The director of the erotically charged films Two Moon Junction, Wild Orchid and Red Shoe Diaries and producer/co-writer of Adrian Lyne’s cult hit 9½ Weeks died today at his home in Santa Monica after a long battle with cancer, a family member confirmed to Deadline. He was 70. King, dubbed “the high priest of erotic filmmaking,” has dozens of film and TV producer, director and writer credits and often collaborated with his wife, writer-producer Patricia Louisianna Knop. They co-penned 9½ Weeks, the 1986 film that starred Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger as a pair of strangers who begin a relationship based solely on sex and was notably hot and heavy for its time. The MGM title grossed $6.7 million. King and his wife also co-wrote 1989′s Wild Orchid, starring Rourke and Jacquline Bisset, as well as many episodes of Red Shoe Diaries, the Showtime series that spawned a 1992 TV movie and numerous direct-to-video titles.

A very kind soul. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
I think for people of a certain age he was kind of an icon being a really artistic, smart and extremely attractive guy. First as an actor and then with his body of produced work, he seemed to be uniquely and genuinely ‘cool’. I hope he had a good life.
RIP Zalman amen
Zal was an incredible man. A generous, kind, humble soul who touched the lives of everyone he worked with. You can’t imagine the loss.
God bless this man. Lord knows my childhood would have been spent watching scrambled Spice channel without his contributions to society.
Zalman was the rare exception in Hollywood; a maverick visionary who refused to bow to the least common denominator — and did not suffer fools — yet also a soulful creative who selflessly offered his insight, his time, his relationships and even opportunities to work with him on the highest levels, because he believed in the quality of your character as much as he believed in your talent. Thoughts and prayers to his wife and daughters and son in law and grandchildren. The man truly broke the mold. I’m blessed to have known him.
Let’s not forget that he was also in the awesome Galaxy of Terror.
+1 on his portrayal of Baelon in Galaxy of Terror. Tough, pissed off, and with a limp!
Alwys will remember him from the second Harry O pilot, “Smile Jenny, You’re Dead”. Good actor alng with his other career highlights. RIP.
Maybe the only legit filmmaker to ever be put out of business by the ubiquity of hardcore porn.
When I worked with Zalman on the Big Island he ate the same tuna sandwich every day, got into epic creative battles on a daily (hourly?) basis with just about everyone, and would do everything in his power to keep the cut from ever getting delivered in a timely manner. But boy, did we have fun while it lasted. Nice guy. Great smile. So long, mate.
Fell in love/lust with his work after seeing 9 1/2 Weeks and it endured through all of The Red Shoe Diaries and Two Moon Junction. Erotic filmmaking will never be as good. RIP Mr. King.
I worked with Zalman on the only non-naked babe movie he ever did (“In God’s Hands”) He was as intense as you might have imagined and I loved him for it. So long old pal.
I would always look forward to meetings with Zalman and Pat…always entertaining, engaging and enlightening….dinners were even better…you will be missed RIP
A true Molder of Men but for those who got to really know him the really big turn on came when ya found out he was the warnest family man you’d ever met. The party up there must be just beginning Pal but how wonderful knowing you went scouting first to let us know what a gas it was gonna be….
Eternal thanks from a child of the ‘80s whose choices where those of idealized romance (Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink) stylized crime (Manhunter, Miami Vice) or just simple gore (Faces of Death) and whores (pick any porn). He gave us a taste of erotica, that sex and our sexuality could be something more than rutting around in the backseat of a car after prom.
RIP Sir, and thank you for helping us (me and all the other girls) figure out that “good girls” like good sex too. (Even if it involves a lil kink.)
Today is my birthday and I was stunned to hear about Zalman’s passing. Chloe, Zalman’s daughter, has been a friend of mine for years – and so much on my mind the last few days, (it had been too long since I’ve seen her.) Years ago, Chloe talked Zalman into letting me write and direct an episode of Red Shoe Diaries. Zalman agreed! He so loved and admired writing, loved and admired his wife and daughters and grandchildren…he so loved women – and he was one of the only men in Hollywood to ever give me a chance! All he suggested was “Mexican Wrestling”…and let me run with it. Zalman was a like little boy with toys, he loved gadgets, cameras, beauty. And his laugh! Merry with a big dash of irony. Oh, Zalman, I am so sad. And Chloe… Pat, Gillian…my heart is with you. Lizzie
Dear Red Shoes,,,
One of a kind writer/director, whos stories not only tittilated you, but intrigued you. The old cliche “Porn with a plot” sure applied to him here, as his stories are still applicable and viewable today BECAUSE of that! R.I.P Big Z!
What I remember most fondly about Zalman King was not his directing career or his body of work – it was how much he loved his family. He was one of the most devoted, loving fathers I have ever known. RIP
he was the star in The Young Lawyers tv series together with the great Lee J Cobb. Terrific and underrated show. The show made him into a star but he didn’t like being a celebrity, Quit acting and moved into production
I worked with Pat in the 80′s….Pat and Zalman’s marriage was an inspiration…they were friends, lovers, and true partners. They shared an artistic sensibility that was personified in their amazing home – which I can still picture 30 years later…my heartfelt condolences to Pat, and their children.
I had the great pleasure to work with Zalman developing a mainstream movie a number of years ago. He was an out of the box idea as a filmmaker for the project until you met with him and understood that he had a compelling personal aesthetic that not only drove his interest, but informed on his view of the world. He was a kind and generous man who tapped into a powerful part of the human psyche with 9 1/2 Weeks and the Red Shoe series, but he did so with the elegance of a man who very much loved romance and was simply moderninzing our understanding of the obsession sexuality can have for many. His building in the valley was state of the art and fully realized as an ultra, mini studio. I feel fortunate to have spent time with him and hope he is safe and secure wherever he has gone. RIP.
Zalman was the most passionate director I have ever worked with. I will miss him. My love to Pat and the family.
I remember him from a tv show in the 70′s as an actor. It was about a group of young people stranded on an island after a plane crash. It was very short lived, but I enjoyed it while it was on. Anyone else remember this? I am so sorry for his family and friends.
