Who didn’t choke up for Clint Eastwood and his ‘Halftime in America’ car pitch? But Samsung Galaxy Note cell phone spot was the absolute worst. (And giving a we-know-it’s-crappy wink at the end doesn’t forgive it.)
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I think Toyota really did exceedingly well with their post especially considering how atypical it is compared to their marketing efforts in general.
Battleship and John Carter sucked. The Avengers looked fun. Both Hyundai spots were fresh and original. Elton should’ve stayed home..
Battleship just looks waaaay too much like Transformers. The marketing effort is literally amounting to “let’s trick people into thinking they’re going to see a Transformers sequel”.
ALL tanked so far in 1st half.
That french bulldog on the skechers spot was damn cute, but (obviously) could’ve done without Mark Cuban. And poor Elton…
M&M’s was great.
The Chevy apocalypse one was choice.
I thought the Ram Clint Eastwood ad was very moving. Good for them.
Who didn’t choke up? I didn’t. Because it sucked. BORING.
The best add was the Ritz cracker streaking, but that was before the game.
ALL the rest also tanked in 2nd half.
Battleship proved to be more a must see. The voice’s Tarantino-esqe with Betty white and Matthew Broderick’s crv were the best— all others sucked big time
Doritos killed it this year!!
I thought the best commercial was for that tax company where the little kid pees in the pool.
Thought the second-best commercial was the Chevy one where the parents got the kid a refrigerator, but he thought they were giving him the Chevy.
And I thought the rest of the ads were pretty average.
So, what was the ‘name’ of that “tax company”? Guess it doesn’t matter ’cause I’m sure it’ll be their biggest 2012 tax write off.
Volkswagon’s chubby dog / funnier than that Vader kid was cute, as was Ferris Bueller Redux. Most of the rest pretty weak. Seinfeld, boring, does anyone under 35 even remember the Soup Nazi? E-trade baby bit’s getting old. Beer spots were really weak, not funny despite the rescue dog. Good thing the game was interesting cuz the ads really weren’t.
Yeah.. Budweiser spot was weak. What’s the point of keeping the horses and the dog in it if they aren’t going to do anything?
The KIA/Hyundai slots were really good, esp. the “Dream Sequence”. The Camaro “Graduation Present” was good, too.
I thought the Pepsi “Elton” bit was lame; I agree with Andy, Elton should have stayed home.
The Skechers “Racing French Bulldog” really sucked-”Whoa, the doggie moonwalks and raps to a 20 yr. old song? WOW!”.
The “Battleship” ad confirmed my worst suspicions; a low IQ CGI fest- apparently aliens are going to attack us with giant metal boulders and an Independence Day style force field. Oooooohh….what are we going to do?
I thought the Hyundai/KIA ads all sucked, but then I wouldn’t drive an Asian import if you gave me one so it’s fair to call me biased. I was impressed with the amount of money they apparently spent, as it felt like every other ad was a Hyundai spot.
I loved loved the Teleflora commerical no better than any other! Yes I loved MaDonna and she did a wonderful and spectacular job once again.
My party exploded at the M&m’s commercial and got REAL quiet during the Adriana Lima commercial and the Fiat one with that incrediblly hot babe.
It was technically right before kick off, but I loved the Hyundai Rocky Theme Song spot. What a classic and memorable piece to attache your brand to!!!
John Carter tanked badly. It looks like a complete mess.
Battleship looks like a shallow ripoff of a Transformers sequel, so of course that crap is going to do huge business. The marketing department really pulled Universal’s ass out of a fire. I still can’t believe they committed over $200 million on this.
The Kia ad was hilarious and on point. But the best ad of all was the Ferris Bueller ad. Somehow they managed to recapture the magic of that character when I didn’t think that was possible.
You are exactly right about “Battlefield,” Jim. How Hasbro convinced Universal to pocket $200 million on a what looks to be a “Transformers” rip off is beyond me.
Doritos Sling Baby Commercial rocked. Funny and it had heart. Clint was classy as well.
Honestly, most of them seemed like empty calories. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but I can’t imagine the Time Warner Cable ad with Ricky Gervais and Mary-Louise Parker resulted in one new subscriber.
The Samsung Galaxy ad seemed to be making fun of iPhone buyers (you know, the ones who camp out to get the new iPhone and miss the Super Bowl… except who are they, again?), but all I know about the Galaxy is that it apparently has a pen (which my Treo had in 2003, so somehow it doesn’t feel like a breakthrough).
I though the Seinfeld ad was funny, but dragging out the Soup Nazi felt a hoary ploy to me — “Seinfeld” was a long time ago now, it feels to me like it’s time to stop dredging it up. (I suppose Jerry Seinfeld doesn’t really need my advice on how to be a successful television star, though.)
The exercising dog was very well done (even if the Vader bit at the end felt tacked on). It made me laugh, which as a grump I don’t do that often. But I’m sticking with my Prius.
Elton John made me feel icky.
The vampire Audi commercial was the best!
Doritos flying baby. Avengers. Guy getting attacked by Cheetah.
Are we SURE that Detroit is recovering and making lots more cars? I haven’t heard that. But I do love Clint. No one mentioned the David Beckham ad. I liked it. Also I like PEPSI-ELTON and PEPSIMAX one, Seinfeld but wish it was w/o Leno. Kelly Clarkson did a great job, but I was bored to tears with Madonna. And M.I.A.- Same back at cha!!
The Dog Strikes Back VW spot was the best. Most of the commercials this year were barely memorable.
