EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has acquired the action film Cowboy Ninja Viking and has Marc Forster ready to make the graphic novel adaptation his next film. The graphic novel and a Disney-developed script by Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese were acquired by Universal after the script came in and was deemed too edgy for Disney’s family film mandate. The intention is to begin production later this year, after Forster completes the Brad Pitt-starrer World War Z for Paramount and Skydance. The hope is to spawn a franchise.
Cowboy Ninja Viking is based on the Image Comics graphic novel by AJ Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo. The title character comes from a secret government program to turn schizophrenics into assassins. The protagonist comes through the program with the skill sets of a cowboy, ninja and a viking. While most of the patients involved in the program are sent back to insane asylum after the program went awry in Iraq, he escapes and uses his skills to track down the billionaire who masterminded the program.
The film will be produced by Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Mark Gordon and Bryan Zuriff through MG360, the joint venture between The Mark Gordon Co and Management 360. Wernick & Reese are also producing. The scribes are repped by WME, and Forster by CAA and Management 360.
Forster’s zombie apocalypse World War Z will be released by Paramount on December 21, 2012.
This is the second time that Universal has gotten a Disney-developed fast tracked project that was based on a graphic novel. The studio is about to start production on Oblivion, the Joseph Kosinski-directed post-apocalyptic thriller that stars Tom Cruise. Like Cowboy Ninja Viking, Disney let it go and was reimbursed its development costs. In the case of the latter film, the producers got a short window to shop the project and if they weren’t successful, Disney would have redeveloped it.

Yes, this is a no brainer after the massive successes of COWBOYS & ALIENS and MACHINE GUN PREACHER.
No way this thing can miss!
I can see the sequelae now:
COwboy Ninja Viking Navy Seal
Cowboy Ninja Viking Navy Seal RoboCop
Feel free to add your own sequel.
This is the worst idea for a movie ever. I hope this crashes and burns.
you’re being too kind!!! this is truly horrifying in every way, shape and form. what executives are being allowed to make these decisions????? dear god.
This seriously sounds like those sub B-movies they used to make with gag titles like STRIPPER CHEERLEADER VAMPIRES.
Seriously, it does.
But those movies didn’t cost $175,000,000.00
Yes…finally a movie about cow rustling, assassin, Irish raping heroes. Yes. Thank you.
SO MUCH HATE in the world. Marc Forester is one capable director and the film is going to be of a high quality. Plus the premise is an interesting spin on the Jason Bourne’s storyline.
Thank you for your input Ray AKA Marc Forester’s publicist. However, as movie-goers, we all know a stupid idea when we hear one.
Is the staff from the Onion occupying Deadline? WTF? This is real?
Cowboy. Ninja. Viking. Terrible. Times. Three.
Yeah, I hope they keep the title. It’s great. (not)
This script was awful. It read like a power rangers movie if the teenage mutant ninja turtles had cameo’s in it.
Worst title ever…
Is it wrong that I love this?
The only plausible, possible explanation for this is that Ron Meyer is looking to get fired, and has pre-negotiated a golden parachute buy-out of his contract.
This sounds totally dope. I like these mash-up films. And this is a great comic. I’m down to see how they approach this. Yeee-haww-aawwwssssoooo-aaarrrgghhh! (thats the Cowboy Ninja Viking yell).
Good yell… Bad idea.
This was the guy who did that last lame Bond movie, right? Can the director be blamed for Quantum of Solace?
To hell with all you haters. It’s going to be a blockbuster because it’s based on a comic book. This will be much bigger than Cowboys & Aliens because it has Ninjas and Vikings and it’s based on a graphic novel. This is why Universal is the #1 studio for the past three years they know what the public wants.
What a joke. Except they’re actually making this stupid idea for a movie. The title alone makes Surf Nazis Must Die seem normal.
These studios are gluttons for punishment and are yet to realize that graphic novels are actually just elaborate comics books and about as deep. Millions of geeks will be browsing the web and playing video games as this turkey comes and goes with just a whimper…
This is from the guy that made Better than Fiction, right? (long sigh).
Agree with Joe. This reads like a heading for ‘The Onion’.
I don’t root for films to fail. Only bad ideas.
Oh please he wont direct this, he’ll take a producer check (develop this)and will bait and switch them and find another director.
OK, I’ll try to take the glass-is-half-full approach. At least it’s not another reboot/remake/prequel/sequel piece of garbage Hollywood seems to be stuck on these days. Cast it right and who knows???
You couldn’t be more wrong, and I’m guessing you never read the comic. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve read in years, plenty of action too.
