The down trend this week continued with another night of steep declines. The entire ABC lineup was down from last week to tie or post new season lows (except Thanksgiving eve): The Middle (2.5/7, off 4%), Suburgatory (2.4/6, down 8%), Modern Family (4.7/12, down 15%), Happy Endings (2.5/6, down 14%) and Revenge (2.4/6), which was off 4% for one of its most pivotal episodes to date.
CBS’ Survivor (3.0/8) started its new season on the low side, down two tenths from last year’s February premiere, though it may trim the gap to one tenth in the finals. Criminal Minds (3.0/7) was down 9% from last week for a season low, while CSI (2.7/7) perked up, increasing 8% from last week to win the 10 PM hour. Is new star Elisabeth Shue behind the gains?
Fox’s two-hour American Idol (6.0/16) matched its fast national result last Wednesday for an hourlong epsiode and is expected to also be even with last week in the finals, at a 6.1 rating.
NBC barely registered, with Law & Order: SVU as the highest-rated program of the night at a paltry 1.7/4, down 15% from last week for a series low. It was hurt by its (non) lead-in, Rock Center With Brian Williams (0.8/2), which was down 27% from last week and is projected to be topped in the ratings by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly for the second time. Believe it or not, this is not a series low for the low-rated NBC newsmagazine; it hit a 0.7 rating in the old Monday 10 PM slot last month. NBC’s Wednesday comedies Whitney and Are Your There, Chelsea, which had been delivering matching results since they launched together last month, separated from each other, with Whitney (1.6/5) going up a tenth from last week, and Chelsea (1.4/4) sliding by that much. The CW’s One Tree Hill (0.7/2) held steady, while dismally rated reality series Remodeled (0.2/1) dropped a tenth for a new series low.

Whitney needs to be canceled already. I’d imagine re-runs of other shows would do much better for WNNNNNNNNBC.
What other shows?!! They can’t plug The Voice and Grimm everywhere!
So slightly more people suffered through Whitney this week? My, what a masochistic country we live in! I guess by the time Chelsea aired they had to say “uncle.”
CSI is completely new and energetic with Ted and Elisabeth at the helm. It can go for years as they have amazing chemistry! I love them together!
Seriously, CW’s Remodeled=EPIC FAIL. What the hell made the programmers think ANYONE would wanna watch this!?!? An absolute utter waste of precious network airtime! With Ringer also having dropped to a low rating & so many of its’ shows at low ratings-can we seriously even consider the CW a “network”? Thank you.
i hate suburgatory. cancel it abc and replace it with raising hope.
Do you think that the increase for ‘Whitney’ was due to people tuning in in the mistaken belief that the show was a tribute to the recently deceased singer. I kid, I kid…
laughing right now. well said.
It’s the slow death of “Whitney” vs. sudden death of Whitney. As for Chelsea, how ’bout a mercy killing? Such prefabricated characters doing their overly orchestrated schtick. Are You There, Audience?
Whitney uptick as viewers thought they might be tuning into a Whitney Houston special or memorial. Would not be surprised if you saw declines on a minute x minute report
I have to say that Whitney has grown on me. I really like the show and I hope it sticks around. And since the ratings are higher than every other Comedy NBC has (except the Office, for now anyway ) it should make it a few more seasons as NBC try’s to rebuild it’s schedule. As for Chelsea…..ummm not so much. I am the biggest Chelsea fan out there, and even I can’t stand this show.
I know the CW bases everything only on their (supposed) young female demos, but how in the world can a national network survive when its scripted shows are getting a 0.7/2? Even its “hit” scripted shows don’t do much better. I mean, that’s like, what, a million people? Those are lower tier basic cable-type ratings.
How many people tuned into Whitney thinking it was a special about Whitney Houston?
“Whitney” and “Chelsea” suffer from the same problem: Both the leads are unappealing and lacking in on-screen charisma.
They’re unattractive dirges.
And hearing the one note joke shared by both shows (over and over again): “Yeah, we’re older and we like to drink and fuck” schtick is like being stuck in the corner at a bad party with an ugly drunk.
