UPDATE: I’m told that as of right now, Aloni’s top client Chris Nolan has not left the CAA fold. We’ll have to wait and see if that changes. There is speculation that Aloni could perhaps become a manager, or that he would land at WME. If the latter move is going to happen, it hasn’t yet because even that agency was caught off guard by what happened. I’ve also heard that no matter what happens, CAA is looking at a huge commission cushion from Nolan’s Inception, Batman trilogy and Superman, which he’s producing. The prospect of that revenue made it easier to decide life’s too short, which is evidently what happened between CAA and Aloni.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE: In a major and surprising development, Dan Aloni has left CAA abruptly. I’m told it was the result of an eroding relationship with the agency and his coworkers. It sounds like his approach didn’t mesh with the CAA culture. I’ve heard that it led to his firing. Which just happened. Aloni came over to CAA in October 2005 after a long stint at UTA. He has an amazing list of writers and directors, including The Dark Knight Rises helmer Chris Nolan, Tom Shadyac, David Goyer, Michel Gondry, Dean Parisot and others. I’m not sure whether Aloni will move to another agency, and will follow this story as it develops. It does put a lot of clients in play, that’s for sure. I’ve heard that Aloni kills for his clients, but isn’t the easiest guy to get along with.
Back in 2005, CAA hired the UTA agent and partner by offering him and a half dozen other star tenpercenters at rival agencies a pile-load more money than they were earning. (Aloni had been smarting from UTA’s not elevating him to the UTA board after a restructuring.) Aloni’s defection unleashed a frantic feeding frenzy as both CAA and UTA fought for his clients. (UTA hung onto Judd Apatow and some others but lost about a dozen clients who followed Aloni.) Aloni’s departure contributed to the de-spoking of but UTA’s vaunted Comedy Wheel, which mixed a top list of comedy writers and directors to put together reasonably priced laffers and worked in up and comers to launch their careers. Besides Aloni, agents like Jason Heyman and Martin Lesak also left as did comedy clients like Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell. Since then Aloni has frequently been at odds with the CAA managers.
The question now is how many of Aloni’s clients CAA can hang onto. Internal meetings are taking place now.

Anyone say Jerry Maguire moment at CAA … ?
Not quite, but thanks for chiming in.
Actually that’s exactly what it is. But thanks for chiming in negatively.
is your real name Bob Sugar?
Worst guy ever!
Worst guy ever? He’s the only competitor in town who has ever picked up the phone and told me I had an issue with one of my clients instead of taking the client. Classy move and I’ll never forget it.
What???
Classy move that you’ll “never forget”…really?
It’s par for the course. Contain your excitement.
Only agent who has done that in my 20+ year career. I guess if I were in trouble with my clients more often it’d be par for the course?
bingo! the whole “I don’t like black people? I am Mister black people” moment right?
ICM should back the money truck up to Aloni. They could use him right now.
Caa can do that….ICM can’t. because what icm really needs is….money.
yeah, i’m sure they’re so broke with their packages on 2 1/2 Men, Big Bang Theory, The Simpsons, Modern Family, Mike & Molly, Grey’s Anatomy, they can probably barely keep the lights on
ICM has money to pay his salary. What they don’t have on the feature-side are a lot of gross player directors….
If you keep Nolan, they will come.
Ho Ho Ho, if Hollywood ever makes a movie based on The Green Giant, here’s your guy!
Wow… can’t say I’m not surprised. guy didn’t fit in at all
He looks like someone people would pay to punch
Soooo…Dan Aloni is the underdog?
People loved him during his stint at UTA. All the young guys followed him around, hanging on his every word. Abrasive? All those guys were. He still worked absurdly hard, was on top of everything, and, for the most part, people were loathe to cross him. There’s value in that. Doubt his clients jump ship unless it was a “real” freak-out, which some people have alluded to, although that might be CAA spin.
He has a BIG head.
What do you mean when you say he didn’t “mesh with the CAA culture”?
Not a team player to say the least. haha.
Why does CAA need an emergency meeting if they FIRED HIS ASS?
it means CAA is a cult and Aloni didn’t do his due diligence in drinking the kool aid…
Wow, that is a shocker. Where does he go from here? I can’t imagine the anti-MP Lit ICM or his former UTA. WME? .. Management? You know what would be really interesting? Verve. It’d be the only place where he could agent and still keep a big chunk of his 10%.
