UPDATED: Whitney Houston’s shocking death just 24 hours before the music industry’s biggest event, the annual Grammy Awards, sent CBS, the Recording Academy and the show’s producers scrambling to put together a fitting tribute to one of the music industry’s biggest stars. Jennifer Hudson, who like Houston came from gospel roots to enjoy a flourishing career as both a singer and actress, will perform a Houston tribute at the Grammys tomorrow night, the show’s executive producer Ken Erlich just announced. It will no doubt be a memorable moment in Grammy Awards history, just like six-time Grammy winner Houston’s performance of One Moment In Time at the 1989 show. (Watch it below). And a very highly rated Grammy Awards for CBS. Erlich said that they were in the middle of rehearsal for tomorrow’s show when the news of Houston’s death broke. “As you know she was very closely associated with the Grammys both as a performer and as a Grammy winner, and a lot of us who worked on the show worked with her a number of times, so it’s a very sad day for us, and it’s going to be tough to recover from,” he said in an interview for the CBS affiliate stations. Shortly thereafter, Erlich called Hudson, who accepted his invitation to perform. “She’s a good friend of the Grammys,” Erlich said. “She’s had some very significant appearances on the show, it felt right to ask her to come and help us honor Whitney which she will do musically.”

yes let the cashing in begin
Sad, eh?
let the braying of hateful goons like you begin
sad? indeed
Clive Davis, should have cancelled his Pre-Grammy party. Whitney was such a large part of his life, that it would have shown a genuine sensitivity to his guests, and the world. But I guess that gets lost in the entertainment industry bubble. It truly is not a fun night.
He didn’t even attend his own party… I’m sure he couldn’t cancel it that late in the day.
Ashame it was Huston and not Cummings.

….AND the casting… WHITNEY: THE MOVIE . It’ll happen.
Rihanna launching her movie career to star as Whitney… You heard it hear first!
No, Rihanna won’t be playing Whitney. If she does, a lot of people in Dallas won’t be seeing the movie. I’ve said it before, right after the Dreamgirls nomination, that Jennifer Hudson would play Whitney Houston in the movie version of her life after she died way too soon. I’d put money on it coming to pass real soon.
I love Rihanna, but she doesn’t have the range or to be honest the voice. she has a voice, not the voice
Jennifer? Seriously?
While I won’t doubt her talent in a similar style to Whitney, they couldn’t have come up with someone more directly connected to Whitney? Or at least a legend equal to the legend of Whitney?
Agreed!
Aretha… Diana… Or Dolly doing IWALY that she wrote…
All would be far more appropriate!
Diana doesn’t do any tributes except for herself
Hope Charice would be part of the Grammy tribute to Whitney Houston. She can also do justice to any Whitney song – http://youtu.be/BM-Zn-H5Vq8
And now i definitely won’t be watching the horror show tomorrow night after all. The thought of all those tribute speeches by this group of media whores would be more than I could stomach. Let the bullshit spew, people.
I’m the first to give an artiist a pass for having moved me, but as her music never spoke to me, what’s jennifer hudson gonna do…be super mean to people, smoke some crack, abuse herself and her kid and make a crappy reality series to try to fuel a drug addiction? I’ve never been more shocked to see someone disgrace the airwaves so outrageously as she did, and be allowed to continue that type of behaviour just for commerce sake…not that she was so unique in that regard, we’ve seen plenty of singers follow this path, but in the end, the overwhelming sentiment that I’m left with regarding whitney houston, watching her coked out of her mind, with her children on tv, was….that no one loved this woman. Not really. They just watched it happen and pissed and moaned a bit, but cashed in…and now that she’s gone, people will tell u she was loved…but she wasn’t. She was a crack head who didn’t have the love she needed to overcome what was, I can only imagine a horrible horrible addiction.
Rude. And unnecessary.
Wow. I get Hollywood snark, but some of these posts are just crap. . Rude. Tasteless. The woman was one of the best vocalists ever, and if you have a soul you’d know that. Show a little respect.
You don’t know any of what you are talking about. It’s just your hysterical, self-absorbed opinion.
i bad taste for now . you can wait
Hope your post makes you feel better about yourself. Maybe having no class or talent does that to people, but not surprisingly, you’re alone in your sentiment & behavior.
