EXCLUSIVE: Less than two weeks after Ryan Phillippe committed to his first regular series gig, a starring role in CBS’ untitled Nick Wootton-Greg Berlanti drama pilot (formerly Golden Boy), he has departed the project. I hear the parting of the ways was amicable and happened after doubts on Phillippe’s part that he was ready to commit to the rigors of a network drama series. His decision was in part influenced by his first primetime series experience — he is currently filming a major arc on the final season of DirecTV’s Damages, which has given him hands-on TV series production experience. The move mirrors that of another feature actor, Paul Bettany, who also recently committed to doing his first pilot, Showtime’s Masters Of Sex, before pulling out. (He was replaced by Michael Sheen). Phillippe had been approached about doing network pilots every season for the past few years but he had been reluctant to do it until he finally signed on for Golden Boy. The hot project will now move on with casting a new actor in the lead role, a cop who has a meteoric rise from officer to detective and ultimately police commissioner.

This is so unprofessional and unacceptable. Unfortunately because he is a “celebrity” he’ll get off without even a slap on the wrist. How does his agency/manager put him into a pilot without knowing that he is ready for that level of commitment?
It does say “amicable” though. I’d think if it wasn’t Deadline wouldn’t gloss over it. If scheduling is the issue he should stick with cable.
Who wants to be an actor stuck on a CBS show? It’s a dead end job if you don’t need the money. Even if the script is good as a pilot it will still become a formulaic and by the numbers show like everything else on CBS except for The Good Wife.
Phillipe still has a lot of life left in his career before he settles on CBS. Simon Baker of The Mentalist is rich but no one with an IQ over 100 watches that terrible show.
My excitement level for this pilot just plummeted.
Interesting. If this involved his ex wife we would get 15-20 statements from her camp all spinning it in her direction. But because Ryan is known for keeping to himself, we might never know what was behind the change of heart.
“… MASTERS OF SEX, before pulling out.” Cheeky. Well it would make him a master.
People drop out of projects all the time — for much worse reasons. At least he had the foresight to do it now before filming the pilot and having it get picked up.
I also think that is not professional behavior at all. When someone signs on to do a project-they know what they signed on for. Also, this decision not to do it will cost the program some fans-the ones who wanted to see Ryan in it. Also, regarding Paul Bettany-your choice of words gave me a laugh:Masters of Sex-pulling out-whether the double meaning was inadvertant or not-you amused me today-so-Thank you.
Amazing how feature people (writers, actors, directors) react when they see the amount of work it takes year-round to make a series. It’s actually really hard. Project will be fine, I’m sure. Onward!
*inadvertent*
Guess what: when your lead actor that was such a get departs? It’s no longer such a hot project.
Yep. Maybe he finally read the script.
Somebody get Mike Vogel’s agent on the phone.
After doing Damages, would you really wanna settle for a phoned-in CBS series?
I’m guessing Ryan wants awards and tush — something CBS won’t be able to deliver.
I’m disappointed. I think he is underrated and easy on the eyes. I was really looking forward to this.
Why would the rigors of doing a television series be a surprise to him considering he first became famous on a daytime soap? Granted, he was in all those scenes but he surely must have seen what the stars of the show had to do. I call BS on this “official” reason and will assume that something filthier is the cause for his exit. Knowing Greg Berlanti, it wouldn’t be a surprise.
Which boy band was he in?
There’s a certain Borg quality in Ryan’s acting, not the face which is raphaelite, but his performance shows his never give an inch to a woman. I know Reese Witherspoon thhinks he took and took and took. I’d like to see a guy like that go through his confronting of the self, a full therapy consiousness development and take the time to ‘be in the cave which takes about three or four years, to really develop the acting to become his great self not his pouting pretty self. I give you the comments of our elder in heaven who studies the entertainment industry and roams with the resting stars up there, Leath. Hi everyone. He can come back!
Thank you, Dr. Phil.
Project needs better talent that him anyway – Lee Pace would be excellent or Michael Stahl-David.
