Ben Gazzara, veteran actor of stage, movies and television, died of pancreatic cancer at Bellevue Hospital Center, his attorney Jay Julien told the New York Times. He was 81. The New York native studied at the Actors Studio and starred in numerous Broadway productions including Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof directed by Elia Kazan, though for the film version he lost out to Paul Newman. In movies, he made a strong impression as the accused killer in Otto Preminger’s 1959 courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Murder. Of his extensive TV work, he’s perhaps best remembered for NBC’s 1965-68 Run For Your Life, in which he played a terminally ill man trying to squeeze the most out of his remaining time alive. He continued to work with acclaimed film directors. His initial collaboration with John Cassavetes was on Husbands, which also starred Cassavetes and Peter Falk. Other films included the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski, Spike Lee’s Summer Of Sam, David Mamet’s The Spanish Prisoner, Todd Solondz’s Happiness, John Turturro’s Illuminata and John McTiernan’s 1999 version of The Thomas Crown Affair. Gazzara is survived by his third wife, the former Elke Stuckmann, and their daughters.

Brad Wesley from ROADHOUSE. R.I.P.
Great one but Harry in Husbands is it for me.
A truly wonderful actor who had an incredible intensity on screen. I first remember seeing him in the lead in CONVICTS FOUR, a 1960s prison drama that still sizzles. He played a prisoner who developed his skills as an artist to become the artistic equivalent of the birdman of Alcatraz. He will be missed.
Just an amazing talent…wake up everyone. we nominate Brad Pitt for an oscar who’s definitely in need of some talent???..(shouldn’t even be in the category) and never acknowledge Mr Gazzara…??? Could we get these 15 yr olds running our industry a job at Mc Donalds? Sorry…unfortunately they’d need to know the difference between mustard and ketchup…That’s really difficult.
He was also extraordinary as a blindman in Dogville… Ben Gazzara was an extraordinary actor and I am extremely sad to hear that he died today. RIP Ben!
so good in Bogdonavich’s SAINT JACK
We’re losing all the giants
Sensational actor and kind person. He will be missed.
RIP. Awesome in ‘The Killing of a Chinese Bookie’
You forgot to mention THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE by Cassavetes, a tour de force for Gazzara.
Worked on “Roadhouse” and had lots of dealings with BG and found him to be a great delight and extremely professional. And that voice was so distinctive. A couple years later I was in Boston at a North End Italian eatery and from another room in the restaurant I heard this voice and finally peaked around the corner to see Ben holding court with a group of fellas (Louie the Wrench, Jimmy Knuckles, e.g.) that looked like a scene from “Goodfellas.”
He was wonderful in Happiness. I saw it when it came out – what, 10 years ago? – and I still remember falling about with laughter when he piled salt on his meal at the end. Great comic timing. He will be missed.
A remarkable “George” to Colleen Dewhurst’s perfect “Martha” in, to my mind, the definitive production directed by Mr. Albee. Brilliant. R.I.P. Mr. Gazzara.
Death of a Chinese Bookie, Husbands… God I loved this guy. Thanks for the integrity and dedication to your art. You will live forever.
Very sad! Mr. Gazzara was asking a question to my husband at the airport in Acapulco, many years ago. Good actor!
Thanks for from GOOGLE page 1 after seeing this in hotmail banner #1c of 7 just now this evening. Of my comment to my facebook page of: “R.I.P. “Paul Bryant” of “Run For Your Life”, seen on RTV weekends of just a couple of years ago, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, remembering that episode where Kim Darby did guess at your illness, of a sadness now of for real. You will be missed. I also liked that saying by you at the airport to that dictator you tricked to back into the states to pay for his crimes, of in some foreign language, but the bottom line being of for the truth and justice.”
That episode with Kim Darby is one of the best episodes of the series – definitly the best episode of the first season! (and to think , she did that episode only a couple months after her STAR TREK appearance!)
RIP…i loved your 1998 – Happiness, Lebowski and Buffalo ’66. What a year, in a great career!
Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a Murder will be out this month on Criterion Blu-ray. Anyone who dosen’t remember who he was…well, take a look.
A fine actor with a vastly underrated body of work. Even if the project was a stinker, he was worth watching.
Rest peacefully, Ben.
Addio paesano.
Rip to an outstanding actor.
Jackie Treehorn was one of my favorite characters in the Big Lebowski.
The first time I noticed him was in QB VII. Brilliant actor!
I don’t know about the rest of you but I would be willing to sign up for 81 years. Sounds like he had a full and interesting life. R.I.P Ben.
A dear friend and neighbor. Much love Ben.
Great actor; what a body of work with Cassavetes … and, Falk. Husbands was incredible. Always remmeber seeing him at Gino’s in New York (now, gone too) … a class act all the way!
good bye Ben Gazzara
