EXCLUSIVE:Robert Rodriguez is teaming with producer Alexander Rodnyansky to hatch a sequel to the 2010 action film Machete. Titled Machete Kills, the film is the second in a planned trilogy with what, for my money, is the best ever trailer tag line: “This time, they fucked with the wrong Mexican!” The film will be produced and financed by Alexander Rodnyansky, whose Hollywood expansion plans include a $120 million film fund with Media Talent Group’s Geyer Kosinski. AR Films U.S. is a new partnership between AR Films and Aldamisa Entertainment, whose Sergei Bespalov will manage worldwide sales of Machete Kills in Berlin.
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”
An April production start is being eyed. Talks are underway for Danny Trejo to reprise the title role. Rodriguez expects many of the original cast to return, at least those who didn’t end up sliced and diced in the first film by Trejo. The film is a Quick Draw Production, produced by Rodriguez, Rodnyansky, and Quick Draw’s Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic, and Sergei Bespalov and Rick Schwartz. A script has been written by Kyle Ward, and developed by Rodriguez and Marcel Rodriguez. The aim is to get Trejo back into a signature role that began with a parody movie trailer that was featured between features in Grindhouse, the B-movie feature homage made by Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in 2007. Machete, the feature, came out in 2009, and starred Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey and Robert De Niro. It grossed $44 million worldwide on a $10.5 million budget and showed, among other things, that a bad guy’s intestines can be employed as a rope ladder if you work it just right.
The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.
“Alexander has a tremendous background in moviemaking and huge enthusiasm for continuing the Machete legend onscreen,” Rodriguez said. “I’m really looking forward to working with Alexander and Sergei Bespalov.” Here is a reminder of some of the mayhem Rodriguez and Trejo brought to the screen last time around:

Too bad the trailer was better than the film.
Pass.
I still remember when Rodriguez was a relevant filmmaker. Some even compared him to Tarantino. I know it’s hard to believe now a days.
Really? Tarantino is your idea of relevant? You mean that guy who went into witness protection after Jackie Brown?
If you’re going to be a hater, try to do it within the confines of earthbound reality.
inglorious bastards? christopher waltz? brilliant? he did write and direct.
Don’t get out much, do you?
A sequel to Machete??!! My life is complete.
The Machete character originated in 2001′s Spy Kids, not in Grindhouse
And Danny Trejo played a knife throwing baddie in DESPERADO, and while wasn’t “Machete” could definitely be seen as a precursor to the character.
where is sin city 2??
hahahahahahahahahaha
Isn’t the third one going to be called Machete in Space? I remember reading this somewhere. Rodriguez is funny.
I’m waiting for Machete, Shark Boy and Lava Girl in Machete part three, in 3D
Another film from Rodriguez filled with stereotypes and clichés. It’s amazing that this crap actually gets financed.
clearly you missed the whole point of the movie.
The idea behind making movies is to make $. and “machete” made over $30 million. Must be doing something right.
Consider that shark jumped.
Loved the first one. Excited to see this actually panning out. For the grindhouse type feel, this movie was everything it set out to be.
The first was fun. I’d dig a sequel.
Machete was a homage to the Grindhouse films of the 70′s Exploitation Genres. Rodriguez and Tarantino grew up watching those films so they made films that influenced their careers in films today. Many people (generations) who did not experience the Grindhouse films, will find it difficult to relate to Rogriguez’s, Machete, and will find it “crappy”, not knowing that, that was the element of the film that made it fun. So they are basically paying him a compliment when they say Machete “sucks”, because it’s supposed to.
i agree bro i loved those films and machete cause my dad had told me whats up with them and everything i watch them with other people my age they say its garbage i try to explane why and its one ear out the other
loved it
Can’t wait to see how he antes up the ridiculous.
I worked with Robert Rodriguez@Quentin Tarentino on Dusk Till Dawn and from their insight into film making while different was very cutting edge. You could see that they had a vision then that is considered genius now.I would jump at the chance to work with them again as the experience was educational and fun as they are both cool and down to earth guys.I always play a bad guy so maybe the haters are too mellow for their type of movies and should watch more chick flicks.
I bet the title for the third movie will be MACHETE FOREVER
Haven you seen the first movie completely? The third one will be called Machete kills again
Cannot wait for Machete 2 lol the stereotypes probably the funniest thing ever LMAO the first one was my favorite move of that year!
Uh- Jackie Brown was awesome bitch.
Pinkberry v. Machete: Fear the Spoon
Rodriguez is like Tarantino: perenially adolescent vision. They only know life through movies and simply recycle what’s in their video collection. Everything’s an homage, every movie is about another movie. When Tarantino makes a war movie, it isn’t a movie about war; it’s a movie about war movies and the characters and stuff he’s seen in them. Their sensibilities are too puerile, too arrested for them to ever be great filmmakers. They appeal to an immature, fanboy sensibility that’s impressed by cartoonish violence and self-indulgent speechifying passing as dialogue (call me a hater, that just confirms the immaturity). I’ll watch their films when they come on cable but I put them in their place, glorified B-movies.
Agree! Quintin is still very much relevant but Rodriguez has lost his place. Did we really need 3 “Spy Kids”? And do we really need 3 “Machete”s? Rodriguez needs to grow up as a filmmaker. He keeps doing the same crap over and over again and his “secret” is he is making it for cheap and a lot of people go see it. He is the Tyler Perry of action films. Even Kevin Smith showed some growth when he made “Red State” but Rodriguez is still where he started.
Great news to hear, for hopefully Rodriguez should squeeze in the likes of Fred Williamson,Pam Grier,Sybil Danning(as a Boots McCoy-esque villainess),Nastassja Kinski,Johnny Depp, and Javier Bardem into Machete’s new celluloid adventure.
Always funny to read the comments of those with no talent criticizing individuals with talent. If you’re so brilliant, where is your work? Let’s see it and we will critique it. Don’t have anything? Well I’m stunned.
bravo very whell said..
apparently you’ve never heard of the word..exploitation… have you? and the 3rd movie is already called machete kills again… these are supposed to be popcorn flicks so treat them as such.
The Third movie is supposed to be called ‘Machete Kills Again’ – it is the trailer at the end of the first one. Looking forward to the new offering, should be awesome.
Bigger and more ambitious than ‘Machete’? Can’t believe it, but I will be the first in Germany, who will see the movie. I’m proud that the worldwide sales are managed from Berlin. We love Machete. Jessica and Lindsay, please come to the Berlin premiere!
