up details of her life. Out of respect for Diana’s memory, I wish the media, tabloids, filmakers would leave her alone. All of this reminds me of vultures picking at bones….appalling! I won’t watch this film and I think it is mercenary to keep making money off of Diana, even 15 years after her tragic death. It is disrespectful to Diana’s wonderful son’s and hurtful to Diana’s family to keep making money off of her – even in her death.
