The Weinstein Co’s Oscar front-runner The Artist will make its pay TV debut on Netflix rather than on traditional cable as part of a multi-year licensing agreement announced today. The deal will make Weinstein foreign-language films, documentaries and other titles available exclusively to Netflix’s streaming subscribers
in the U.S. within a year of their theatrical release. It’s the first such agreement between Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s indie distributor and Netflix; terms weren’t disclosed. Undefeated, nominated for a Documentary Feature Oscar, also will make its pay-TV debut on the streaming service. Other Weinstein titles included in the arrangement are Sarah’s Key, W.E. and Coriolanus. ”It is a fantastic coup for Netflix to acquire The Artist and the package of additional titles,” Weinstein co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said today in a release announcing the pact. “With this deal, a company that loves movies, Netflix, joins forces with a company that is built on that same love.”

The Artist sucks and the academy will prove this sunday how out of touch they are again.
The academy is obviously out of touch and maybe its not the best picture of the year. But The Artist was a beautiful film; you’ve probably never seen it.
whoa there sport… How does The Artist suck? Can you make an almost 2 hour film in black and white, with no dialogue that doesnt make you fall asleep and that actually has a plot that you can follow? The Artist proves that at least someone in this world still knows what movie making is all about and this movie proves that the art of film making is all in your ability to use visuals to tell your story and not just dialogue that spells out everything for you. I graduated from USC film school, and you dont get to even touch a camera until your junior year and in this class you make 5 short films, well for the first 2 you arent allowed to use any sound at all, then the third film you are allowed to have music. The purpose behind this is to teach us how to tell a story with the camera, and not by just having a character explain everything because thats what REAL film making is all about. If you can tell a story with a beginning middle and end within 3 minutes without any dialogue, then you are a true filmmaker.
The Artist is a film student’s wetdream of a movie. I know im jealous, I could never make a movie as well as this and I am happy that Netflix is making distribution deals like this because within 10 years no one will be buying DVDS, everything will be streamed online. Hopefully more filmmakers will start making well crafted and visually appealing films like this and stop making all of these bullshit remakes, redoes and over-the-top special effect / animated films that are just there to make money. Dont get me wrong, its called the movie business for a reason, we all are in this to pay the bills, but I feel fimmakers are thinking more about how they can make their movie better in order to make more money, instead of thinking “how can I make this movie better because I want to show off my skills as an artist, as a filmmaker”
So, nothing for Canada again? Cause, you know, it’s not like we watch movies up here or anything.
Bitter?
Netflix is moving in the right direction, becoming more of a streaming/cable channel.
First Summit, now Showtime’s losing more movies from slected TWC films. Les Moonves needs to wake up and realize that shows aren’t the end all be all of Showtime.
Smart move, Netflix.
Sally, I’ll be thinking of you when The Artist wins another two or three awards on Sunday.
Showtime doesn’t need movies, this isn’t the 80′s anymore. That’s the old school model of creating a premium cable channel. TWC is smart and forward thinking, it’s only a matter of time before all movies will go straight to streaming after their theatrical release. Smart move Netflix, they should be setting up deals like this directly with all the studios.
It’ll be interesting to see where the Starz numbers line up after they leave Netflix. They’ll probably wish they still had that fat check coming in. Don’t think Dish will be adding many subscribers just because of Starz, but, if Netflix keeps adding these kinds of deals, they will. It’s really time that these streaming/DVD services get it together. All the public wants is good service and good product. That’s it…Oh, and no more 65% fee hikes!
The Artist sucks a nut. Netflix will again lose subscribers.