Dan Aloni: Worst. Guy. Ever.
Ever. Makes Zimmer look warm and fuzzy.
Anyone have any first-hand Aloni stories to share?
Clearly none of you posting these “negative” comments know him personally. He works harder for his clients than anyone I know. Which is why nearly all of his clients (and many fellow agents) followed him from UTA. He is a great agent and an even greater individual.
Thanks Mrs. Aloni. You raised him right.
Do they ever “know”? I mean, REALLY?
I knew him personally and agree that he is a terrific agent. I do think working in a corporate environment like CAA was not a great fit. I do think he will become a manager/producer. Good luck Dan.
Agreed. He has a tremendous work ethic and kept a lot of his CAA colleagues on their toes. He’s a mentor figure and worked to get people promoted. If he didn’t fit in it’s likely because he didn’t have the same level of flash and hubris. His chief concern was always the work. It does seems like a loss for CAA, regardless of how it’s spun.
Agreed. As far as agents go, he’s a good guy and upfront about deals. Very smart. Can be condescending, but nothing out of the ordinary. Not exactly a master politician though (it was really obvious when he was pissed off, a bit too obvious), and he probably bristled at some of the bureaucratic “team building” BS they force feed. It’s a time drain and makes a lot of people feel like they’re about to get screwed.
good at agenting, absolutly, to be sure. But how in the world can you make a pitch for dan aloni being a greater individual than agent? is that supposed to be a joke?…look at where youre starting, a guy who wanted to be a hollywood agent. There are a few true gems, like in any field, but on the whole, people who behave in their business lives like even the middle of the road hollywood agent are pretty far down the list of people knocking on heavens door…yelling and screaming at people, threatening them with the most vile of threats isn;t the mark of an amazing individual. Someone good at their job, again, sure…but it’s generally the most ethically challenging and deplorable job, in one of the more ethically challanged industries there is…We love movies, Dan Aloni is a respected piece of that complex puzzle, but outside of his family and close friends (i have no idea on these) he pretty much gave up on pursuing a calling of any real integrity a long time ago. he loves money, he operates from ego, and dont you dare get in the way of either.
Yo man, I don’t know where I sit on this whole Dan Aloni thing but I love the shit out of what you just wrote and hope to God that you are a working writer because your command for the situation is acute and incredibly articulate.
Dan the Man for Senate. Honorable Senator Aloni from California.
Come on Dan you know it’s the best job for you, jump into the race.
Well, that’s one less CAA agent to pitch my specs to and be ignored by.
I love how there are so many script gurus, screenplay contests, etc. out there and nobody tells aspiring writers one simple fact–high-level agents aren’t your way into the business. Managers are. Young hungry managers in LA and New York break people into the business. Newsflash: Christopher Nolan’s agent doesn’t have time for you.
That’s exactly the point. Did Aloni discover Nolan when he did “Following” on 16mm for $30,000 and sign him? My assumption is he signed him much later down the line.
Michael Hazanavicius was signed by CAA in Jan of this year. Suddenly, CAA “discovered” talent. Agents are in the “making money for their clients” biz, NOT “discovering Palme d’Or winners biz.” That’s not a knock on what they do; it is their livelihood. Talent needs to work hard on their own terms. Agents THEN come around and, if the agent is good, will take the client to the next level.
Get a manager or a producer who believes in you (if you are a writer/director), and then the agent will come after the fact.
.
Amen. You are so right. Sing it.
You don’t know Dan– if you say “Worst guy ever”
You simply, obviously, can’t know him….
There was a time when we worked with Dan quite a bit, and my recollection is that he was a straight shooter with great clients. We never had a negative interaction.
If there’s an agent Hall Of Fame Aloni is in it! No one gets average to poor directors more work then him. This guy spins magic.
my experience too.
Same here. He was only ever great to me. Could fix problems with one call. Fought for all his clients. He’s one of the best. Never played studio politics at the expense of his clients.
Dan is the worst guy ever if you’re a sensitive moron wasting his time. If you’re not, then he’s probably the best guy ever.
It’s just not adding up that caa fired him yet they’re scrambling and calling emergency meetings. sounds like major spin that i’m not buying.
is Jonah Nolan Chris Nolan’s brother not at WME?
Jonah was for a long time, but Chris’s team (presumably Aloni) was so good that Chris got Jonah to jump.
That’s the story for Chris’s old assistant at Syncopy, so call bullshit if you want.
