TiVo: Jennifer Lopez Starred In Oscar Night’s Most-Viewed TV Moment
Nikki Finke: Live-Snarking The Oscars
UPDATE 11:30 AM: The 84th Annual Academy Awards drew 39.3 million viewers in Live+Same Day. That is up 4% from last year’s viewership and the second-most-watched Oscar ceremony in the past five years, behind the 2010 show where The Hurt Locker defeated blockbuster Avatar. Among adults 18-49, last night’s Oscar telecast (11.7 rating) was even with last year, an impressive feat given that that this year’s host Billy Crystal is almost 64, while last year’s show was hosted by twenty- and thirtysomethings James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Here is historical data for the Academy Awards’ audiences over the past decade, along with the Best Picture winner that year.
2012 39.3 million The Artist
2011 37.9 million The King’s Speech
2010 41.3 million The Hurt Locker
2009 36.3 million Slumdog Millionaire
2008 32.0 million No Country For Old Men
2007 40. 2 million The Departed
2006 38.9 million Crash
2005 42.1 million Million Dollar Baby
2004 43.5 million Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King
2003 33.0 million Chicago
2002 41.8 million A Beautiful Mind
2001 42.9 million Gladiator
PREVIOUS 7:50 AM: Despite mostly negative reviews and no popular blockbusters among the movies vying for the top prizes, last night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards drew a 25.5 household rating/38 share from 8:30-11:24 PM, up 4% from last year (24.5/37). This year’s show was also up from 2009 and 2008 while down from 2010 and 2007 (see historical data below). Among adults 18-49, the Oscars delivered a 14.3 rating in Nielsen’s Local People Meter markets, on par with last year’s 14.4 despite having a host host, Billy Crystal, whose age was the ages of last year’s co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway combined.
2012 25.5/37
2011 24.6/37
2010 26.5/40
2009 23.3/35
2008 21.9/33

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I liked the show. Even though only one of my favorites (Octivia) won. Billy was good. Cirque du Soleil’ was great. Ben Stiller and the red headed actress were funny. Much better than last year.
Bring back Billy with a younger co host. So he can teach them how it is done.
Between the embarrassments of Crystal and Hathaway/Franco, at least I can gladly look at the latter for at least 5 minutes. Oh yes. Ageism.
They dumb down movies to appeal to a bunch of teens who think Channing Tatum has emotional depth. But their big award show appeals to the elderly who won’t be seeing a majority of these films until they appear on THiS TV. It’s as if they need an Oscars that features films that people actually watched and not just critics juiced by Harvey raved about.
Razzies are going to the be the hot ticket – Adam Sandler Vs. Nick Swardson.
Hey now Frank, don’t dis THIS TV! They’re running Roman Coppola’s CQ this month, I never saw it in its original run. Plus great prints of old c-movies like I Saw What You Did, And I Know Who You Are and Johnny Cool. And I’m not “elderly!” Awesome.
I guess Nikki’s snarks about how 50% of America turned off the Oscars were off mark. TOLDJA!
Anyway that we can actually hear Billy’s song of the nominees in clear sound or was it recorded like that as well? I couldn’t hear most of what he was saying and a lot of people were saying the same thing.
Wow, according to your deadline poll — 60 percent didn’t think the artist deserved to win best picture — finally someone is making sense…..
SHOW WAS GREAT. I’m watching it again tonight. Billy should be the permanent host. Period. Great work Mr. Crystal!
Billy Crystal sucked, the broadcast sucked. Period. A lot of people worked really hard to make a horrible show.
Sadly, because the numbers are, they’ll think they did it right.
The academy is a dinosaur colony on the brink of extinction.
Gee, what is gonna make you people happy? What? What?!!!!
On a positive note…
Billy Crystal’s parody of the nominated films was very clever and fun to see. Especially if you have seen the nominated films. My two favorite films did very well, HUGO and THE ARTIST. The Cirque Du Soleil act was far better than those musical numbers that they used to have. Also very thrilling having those trapeze artists performing over the heads of the audience without nets. With a few exceptions the acceptance speeches were good. All in all a good show.
the show was great. it will never make everyone happy. the format is a fossil. considering that, i think everyone who participated did a great job, including all of those behind the scenes.
Given the short amount of time that was given to Brian Grazer, I thought he pulled it together well for having only three months to get it ready…..last year was a disaster, this year the ratings improved because they had a classy , mature host who can do jokes and keep it tasteful at the same time…..
I think Brian Grazer and Billy Crystal did the show well considering the time constraint that they had to prepare….
I think Brian Grazer should continue to produce the Oscars and Billy Crystal should stay on as Oscar permanent host, he belongs there…..
I was happy too see the Artist won for the best film and Meryl Streep won for best actress…..it proves that the Oscars is still holding their standards high and hopefully will keep them there….
The line up of Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep at the end….is exactly how actresses should be…..beautiful, elegant, TALENTED, edgy, classy, sexy, strong, have intellect, and a back bone! This line up last night was good….all three are truly talented and beautiful and all Oscar caliber! This is what all actresses should be like! So the industry doesn’t get a bad name for having dingbats who can’t act or too ugly to sell tickets!
I hope the Oscars will continue to keep the integrity of the industry to its highest standards and nothing less than that!:)
Thank you to all those who showed their support for me last night! God bless!
Sure missed the song and dance numbers for best songs. Seriously could the academy only find 2 original songs worth an award in all the films that were made last year? The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn and several wonderful original songs written for that movie including one written and sung by Bruno Mars and one by Christina Perri among others.
The Oscars need some new writers because the so-called repartee’ was sadly lacking in wit, and cleverness.
I thought Bill Crystal was great. I want him back next year.
Excuse me but what are the people posting on these threads an expert on exactly? Billy Crystal did a terrific job considering he is not a star who has had a movie in the last five years or more, considering his age, considering that coming to save the Oscars at the last moment seems to be his lifetime job – that’s exactly how he got his first time hosting. Let’s put the focus back on the haters and have them say who exactly they would choose to host. Because this is a show that chews off everybody’s heads, from Ellen, to Martin-Baldwin, to Letterman, Whoopy, Chris Rock – even Carson was considered to have tanked back in the day. So please, quit this thread and get a life.
