EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that MGM is making an offer to Joel Kinnaman to play the title role in its Robocop remake. The film’s being directed by Jose Padilha, helmer of two action packed installments of Elite Squad. Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script.
Kinnaman, who’d take the role originated by Peter Weller in the 1987 Paul Verhoeven original, most recently turned in a memorable performance in Safe House opposite Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. He burst on the scene in the AMC series The Killing. Before that he starred in Snabba Cash, which was directed by Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa. Kinnaman, who’s repped by UTA and Magnolia Entertainment’s Shelley Browning, becomes the second high profile casting move made by MGM this week. The studio is in early talks with Dwayne Johnson to play Hercules.

YESSSSS MORE JOEL KINNAMAN PLEASE HOLLYWOOD!!! Awesome news.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Joe. Great actor. Big fan of The Killing. There is just something about him. So happy for him.
don’t get it, he’s the weakest part of that show
LOVE. THIS. MAN. Thank you MGM!
Who killed Rosie Larsen? It was O.C.P.
SO Excited for Joel Kinnaman and Jose Padhila! This is such a great pair…can’t wait to see this!
whoa, I have been even more excited for the remake of Robocop ever since the auto bailouts. the Clint Eastwood commercial during the superbowl got me even more amped.
but to hear Joel Kinnaman might play the Robocop????? a swede??? it’s almost too much. i love that guy!
its halftime in hollywood.
Cannot get enough of him. But even so I would skip a Robocop remake.
I’m not interested in this franchise at all, but the casting of Joel might get me in the theatre seat. I find him a breath of fresh air. Granted I’d love more for his career than “action star,” but if it raises his profile, fantastic! As long as we keep him working and onscreen (small or large) then I’ll be happy to enjoy and follow his career. All the best, Joel!
Thank you for using he word “remake” instead of “reboot.”
“The studio is in early talks with Dwayne Johnson to play Hercules.”
Say what?
Bombs Away!!!!
Casting decisions aside, this is just one more example of the unimaginative studio leadership in Hollywood. Really, another remake? Are there any studio suits willing to produce truly original content these days?
Finally, more Joel Kinnaman! America has been clamoring to see him in a vehicle like this. Strut your stuff, Joel! I’m so hyped that I’ve already seen this movie–twice! Both times the crowd gave a standing ovation and screamed “Joel! Joel!” for five minutes before theater management had to fire tear gas into what was fast becoming a death-crazy riot-mob. Ask me any question, and the answer is, “More Joel Kinnaman!” When my nana heard the news she was finally able to let go, knowing that our future was secure.
Doesn’t Robocop belong in the same pile with Short Circuit?
I guess if it’s the remake trash from the 80′s pile, then, yes.
What’s next in Creativity Town, I wonder… a remake of Tootsie with the cast of Glee?
