Weekend box office for Universal’s Safe House turned out to be $40.2 million when actual figures came in today. Three-day estimates from Sunday proved a tad conservative at $39.3 million. Along with the $41.2 million actuals Sony reported today for The Vow, that means two movies posted openings higher than $40 million on the same weekend — the first time that has ever happened in the months of January and February.

So I get THE VOW making 40 mil because of Valentine’s Day, but SAFE HOUSE just seems to have come out of nowhere here. Good for them, crazy weekend!
Wow, excellent figures for both movies! I wonder how international estimates would fare.
Weren’t they both spec scripts?
I am not at all surprised at the success of this film. Every on e up here in merry ole Seattle is Talking about enjoying the flick. Even the old, old people are going out to see it.
We will see more record box offices and tv ratings as the 70% of the pirate sites are now shut down and more are on the way,
now lets see if the music biz can make a comeback,
40 mil? Is this earth? Safe House was a horrible idea from it’s conception and turned out as such. Although, anyone who says ‘star power’ is dead has this movie standing in their way.
Wait I’m confused — neither of these movies were based on plastic toys or cartoons or happy meals or TV shows or movies from the 80s! How could they possibly be successful?
Hollywood wake up and get the memo already: audiences actually want the stuff you can do fairly well when you put your mind to it. Put appealing stars in the right movies with decent stories that appeal to the core fans. Stop focusing exclusively on force feeding pre-packaged merchandised crap to teenagers.
The thing is neither of these movies were that great, but they were fine for what they were and they served their core audiences well. SAFE HOUSE didn’t try to appeal to tween girls and THE VOW didn’t try to appeal to older guys.
Hollywood execs, please spare us the COWBOYS & ALIENS and whatever other ludicrously expensive merchandising-based genre mashups you have in the pipeline. Stick to the basics and you will keep your audiences happy and you will make money.
So, lets just break this down. Channing Tatum has starred in a movie that has made $41.2 million. In my opinion a great movie too and great performances.
So going into 21 Jump Street, he has a hit movie and Jonah Hill has been nominated for an Oscar and might win. Not only that 21 Jump Street is an awesome movie with great performances by both actors and truly funny. Think Superbad = WOW and reviews have been all positive so far.
Then he has GI Joe 2 coming out, which should make some serious money, it looks very decent and hopefully his character is in the movie and not just for 10 minutes. This is the Duke we have and it’s the Duke that should stay no matter what.
And finally, he has Magic Mike – gosh how much money is that gonna make, if he get’s $41.2 million for the Vow. It’s gonna be raining men in that movie.
Have to say congrats to The Vow and Safe House = Like A Boss.
Preach it! Couldn’t agree more.
Channing’s come a long way from doing commercials with Danzo Gordon.
Once again, it is astonishing that the industry is surprised when a film geared towards women actually makes money. I don’t want to see car chases, shit blown up, vampires/ghosts, or toys come to life. I want to see two characters talking to each other, preferably one of those characters being a cute guy. I saw THE VOW on Friday night in NYC, and it sold out every performance. The audience was 99% women, with the few guys out with their girlfriends. Good move for the guys.
This is awesome news.
After flatlining for some time, Cinema has come alive again, and I couldn’t be happier.
And off the back end of two spec scripts. Double boom. Word to the mother.
Emma, I agree that cinema needs to be geared more towards women; but instead of getting rid of car chases and shit blown up by men, how about we start writing some STRONG female characters for cinema who do all that stuff and kick some serious butt at the same time, whilst showing their vulnerability in other scenes?
The men do it, so how about we share the love?
Hells yeah.
Collini, out.
