A week after the bloodbath on his Fox series The X Factor, in which judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones were axed, Simon Cowell today addressed the controversy. In an interview with confidant and former flame, Extra’s Terri Seymour, he suggested that the pink slips came via a direct order from Fox. “It was fairly straight what they wanted, and we were told it had to happen straight away,” Cowell said. He praised Abdul for being “gracious” about her dismissal in their phone conversation. “She understands it’s business; it’s never personal… I would’ve liked to have kept her.”
As for Scherzinger, “I don’t think she’s mad. I think she’s disappointed,” Cowell said. He heaped praise on “L.A.” Reid, the only personality beside him to make it to Season 2. “There’s not a record executive out there who is as good as him for the job.”
Cowell dismissed suggestions that things didn’t quite work on the first season of The X Factor, evoking his now infamous pre-launch ratings prediction. “Most things did work. It’s only because I opened my big mouth and said we were going to get 20 million [viewers]. If I hadn’t said that, everybody would be saying the show as a new show was a huge success.”
UPDATE: Britney Spears X Factor Judge — Offered $10 Million To Become Judge On The Show
Cowell shot down an Internet rumor that he is after pop star Beyonce for a new judge, saying that he hasn’t spoken to her while inadvertently revealing X Factor‘s budget. “I read it online that I offered her $100 million a year. It’s complete nonsense. The budget of the show is $100 million a year.” Also not on the list, fellow new mom Mariah Carey. “I would love her, but you can’t expect someone who’s just had two kids to make the kind of commitment you would need on this show.” Elton John? “No. He wouldn’t do it. And it would be very difficult to work with him.” Madonna? “She would be great” but “expensive.” Katy Perry? “She would be fun –she’s hard in a good way, and she’s feisty.”
Cowell also dismissed a notion that he is necessarily after A-list stars and suggested that having Grammy-winning stars hasn’t helped NBC’s The Voice much. “I would ask… how many hit records have they made? How many artists have they discovered?”

What’s the X Factor?
He’s rich. I get it. But has anyone become more irrelevant, more quickly than this guy?
boring.
snore.
zzzzzzzzzzz
Wake me when he’s gone.
The show was awful, close to an unmitigated disaster in spite of its ratings. They all know it, which is why mass changes had to happen asap.
The show was just over-the-top on literally everything. Too many stage effects, too many extras on stage i.e. dancers, too many melodramatic moments… If the show was about the singer then why could I hardly hear them over everything else?
It was like the Europeanized Hullabaloo
Umm… how many hit records and artists has The X Factor US produced?
I thought X-FACTOR was much better than THE VOICE or AMERICAN IDOL last/this season. For all the people who like to knock it, they clearly didn’t actually watch the show. It was really good. Simon is still the best talent judge on any of these shows.
I actually preferred X factor to all the other ‘talent shows’. They had better characters because everyone on AI seems to be formulaic & look the same, while the voice never caught on w/ me.
However, I agree with the show’s axing of everyone except Paula. I thought she did a REALLY good job with the groups, it was the toughest assignment. The one problem they needed to fix is that the female judges just couldn’t seem to think as individuals, and towards the end it felt like everyone ganged up on Simon just because he had all the girls.
I don’t think Simon axed her, I think Fox execs axed her…and he as much said so. You can imagine how she feels because this is the 3rd or 4th reality show she’s been fired from.
Well either Simon or fox is lying about Paula’s dismissal which I think is such a disastrous mistake. I hope Simon comes to his senses
Disastrous? Really? Who cares?!?! The show was a snooze. Paula couldn’t open her own show on CBS. She brings nothing to this show. Nor for that matter does Simon. He’s OLD NEWS!
The FOX decade is coming to an end. They had a great run.
Poor Simon was powerless when the network told him to get rid of Paula. Somehow, I don’t believe it.
What about Neil Diamond? Or Carly Simon?
They need to get Janet.
There’s an Australian woman named Shanon Cook who does great musician interviews on CNN from time to time. She might be great as the new host like a Cat Deeley. Unless Simon is determined to be an all-eyes-on-me Accent Queen. Which is probably the case.
Um, yeah, Simon, thanks but no thanks. The thing is, we’re just not that interested in what you have to say. It’s 14:59 and counting.
If you hurry, you might be able to catch the red-eye for Heathrow. Buh-bye.
Yeah, I can’t think of anyone who would get me to watch…
Does anyone really think that Fox is “making” Simon do anything? Strange how he is now hiding behind them with this decision.
Whatever you say but X Factor killed American Idol. After all that huge things on X Factor American Idol looks cheap. And viewers saw it and didn’t return.
Oh, just get Cheryl Cole already ! She would make the show ‘fresh’ and could be an instant star. I was looking forward to the show UNTIL she was on the panel…after she got fired, I didn’t even finish the first episode…it was just the same old boring talent show with basically the same judges.
This is just more evidence they’re out of sync with how to present this show to US Audiences. Having Paula there INSTANTLY makes people detached as they see it as an Idol knock-off. Simon is correct that they do
Not need A listers but look at the chemistry on The Voice! Xtina is xnnoying BUT makes the group more interesting. The minute the strange news of XFactor getting rid of Cheryl Cole broke it was clear this show lacked vision. Bring back Cheryl.
“If I hadn’t said that, everybody would be saying the show as a new show was a huge success.” LOL
