In its first official comment since stories began appearing about a racy one-sheet featuring The Artist star Jean Dujardin holding a woman by the ankles to promote the comedy Les Infideles, Wild Bunch confirms it has removed the posters and said the billboard posting agency hired by distributor Mars Films dropped the ball by not getting approvals from ARPP, the regulation council. The Wild Bunch veep of international distribution in charge of Les Infideles, Carole Baraton, said that the movie has been well reviewed and described the film as “charged with fierce humor against male unfaithfulness.”

It’s certainly bad timing those unapproved posters were hung during the Oscar balloting period, and yeah, some of the images are pretty tacky. But press reports inferring this could hurt Dujardin’s chances for a Best Actor Oscar (he won the SAG Award) seem preposterous. The poster was meant to be a spoof of the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, and it is reminiscent of spoofs like the Naked Gun films. Dujardin made the film with his wife, Alexandra Lamy, and made his name in France doing spoof comedies like the OSS 117 films. Trying to turn this into a scandal seems a real stretch.

We must be desperate for controversy this year!
What about parental unfaithfulness from the crib?
“…charged with fierce humor against male unfaithfulness.”
Tacky.
“It’s certainly bad timing those unapproved posters were hung during the Oscar balloting period, and yeah, some of the images are pretty tacky.”
Are you kidding me? This is total media BS. They must be bored at Variety to even bring this up. Move on.
If you can’t tell the difference between the French artwork from the Naked Gun ones, you’re an idiot. The French ones, this one as well as the others from that film, are truly ugly and offensive to women. Even French women are protesting the grossness of the posters, so don’t pretend it’s American prudishness or anything to do with the Oscars. Get a clue.
Yet another utterly dull, humorless, PC moron. Did you ever stop to think of the context of the imagery? It’s deliberately overtly “sexist” to highlight the idiotic nature of the men, which is the point of the film. Try to grasp the nuance of context and get over your own self important notion of what’s right and wrong for society and trust that people can decide for themselves if they like something or not. If these posters are truly offensive then women – and many men – won’t go see the film. Simple. Or would you like the studio to be charged with criminal offenses?!
Agreed, this is much ado about nothing. Sad that some in the media would feel the need to try and create an issue where none exists.
Condor you are desperate and pathetic
Complete bullshit. Dujardin gave my favorite performance of the nominees. He deserves to win.
Dujardin will probably be the worst actor ever to win an academy if it happens.
he is a very good actor.
What are you basing your statement on?
Don’t know who “b” was addressing, but I’m impressed with the range Jean Dujardin has shown… I’ve seen “Brice De Nice”, watched many eps of the French “Un Gars et une Fille” on YouTube and have the OSS films (or one of them) in my Netflix queue. It took me longer than it should have to connect the Jean Dujardin in the “The Artist” with these broader comic efforts.
I think he deserves the Oscar. YMMV.
Dujardin stunk in The Artist and this poster shows he’s a hack at picking horrible projects. It’s wildly offensive and exploitive. And I’m a dude.
Excuse me. He didn’t “choose” this, he co-wrote it with Gilles Lellouche and Emmanuelle Bercot. And considering the movie is a series of short films about infidelity and clueless, sexist men, I’m a little surprised that the French had so much trouble with the posters. Judging by the trailer, they fit the film very well.
All the same, this is a tempest in a teapot and shouldn’t get in the way of M. Dujardin’s Oscar hopes. (And, yes, I want him to win.)
If Melissa Leo still won after the hoopla over her photos last year, I don’t see how this will hurt Dujardin.
offensive or not, the posters look stupid. You have to leave a little something for the imagination.
