PHILADELPHIA, PA – February 21, 2012 – Comcast Corporation today announced it has selected four new minority-owned independent networks to be broadly distributed on Comcast Cable systems between April 2012 and January 2014. After a thorough evaluation of more than 100 proposals, Comcast selected four networks ― two of which are majority African-American owned and two that are majority American Hispanic owned and operated and programmed in English.
“We are thrilled to work with such talented individuals to launch these new networks that will bring exciting and fresh content to consumers,” said David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast Corporation. “Comcast is committed to delivering programming that reflects the interests of our customers, and we look forward to integrating these great networks into our rich programming line-up.”

Aspire will celebrate the successes, achievements and accomplishments of the African-American community and create new opportunities for the next generation of African-American visionaries. The network will launch by summer 2012.
“Aspire will be a network that encourages and challenges African-Americans to reach for their dreams and will appeal to all generations. Aspire will celebrate our heritage, our groundbreaking achievements and the fearless talent that has shaped American culture. I’m most excited about Aspire creating opportunities for the new voices, new visions and the next generation of storytellers,” said Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

REVOLT will be live, like all great moments in television history. REVOLT will also be immediate, like today’s social networks. We know it was a highly competitive process and we want to thank Comcast for this opportunity to truly change television with REVOLT.”
Hispanic Category:
· El Rey: Proposed by legendary Hollywood director Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures executives John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa, this network is designed to be an action-packed, general entertainment network in English for Latino and general audiences that includes a mix of reality, scripted and animated series, movies, documentaries, news, music, comedy, and sports programming. Comcast made a series of voluntary public interest commitments in connection with the NBCUniversal transaction, one of which is to launch 10 new independently owned and operated networks over the next eight years. Of the 10 networks, four will be majority African-American owned, two will be majority American Latino owned, two will be operated by American Latino programmers, and two will provide additional independent programming. Ultimately, each of the 10 networks will be added on select Comcast systems as part of the digital basic tier of service.

