In its winter finale, Fox’s Glee (2.9/8) recouped some of the 15% ratings drop last week with an 4% uptick. New Girl (3.0/8) was down a tenth, while Raising Hope (2.2/5) was up 5%. ABC’s Last Man Standing proves to be just that in the network’s Tuesday lineup. The freshman comedy (2.2/6) was flat with last week and the highest-rated ABC program on the night by a mile. Cougar Town (1.7/4) shed 6% from its low-rated premiere on Valentine’s Day last week. New drama The River (1.7/4) appears to have found a (low) bottom, even with last Tuesday. Body Of Proof (1.4/4) bucked the trend, up 17% from last week’s series low. CBS (2.9/8, 15.3 million) topped the night in both 18-49 and total viewers, but all of its series were down week-to-week. NCIS (3.8/10) was down 3%, NCIS: LA (2.9/7) down 9% to a season low and Unforgettable (1.9/5) down 17% to a series low. Meanwhile, NBC’s shows posted gains. The Biggest Loser (2.3/6) was up 10% from last week’s season low and Parenthood (1.7/5) was up 6%. The CW’s Ringer (0.5/1) was up a tenth after a steep 40% decline last week.

Bummed to hear about COUGARTOWN slipping. Lawrence’s grassroots push is so heartfelt and refreshing, really makes me hope it picks up.
It’s completely incompatible with Last Man Standing so it really never stood a chance in that time slot.
“Sometimes when a series stumbles, it’s hard to know whether it’s the *show* or the *flow*…”
“…You keep telling viewers that they needn’t bother to watch a show, they eventually take the hint.”
- USA Today
Cougartown’s audience is dwindling that’s a fact but placing it after Last Man Standing? There was no way these two shows would work together. LMS is a FAMILY show about a FAMILY and only occasionally goes off-color with it’s humor. The audience that responds to that kind of show isn’t the least bit interested in Cougartown. LMS has proven it’s worth on Tuesday night despite every adversity of scheduling. If ABC wants to make something of it they need to build and HOUR of family-style comedy and STOP continuing to pair it up with cynical-lowbrow, quasi hipster shows.
…counting the days until the return of back-to-back episodes of LMS to fill the hour.
I know I do go on about this…but for the love of god, Dylan Walsh deserves better than that crap. Get this man a real show please.
Hmmm…i wonder what sort of character the powers that be have in mind for him…
I love Cougar Town but I have to admit that I haven’t watched it since it’s been back. It was off the air for so long that I found new shows to watch. Absence doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder, especially when it relates to broadcast TV shows.
It’s hard to draw a bead sometimes as to whether these sorts of absences are a calculated effort to validate and hopefully stoke interest or are a result of some issues with the show that the networks are keeping to themselves.
I like Cougar Town but don’t want to get too caught up in it if the network brass is content to let it whither on the vine because they are convinced it doesn’t have a future.
Suspect the same is true for Glee and New Girl – the football hiatus, Xfactor breaks and now a long hiatus for the former will not help right things.
Ringer was up a tenth?-Seriously? I very much doubt rising a tenth will help its’ chances at a renewal-but-then again, this is the CW and they consider EVERY SHOW a “hit”-so Ringer may be safe after all. I am actually a fan of it-but-my interest is quickly waning. This program was more interesting before the hiatus-but-since it has returned I can hardly keep track of which one is which -and I’m starting not to care anymore. If it gets a renewal-I think they will very quickly run out of ideas and plot devices-IMHO. Also,I see the hiatus nonsense with the networks continues,as, Glee won’t be back until April. These programs dissappear for a month or two,&, these networks then have the nerve to wonder why ratings are down when they decide to come back…
That’s an interesting comment about the disappearing programs, and the damage those long in-season hiatuses do the program. Anecdotally, of the few shows I watch that really qualify as “appointment TV”, they’re all limited-run series that broadcast largely without interruption, from week-to-week, during the run.
Maybe that model, for a variety of reasons, just won’t work with the current and traditional, broadcast TV model. But, it’s seems the outlook for that model isn’t very bright. Maybe it’s time to look at something different.
“Maybe that model, for a variety of reasons, just won’t work with the current and traditional, broadcast TV model.”
Shoot, the money the nets are losing on SMASH, TERRA NOVA, and THE RIVER alone is reason enough to try limited-run. Why is it taking them and the studios so long to get a clue in this department? Would limited-run really cost them that much more and be more risky than having expensive show after expensive show crash-and-burn because their premises just won’t stretch for 22+ eps?
And sometimes a plucky and charming little show like Brian comes along.
Like I stated beforehand, that’s what seriously hurt Pan Am on ABC…those stupid long hiatuses and lack of promotion from the network which is going to cause its doom to happen real soon. Can’t see the show coming back unless MAJOR changes are made on all fronts.
And had I not been watching Justified last night, I might care about any of this.
Just a thought:Perhaps it was named “The River” because of the flow of bad ideas thrown into it.
I watch Last Man Standing and Cougar Town but Cougar Town’s single cam type of humor doesn’t mesh well Last Man Standing. Cougar Town should be with like comedies; Modern Family, and The Middle. ABC’s problem is they don’t have a 8:30 comedy that will fit the bill on Tuesdays. Happy Endings would get even worse ratings if it were behind Last Man Standing. ABC could really use a “Better With You” right now, if they had one- MORONS.
Cougar Town just doesn’t fit well with Allen’s show but where else can they move Cougar Town as most of their timeslots are full at the moment and this was the only slot available. ABC has their work cut out for them as The River needs to be sent Up the River with those dismal ratings. NBC needs to focus more on scripted shows and the CW is well…the CW. They’ll always be rock bottom.
Cougartown should have been canceled after 3 episodes into the first season. Bill Lawrence’ “guerrilla marketing” ploy failed miserably and it just goes to show that the “celebrity system” is on it’s way our. People are caring less and less about these egomaniacs and their ridiculous TV shows. Thanks Steve Jobs (RIP) and Mark Zuckerberg!
“COUGAR TOWN” should not be paired with “LAST MAN STANDING”.
ABC needs to move “THE MIDDLE” to Tuesdays at 8:30pm after “LAST MAN STANDING” and put “COUGAR TOWN” back on Wednesdays where it belongs.
Wednesday: “SUBURGATORY” at 8pm, “COUGAR TOWN” at 8:30pm, “MODERN FAMILY” at 9pm, “HAPPY ENDINGS” at 9:30pm.
