After watching his Sunday paper News of the World fold over a phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch is now weathering another newspaper storm, this one brewing around his cash cow daily The Sun. Five senior staffers were arrested. This time, the allegations are they paid cops for tips and information. According to a Reuters report, Murdoch will head to London next week to meet with staff. Given the fast fold of News of the World, Sun staffers are understandably nervous about the prospect of seeing another Fleet Street paper get an obit.
Per Reuters, News International chief executive Tom Mockridge sent a memo to staff saying: “I have had a personal assurance today from Rupert Murdoch about his total commitment to continue to own and publish the Sun newspaper.” The BBC confirms that Murdoch will continue to back the tabloid. Besides a thorough grilling (and a pie in the face) for Murdoch and son James, the scandal has so far forced the resignation of Murdoch’s top newspaper exec Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, the Murdoch editor Andy Coulson, who became media adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron. Seems like a few more cowboys who allegedly ran roughshod over accepted journalistic ethics are in for a rough time of it and there is sure to be further argument of whether Murdoch should get out of the newspaper game altogether, at least in the UK.

Is Piers Morgan next?
That fish stinks from the head. They should arrest Rupert and be done with it.
Now if only we could start doing the same thing here with everyone at Fox News…*sigh*
Um. Isn’t this EXACTLY what TMZ, and pretty much every other paparazzi outfit, does and has been doing for decades? Why now are they singling out The Sun?
Oh, and I had to laugh out loud at “accepted journalistic ethics,” Mike. That was a good one, though, considering the freaking fiasco that was the Princess Diana death.
Where’s the investigation into Fox News? Are we really supposed to believe the phone-hacking was confined to the UK?
It’s amazing Rupe isn’t being prosecuted for this stuff. Let’s hope his day is nigh. As for TMZ and the paps, if they are caught buying info from the police, both they and the police would be guilty of crimes in this country. The thing about Rupe’s lackeys is they were acting more like Pellicano than journalists. If you can’t tell the difference, you are too cynical for your own good.
Perhaps the day of reckoning for Murdoch & son, Fox News, and The Sun is drawing near. Bet they thought all the arrests, interrogations, and combing through files, computers, and official documents was over.
Piers is in the middle of this and CNN/HLN should grow some balls and investigate him….where is the journalism over there? Pathetic
If any DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD reader, industry worker or anyone with any sense of how things are REALLY run in this long established, corrupt corporate world… they’d know that someone like Rupert Murdoch will always be protected. That is -as long as he’s still useful to his masters.
“Bad things happen when good people standby and do nothing”.
Phone hacking, wars, conflicts, drugs, political assassinations and “accidents”, regime change, “protest” movements… its the Murdochs and their like, that sell the lies, the misery and death that pass as convenient truth. The media is the world’s biggest Weapon of Mass Destruction, and the “good people” have no idea that they’ve always been the target!