THIS IS TRULY GREAT NEWS FOR MINORITY TALENT!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE INNOVATIVE LEADERS AND THEIR PURSUITS!!!
Amazing moment for minorities. We should celebrate and embrace with our fullest support. Inspiring to see ceilings broken!!
I agree with Elia; our agency has TONS of great scripts which feature minorities. What fun it is too, to get work out there so that new talent can be discovered and mined! So tired of the same people getting the BIG pictures and seeing those SAME faces over and over again. I would love see the old mixed with the new, too. The seasoned talent with NEW faces. Go on! Dare ya. Good luck to all of them.
Nobody is going to watch that shiz. They will all fail, particularly ASPIRE and REVOLT. If people want inspirational programming for black viewers, they’ve already got OWN, yet nobody is current watching it. Black audiences won’t go for ASPIRE when they can view BET and BOUNCE. And REVOLT will start off with music videos like MTV did, but after about a year or two they’ll backslide and start programming nothing but “reality” television shows.
Maybe you will be right. Maybe you will be wrong. But one thing is certain, dinosaurs and bigots like you will become extinct.
And “Gravity’s Silhouette”… pretentious much?
So…where are the white networks?
Dude, 90% of the shows are catered to white people. Dominant culture and all that. You don’t have to worry about seeing shows that star white people. Personally I am not even sure this is a good thing. Diddy and Magic are money grubbing dudes for the most part, so if they aren’t doing interesting original programming (i.e. some scripted), you’ll have to count me out (c) New Edition.
I don’t need to see anymore reality shows. Enough is enough. That network Bounce premiered last year and they have not moved the needle one bit. Gonna have to show me.
The white networks are EVERY other network on television.
Your comment is incredibly stupid. Minority networks were and continue to be created because the white majority continues to not fully represent these people.
There’s no National Association for the Advancement of White People because the white majority hasn’t oppressed itself. There’s no need for historically white colleges because whites weren’t excluded from attending college.
Stop with the knee-jerk reaction.
I dont know how I feel about it. Minority talent should be found on the major networks and not just some obscure small indie networks, but its better than nothing I guess.
I just googled El Rey and Robert Rodriguez, to see if I could find more details about their plans. I didnt find any but I found this (from Wikipedia):
“El Rey is a fictional Mexican village that acts as sanctuary for expatriate American fugitives, first used by author Jim Thompson in his 1959 pulp novel, The Getaway, and again referenced in the 1996 Robert Rodriguez film, From Dusk till Dawn. In both stories, El Rey possesses a near-mythic reputation and represents the protagonists’ ultimate objective. On the DVD commentary, writer Quentin Tarantino reveals that the city is in fact hell.”
So I guess their new network will be Hell on Earth
Sounds awesome!!!
Ala Carte can’t get here soon enough.
Can anyone say OWN??
I thought segregation was illegal
I guess you thought ignorance was bliss too.
Elia, that was perfect.
So a minority network can openly say they’re targeting an audience specifically for their own race, however if a white network ever openly said that their network is targeting only the white community, it’s racist. Not cool.
When are people going to stop making these stupid comments about not having white networks? Major networks say their programming is for white America all the time, they just call it “mainstream” programming instead of using the term white.
Yeah it’s not cool. But neither is oppression, slavery and the stealing of America. Just don’t tune in.
I think you’re missing the point. As other posts have mentioned, most networks are targeted for white audiences. Not explicitly of course, but inherently, as they are controlled by, paid for, and largely consumed by white people. This is a great opportunity for those that are underrepresented. As underrepresentation is actually a form of oppression, networks geared for minority talent and audiences are not “racist against whites.” Rather, they empower non white American citizens that deserve as much exposure and perspective as white Americans.
Every other network features content and talent that is predominantly white. That’s the only thing that’s “not cool”. Oh yea, and the soft bigotry of accepting white privilege as a just, “cool” construct.
Every major network on television features content and talent that is predominantly white. Even shows that are written with a focus on ethnic characters or an ethnic culture are written by predominantly white writers’ rooms. That’s the only thing that’s “not cool”. Oh yea, and the soft bigotry of accepting white privilege as a just, “cool”, or natural construct.
This was a brilliant rouse by Comcast to get their unholy takeover of NBCUniversal approved. I didn’t believe that they were genuine in their efforts to diversify their media holdings and these new “minority” networks just prove my point. The first thing that really stood out to me about these “vanity networks” were Comcasts choices for network leadership. Diddy, Magic Johnson and Robert “Troublemaker” Rodriguez, really? These are all great personalities that have gained great personal wealth from their respective brands, but should they be put in charge of running specialty television networks? Hell no! What a load of crap! If you want to successfully run a television network in 2012, besides having a whole lot of luck along with some black magic and voodoo, you might want to hand these projects over to experienced professionals from within the television industry. Get some of these guys and gals with some years at actual networks under their belts. Not a circus clown types with single-name monikers.
…and I say all this as if the television network model was still relevant, which it isn’t. The future is on the web and Comcast knows this.
But I could be wrong, maybe Comcast will pump the 100s of millions of dollars needed in order for these networks to last past 12 months, lol, maybe they’ll promote them the same way they promote USA Network and SyFy, lol, maybe they’ll have a quarter of the success that the Oprah Winfrey Network) is having, lol, sheesh!
what about Asian Americans? Comcast cares about minorities but they also care more about if the ad agencies will be willing to pay for the ads to make these channels profitable. AZN on Comcast failed for Asians Americans in 2004, not because there weren’t good/decent programming. it failed because no AA ad agencies can educate their clients why they need to focus on English speaking AA. agencies doesn’t know who to categorize English speaking AA. AA ad agencies has been telling their clients they need to focus on in-language AA because that is 3/4 of the AA population. wonder if they see how America responded to Linsanity before they made their decisions out of 100 proposals, would it have made a difference?
I think this is a good start though I agree with a lot of the comments here. I would like to see such programming on the major networks. And yes, most of today’s shows are modeled for a predominantly white audience (though it doesn’t have to be openly said so). I don’t mind this, it is American after all, right? All I ask as a Latina is for a show other than my grandmother’s crappy novela that I can relate to and would recommend to other friends and family who yes, are of the same race.
How is Said Schwartz Latino or Black? Looks like Comcast went for star power (and whatever Said represents), rather than looking at the market needs/opportunities and filling those gaps. And…if we had more writers, producers, and decision makers in the process at existing networks, there would be no need for ethnic creative community to “beg” via some affirmative action program, which is that this is…Would be great to see the full list of proposals submitted to Comcast…wonder how much was driven by pure ego and wanting to ‘hob-nob” with celebs, than by truly servicing the communities…after all, wasn’t that the deal made with the FCC? So true to form FCC and sister agencies — postulate and when the ink dries, it’s business as usual…
Unlike dinosaurs, bigots are here to stay, it sucks, but it’s true!
I agree with Ivie. Comcast is willing to launch 4+ cable television networks for “Blacks” and Latinos, but series’ showcasing these same groups can’t get greenlit at NBC. They’ll spend 100s of millions developing full fledged networks which is almost impossible to do these days (see OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network), yet they won’t spend a few million dollars on developing a more “diverse” for they’re existing, established network(s)?
Now in english, lol “…yet they won’t spend a few million dollars developing more “diverse” series for their existing, established network(s) such as NBC, USA Network, etc.?”
Cause mainstream will not green-light ethnic shows, its still a mainstream world. Why do you think these minorities have pulled monies together to put ethnic shows on Comcast? Cause networks won’t do it. Ratings are not always the reason minorities are not on screen, its plain old prejudice. Wake up Neo.
