UPDATE: Reached for comment by Dateline, Criminal Minds star Thomas Gibson gave us the following statement, “We all love Paget and her character and will miss her greatly but I know that she will have continued great success.”
EXCLUSIVE: Emily Prentiss is turning in her badge. Criminal Minds co-star Paget Brewster will leave the hit CBS drama series at the end of this season. Brewster had been itching to do something else for awhile. Last year, she used a provision in her modified deal for Criminal Minds that allowed her to shoot a pilot and did NBC’s comedy My Life as an Experiment. Had the pilot gone to series, Brewster would’ve left the CBS drama for it but when it didn’t, Criminal Minds producer ABC Studios had an option to bring her back and exercised it. I hear that Brewster, whose contract is up in May, wanted to do a half-hour pilot again this year but didn’t get the blessing of CBS and ABC Studios who tried to keep her on the show with an offer for a new deal. (While not officially renewed, Criminal Minds, a strong ratings performer, is guaranteed to return next season.) Brewster opted to leave. “After six wonderful years playing Emily Prentiss, I have decided it’s time for me to move on,” she said in a statement to Deadline. “As much as I will miss my Criminal Minds family, I am excited about the future and other opportunities.” Brewster notified the producers and the cast of Criminal Minds of her decision yesterday. “We were all sad to hear the news, but we respect and support any decision Paget wants to make,” the series’ executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer told Deadline. “Personally, I’m a huge fan and will continue to be one wherever she goes.” Before Criminal Minds, which Brewster joined early in the second season, she did a slew of comedy series, starting with her memorable arc on Friends.
Brewster’s departure caps a roller-coaster last 2 years for her on the show. In the summer of 2010, she was asked to continue on Criminal Minds in a reduced capacity while her friend and co-star A.J. Cook was let go. Brewster ended up being in every episode until she left to do a pilot last season, and Cook eventually returned to the show full-time. Because of the uncertainty surrounding her NBC pilot at the time Brewster’s last episode on Criminal Minds‘ sixth season was filmed, Brewster shot a cliff-hanger ending for her character. When the pilot didn’t get picked up, she was enlisted for the current sevenths season of Criminal Minds, something Brewster recently told TV Guide she was surprised by. “They said, ‘You’re back!’ I had another year on my contract that I didn’t know about, so I had to come back! I said, ‘Hey, I kinda want an apology and maybe a raise.’ And they were like, ‘No, we’ll sue you!’” Brewster said with a laugh. “The whole thing was, unfortunately, a mess. It was dumb. They thought they would save money by getting rid of us … and in the end got both of us back.” While Brewster is leaving, most oher Criminal Minds co-stars, including Thomas Gibson, Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore and Cook, have deals in place for next season. Matthew Gray Gubler is in the process of renegotiating his.

I really, really hope Matthew’s contract gets renewed. I really can’t imagine the show without him. CM wouldn’t be CM without the genius Dr. Reid.
Paget is AMAZING! I love her!! She is great on CM and will be great on another show. Good for her.
Will miss you….but good luck for the future
Now beg Rachel Nichols for forgiveness AND bring her back to the show!
Good on her. I can’t wait to see her go back to comedy. Have loved her since Friends.
While it will be a change we must again get used to, I hope that the producers of Criminal Minds will represent another woman and one of color! I feel that this show is getting watered down and when that happens, it loses viewers and when it loses viewers it gets cancelled! Who they can get rid of is that Penelope character and those of us who get irritated by her total lack of professionalism will be jumping up and down for joy! Her is a woman with a special skill and a very much needed skill and she behaves like a suppressed adolescence! She does not do much for the cause of the educated woman!
That’s where you’re wrong! Don’t start pointing fingers at other characters just because Paget is leaving! Penelope Garcia may not be very professional, but she is an amazing woman, and Kristen Vangsness is one of the most perfect and beautiful people in this world!
I’m sorry that you feel that way, but Paget chose to leave the show at the end of this season. Last time, she was forced out and was dragged back because of a clause in her contract. If she wants to leave, that’s fine. She’s an amazing actress and will probably get work just about anywhere. If you want to blame someone, blame CBS and how their stupid decisions brought them to this moment, but don’t be hating on beautiful characters because of how they act! If you’re going to do that, then GET OUT!
I hope they don’t bring back Rachel. Nothing against her, but she looked so much like J.J. that it was hard to tell them apart. They need someone really different and unique looking.
If Matthew Gray Gubler doesnt come back I will cry just like how sad it is that she’s not going to be doing it anymore
Oh well, here’s wishing the best of luck for Paget!
And while I’m here…. Howzabout we bring back Elle (Lola Gaudini)? I always liked her and they didn’t kill her off, so….
Jim
Isn’t she in Dan Vs. too?
OTOH, I wish Paget the best.
