Steve Levitan is back at Fox. The network has picked up Rebounding, a single-camera comedy from the Modern Family co-creator, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, with Modern Family helmer Jason Winer on board to direct. The pilot order comes a couple of days after 20th Century Fox TV — where Levitan, Port and Wiseman are under overall deals — sent the comedy spec to the broadcast networks. Written by Port and Wiseman, Rebounding was inspired by Port’s real-life experiences. It is
described as an uplifting comedy about a man recovering from the death of his fiance with the help of the idiots on his pick-up basketball team. Levitan, who has been very involved in the development of the project, was originally attached to direct but his schedule is not permitting, so Winer, who directed the pilot for Modern Family, will helm Rebounding, exec produced by Levitan, Port and Wiseman. This is a second pilot directing gig for Winer this season, along with the NBC comedy 1600.
Levitan and his Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd had a falling out with Fox over the 2008 cancellation of their multi-camera comedy series Back To You after one season. Levitan and Lloyd spoke publicly against the decision and famously refused to shop their followup project, blockbuster Modern Family, to Fox. The relationship has since been repaired, and now Levitan is back in business with Fox and its entertainment president Kevin Reilly. Earlier this season Port & Wiseman worked on a Fox series, serving as co-executive producers on freshman breakout New Girl. There they worked with Winer who directed multiple episodes of the show. Fox, which also picked up 2 cast-contingent comedy pilots this afternoon, has one high-profile half-hour script still in contention, a sibling comedy from How I Met Your Mother co-creators/executive producers Carter Bays & Craig Thomas and HIMYM executive producer Chris Harris.

Can’t wait for this one!
C’mon Fox-Bays and Thomas are awesome- HIMYM’s ratings are through the roof in their 7th season.
Glad to see some newcomers are finally getting a shot.
This show gonna be huge
i hear wiseman can dunk.
Smart and Funny crew and very savvy pitching this late. I truly believe pitching off the regular Pilot cycle enhances the opportunity for getting the green light.
Perfect. The hackiest network getting together with the hackiest guy in the business, Levitan. It’s a known fact that his biggest skill is self-promotion, and everyone at Modern Family tries to minimize the damage he does to the series. But maybe he and Fox can find magic again, like they did with Stacked.
I don’t know who “greg” is, but I work on Modern Family and that’s not true. Yes, Levitan is a self-promoter, but that’s just another word for hustler, and that’s good for the show. No, he’s not the best writer on the show and the other writers constantly have to clean up his messes, and yes, he makes creative decisions that should be left to people who are more talented in that department than he is, but when it comes to creating buzz for the show no one does it better and we all benefit from it.
I think that’s what we call a seriously back-handed compliment.
This is a parody post right? You basically agreed with “greg.”
It’s all BS. The fact is in Hollywood… If you are white, you get to write. If you are a minority, you are not the priority.
I am jealous! I’m jealous, jealous, jealous. their shit always reads like shit to me and I can’t even sell my shit, so obviously my shit is shittier than theirs! if they didn’t all look like that I think I’d really hate them. except Levitan, he is one handsome dude. anyway, I’m sure they’re nice guys. and clearly talented enough. more power to them. namaste!
Shitty writer, I have not read their pilot but what this splashy press release neglects to say is all the other networks passed on the project even with their “so called” pedigrees. The only place that bought it was where their deal is. Maybe it’s a great pilot but no one else was too excited by it. Time shall tell.
It’s not a great pilot – it’s flat, standard and safe, the definition of competent. Nothing unique or exciting.
Haven’t read it but it seems like kind of edgier and darker subject matter than most network fare. How is it standard and safe?
It’s standard and safe because the characters are one-dimensional and trite, the humor isn’t sharp or witty (for instance, a guy who notices shoes are Tory Burch label – he must be gay!), and the sentimentalism overpowers anything edgy, although the sentimentalism is a strong point in my opinion. It’s kind of like Dan Fogelman-lite.
Read the pilot. Nothing special. I’d go so far and say it’s boring. Read it yourself. It shows you what a good press release and Levitan attached can do.
Levitan looks like Brad Pitt compared to these other guys. Glad they are behind the camera.