A perfect choice to illustrate just what we’ve lost with Houston’s death- a true talent that no one can hold a candle to, especially a third rate over-singer like Hudson. Well, at least it wasn’t Haguilera.
If Adele isn’t also part of the tribute then Grammy producers will be making huge mistake. Her voice alone moves to tears.
Memo To: Les Moonves
Memo From: CBS Ad Sales
Les we have determined that we can raise our 30 second ad rates for the Grammys by at least 700%. Advertisers will happily pay this new rate. Whitney’s tragic death is very profitable for CBS. Please send me your email authorization for this 700% price hike first thing in the morning so we can notify our sponsors. We don’t anticipate any of them backing out or refusing to pay the new price which will be more expensive than the Super Bowl ad rate.
Make it 750 % and get additional ad buys from every sponsor for all of our follow-up Whitney tributes we can milk her death for at least six months and all those ads will cost 400% more no matter the timeslot we are going to be All Whitney All The Time from the CBS Morning Show to Letterman and everything in between including that daytime ratings hit The Talk hosted by my lovely wife Julie Chen. Keep up the good work.
The 80′s and to a debatable degree, the 90′s have taken a fatal blow. Jackson and now Houston. Prince is the last one standing level on the listing ship. The three of them described and owned the vocal persona of the E.T. era. Madonna is great and is well loved but the three of these R&B soul artists are artists not by choice but by birth. The rest are artists by sheer will power, a different thing entirely.
Prince has clearly proven he has transcended. He has nothing to do with the music industry anymore, for obvious reasons. He might have started in the 80s, but that dude is in the stratosphere – not of this EARTH!
good call posting the 1989 Grammy performance of “One Moment in Time.” What an amazing performance. It’s too easy to talk about Whitney’s days as an addict but it’s good to remember just how good she was during her peak.
A beautiful voice in her youth.
YAWN
Hudson is not the best singer. Hopefully she’ll do Whitney justice and not OVER sing.
Jennifer Hudson performance must be on point tonight. The performance for her will be big, the torch will be handed to her tonight so run Jennifer. Whitney will live on through Hudson.
personally, in terms of the voice, you cant even put madonna, MJ, or prince, on whitney’s level in whiteny’s prime.
maybe michael in the lates 70s/early 80s but Madonna is a dancer/entertainer. Prince rocks(best superbowl music moment eva .) MJ got the dance floor, pop hits, and midlevel ballad, BUT whitney could soar like an eagle. the other 3 have their great moments but theirs is not about larger then life inspirational heavenly voice that whitney had(and it wasnt super high register stuff either. it had a solid bottom but not heavy & filled a hall with beauty as well as power.). she does stood & sang. no fluff. no dancers. just her. diff expreicne altogether.
RIP WH. tears
Thanks for this clip. I forgot what a GREAT singer she was. It’s been sad to watch her decline over the years played out so publicly. In this world of the tabloids and paparazzi nothing can be kept private.
As an artist she was perfection personified. Everyone makes mistakes, it takes a strong person with a strong support system to overcome the damage of drugs. Doing this under scrutiny of the public had to be really difficult for her. Nothing changes the fact that her music was and still is great. That is how I will remember her, as on of the most beautiful voices that the heavens shared with us. God rest her soul.
A long time ago, she was THE voice and also a breathtakingly beautiful woman…it is incredibly sad that she lost her treasured gifts to drugs, and although I know that in the end, she should be the one to blame, she should have been the one to overcome her addiction, I can’t help but think that the person who gave her drugs for the first time, should be punished for ravaging such an iconic and mesmerizing talent like Whitney Houston…and for what it’s worth, I would be saying the exact same thing if she were alive, too. Her magical voice had been long gone…only now her soul passed away, too. Rest in peace, Whitney Houston, hope now you will find peace at last !
Thumbs up for J-Hud! Tonight’s show might become the most-watching Grammy in recent times. For unfortunate reasons.
She had an amazing gift from God – that voice. But shocked to see what a no-class druggie she was on BBB reality show – shrieking at people, and worst of all verbally abusing her child… a wasted waste. So let’s not revise history…she is a good role model for “Say no to drugs”… But no pedestal, please. She didn’t “earn” that voice, she was blessed with it, and valued getting high above it.