I am sad that she is leaving..we just got her back! I am sad and now she’s gonna leave twice and we have be sad again lol. I wish her success in the future.I have one HUGE request pleaaaaassse don’t bring back Seaver! It would be stupid and lazy on the writers part…let them carry on with just the rest of the cast and if you replace her find another character. Not too many people liked Seaver and lots of fans will be sad to see perentiss
Sorry comment cut off lol anyways it would only make things worse by brining back a not so popular character and most fans will be pissed even more.nothing against the actress but CBS didn’t treat her that we’ll either….plus they were trying to hook Reid and her up
criminal minds/days of our lives! Noooo
Totally happy for Ms Brewster. The way she (and ALL the actors) were treated by CM last year justifies her leaving. She was forced back on CM this year when her NBC pilot failed–and after the CM producers had “let her go” the previous season in a God-awful botched series of casting changes. The producers had been able to avoid responsibility for their own inept actions by hanging responsibility for fan displeasure around the neck of actress Rachel Nichols. Which was unjustified. Now, thru her actions, Ms. Brewster is showing her dissatisfaction with the show’s executives.
goodbye paget. i wish you great success in other places
will miss you on CM though!
It’s shameful the way they’ve treated and continue to treat Paget. I’m glad she’s leaving to pursue what she wants to do. The comedy world awaits her return.
i love watching paget kick down them doors. she will be good in whatever she does. but they need to make signing matthew their first priority
I’m absolutely happy for Paget that she’s leaving the show on her own terms rather than as a result of the Eye’s Completely Bullshit Sexism from the summer of 2010.
Hopefully, they’ll bring Rachel Nichols back as Seaver. The ire that certain segments of Minds’ fandom has toward her is IMO patently unfair scapegoating over CBS’s misdeeds. I know that the complaint goes that since Hotch’s team is the elite squad within the BAU that that should disqualify a rookie picked straight out of the academy before graduation. But that misses the point. While Seaver isn’t a nearly-Aspergery wunderkind polymath like Reid, she nevertheless aced through the Academy with a drive and intensity that prompted Rossi, one of the department’s most senior agents, to pull her up onto the squad as an intern/probie. Her tragic background contrasts nicely with J.J.’s relatively normal personal history, which, combined with Nichols and Cook’s similarity in looks, gives Seaver the potential for a little sister/big sister type of relationship with J.J., who the show is already starting to develop into a more Prentiss-y take-charge agent role. Not to mention Rossi’s role as a surrogate father to Seaver. And mind you, the “Round Table”/surrogate family aspect of the team has been front and center as text since the show began.
(PS: IMO, GI Joe 2 is gonna flop *because* she’s not reprising her role as central team member and lead female character Scarlett in it.)
With very few pilots getting picked up as networks look towards adding more reality tv to their lineups, actors shouldn’t be in such a hurry to give up the steady paycheck that a tv series provides. While I wish Paget all the best, she needs to realize that actors rarely get a second chance at starting in a hit tv show.
CBS renew Matthew Gray Gubler’s contract already. PLEASE don’t stretch it out like Thomas’ contract. Reid is so essential to the show.
Paget
It was such a great experience working with you. I know the fans will miss you but not nearly as much as the crew and writers. You lifted scenes and moments that were not even on the page and raised the bar every time you graced the set.
I know I have said this to you many times but it’s rare to see actors who love the craft as much as you. In South London slang, YOU ARE THE DOGS BOLLOCKS!! Look it up in wiki for translation.
Your mate
Simon Mirren
I
Matthew’s contract is up this year
Joe’s contract is through next year as he joined two years late
Kirsten is up later on as she renegotiated for the spin off
it is not the current producers who did anything to AJ and Paget. It is the current producer who lobbied to get them back.
Its sad that Paget is leaving but all actors move on and have success elsewhere. No one can replace her but all shows go on and find other ways to make up the loss.
Ms Brewster,
You will be greatly missed. I don’t know of another ensemble cast that has been so well put together. I wish you well and pray that whatever your desires are, that they will be just as successful as your run on Criminal Minds if not more so. God Bless.
P.S Someone is going to have some very big shoes to fill!
So sad to see her leave, but if it’s her choice then I can’t be too upset. Hoping the show will continue to go strong.
I wish Padget all the best and will miss Emily. Glad to here Joe, Tom and AJ are signed up hope Matthew and Kirsten do the same. It would be very different with our Garcie.
I was one of those people who even called CBS to get her back, but I really understand that after the way she was treated, she should go and try something new, far away from this thankless and sexist network.
I’m sad to see her go, but I have to say, her character has been so underused this season, even with the coming back from the dead storyline.
I can’t wait to have her back in comedy, because that’s where she belongs, even though Prentiss is a great character.
And I really, really hope the show stays with just the 6, no new character needed, JJ is already a new profiler and Garcia got her job, so there’s no need for 6 profilers. Plus, maybe with 6, they can spread out the time of the episode more evenly.
Best of luck, will follow her work wherever she goes.
