Summit Entertainment announced today that it will premiere Alex Cross wide on October 26, 2012, joining Dimension’s Halloween 3D and Fox’s surfing pic Of Men And Mavericks on that date. The adaptation of the James Patterson novel stars Tyler Perry as the detective/psychologist protagonist who meets his match in a serial killer (Matthew Fox) who viciously murders Cross’ wife when Cross thwarts his earlier attempt to commit a murder. The drama becomes a mano a mano battle between cop and the killer who is one of the most memorable villains in Patterson’s novels. Perry’s casting has created quite a stir among the books’ fans, some of whom question whether he has the dramatic chops to pull off a dramatic role like Cross — especially based on his prior work on the comedy side in his Madea movies. Plus, he has to fill the shoes of Morgan Freeman, who played Cross in two previous Patterson adaptations. Rob Cohen directed Alex Cross, and Edward Burns, Rachel Nichols and Jean Reno co-star. Summit nabbed distribution rights to the franchise reboot last year, beating out among other bidders Lionsgate, which has a longstanding relationship with Perry and bought Summit last month.

Huge mistake casting TP. This will bomb, the guy flat out cannot act unless he’s dressed up like his granny
Tyler Perry over Idris Elba in this role….sad
The trailer for this film better be spectacular. At present the thought of watching a Cross film without Morgan Freeman AND Tyler Perry in Freeman’s shoes, makes me sad and a little angry. But I love the books and I’ll watch the trailer. At the end of the trailer I’ll know if this film will be a joke titled “Alex CrossDresser”.
Idris Elba went off and did Luther, which is outstanding, so every cloud…
I wonder if Halloween 3D is still going to happen. Haven’t really heard anything about it in awhile.
I wanted to see this when it was going to star Idris Elba – but I have zero interest in the Tyler Perry version.
Let me start by saying I’m African-American. Now…
SERIOUSLY, Tyler Perry? Shouldn’t the release date have been MOVED UP to April 1st?
I agree with previous comments. It’s not only sad. But it’s an insult to the tastes of African-American moviegoers in general and to Morgan Freeman and the THOUSANDS of struggling African-American actors trying to nab a decent leading role in particular.
Patterson’s novels are A BRAND, so you don’t necessarily need a name in the role. Though Idris would have been AMAZING. (How does one let a deal like that go south?)
Tyler’s doing his thing writing and directing. And nobody’s mad at him for that. He’s got a right to sell his wares and his particular brand of storytelling. But Alex Cross belongs either to a stellar unknown or someone with hell of acting chops. As I said once before, they need to change title from “I, ALEX CROSS” to “I ALEX, CROSS.”
Hopefully they’ll eek out a $15 – 20 million opening weekend and consider it a hit.
This movie will not be released. You heard it here first.
Alex Cross will be a bridge too far for Mr. Perry. Even if he’s halfway decent, the people won’t give it to him.
I think we all should give Tyler a chance. Morgan was great in the role of Alex, but lets get real people, he was way to old for the part. When I read the books not once did I invision the man looking like Morgan Freeman. Alex was always, in my opinion, a handsome, wel built, athletic man. Lets see if yler can pull this off.
Morgan freeman was a horrible choice for Alex originally. alex isnt that old! and Freeman sure wouldnt be doing the fights that Alex does.
i think Tyler Perry can work, since Denzel isnt takin the spot;-)
I think Denzel Washington would’ve been a better choice. I can see him as Alex Cross.
tyler perry really.i like him and his movies that he has done and the madea characters but dang he is not the man i vision when i read your alex cross novels..big mistake, its to late now.deals done huh?
I think Will Smith would play the role of Alex Cross better because all the Detective Cross series I’ve read, he’s suppose to look a little like Ali, and if I’am not mistaking, I, Alex Cross is about his niece getting killed.
Whoa everyone. I am a loyal Alex Cross reader and I felt, even though I love Morgan Freeman’s acting, that he was mis-cast as Alex Cross orginally. The books depict Alex as a younger person that Morgan’s personna. Don’t rush to judge Tyler before seeing the movie. I thought Eddie Murphy would not be able to handle a dramatic role until he did that wonderful job in Dreamgirls and should have won the Oscar for Supporting Actor.
Looking forward to the opening of Alex Cross as a projectionist I normanly on see parts of the movies I run, this one I will pay to see the intire show.
So, I was leary about the Perry casting just like everyone else…then I went back to the Dark Knight when Nolan casted Heath Ledger as The Joker. Before that movie came out I was saying “Horibble choice, why would he do that” just like I hear people saying about Perry. I learned my lesson from that, and read that James Patterson himself said that he was happy with the choice of Perry.
I also agree with Freeman being miss cast originally as well, at first I always thought Denzel was the right choice, but then I remembered Patterson saying that Alex resembled Muhamad Ali, then I thought well the real person who should have played Alex Cross all this time is Will Smith.
I think Tyler Perry can do anything he has a mind to. Just because he hasn’t played this type of roll before doesn’t mean he can’t do it. You can do anything you want in this world. You can’t judge something or someone before you even see it.
Prior to the shooting of the movie, I felt like many of you. Why does Perry, who can (and does) cast himself in projects he owns, get such a ‘prized’ role that an unknown (like myself.lol) would have sold a kidney to do?
I worked on this film. I watched him day in and day out. Simply put, the guy earned it. It may have been a misguided marketing decision at first, but the fact is, he pulled it off. He stayed in the moment EvERY shot! He required and demanded professionalism as well.
You know… I will never get a shot because I have only done some theater, local commercials, industrials and little independent films. Perry won’t get a break because of the Madea franchise. (hey… Maybe Morgan can take over the Madea role. Lol)
Maybe. Just maybe we should reserve judgment until we see the film.
Remember, Robin Williams had Dead Poets Society and shocked the shit out of all of us.
See you guys Oct 27 to hear your movie review.
I think everyone is being way to judgemental of Tyler Perry. James Patterson approves, and that should be enough. He wrote it
