Three modestly rated NBC Thursday comedy series got much-needed high-profile exposure at the Academy Awards tonight. Tina Fey of 30 Rock and Maya Rudolph of Up All Night were presenters. But Community co-star Jim Rash did one better, winning an Oscar. Along with director Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon, Rash won the adapted screenplay award for co-writing The Descendants. He showed off his comedic chops by mimicking category presenter Angelina Jolie’s awkward, model-like pose while accepting the award. The timing of Rash’s win couldn’t be better as NBC just announced that MIA Community will return to the schedule on March 15. The network will no doubt use Rash’s Academy Award in its promo campaign for the show’s relaunch. Stuck with low ratings and prolonged midseason hiatus, cult fave Community is facing long odds for renewal.
Backstage, Rash quipped that he’s going to use his Oscar as leverage in getting NBC brass to pick up the show for a fourth season. “I’m going to take this into their offices,” he said. “Perhaps this will help with Season 4.” In 1998, Helen Hunt’s Oscar win helped her NBC comedy series Mad About You, which had been declining in the ratings, get a renewal for one more season. It also helped Helen and her co-star Paul Reiser land fat paychecks: $1 million per episode, a $750,000 raise for both. Fourteen years later, the economics of the broadcast business are different as are NBC’s primetime fortunes, and an Oscar is unlikely to deliver salary boosts on a softly-rated show like Community. But it may help it clinch an oh-so-important fourth season renewal for producing studio Sony TV.

Good for Community and Rash. #sixseasonsandamovie
six seasons and a Movie!
Love the show, but the slot is horrendous.
If only it could be UAN, 30R/Comm, the office, Comm/30R… Anything BUT the 8pm vs the Big Bang Theory. I feel like there’s too much overlap between the two audiences of Comm and BBT (though I don’t care for the latter).
I agree – I had watched The Big Bang Theory before I discovered Community, but now I much prefer the latter! Big Bang has so much more exposure, and the audiences definitely overlap.
Big Bang has become a caricature of what Big Bang was in the 1st couple seasons. I’ve always watched Big Bang, I just started watching Community (watching 2.5 seasons this weekend). Not that it matters because I do not have a nielsen box but come March 15th I will watch Community and DVR Big Band
Please man, Community is dead. No matter if 8:00, 8:30 or 9:30, the ratings will suck but fortunately it’s going to get renewed for one last season to get it to 88 episodes.
Go Jim!!

She looked great, he looked like an idiot.
If idiot means super funny, then yes.
She looked like she needed to eat a hamburger. Those arms … yuck.
a hamburger, a burrito, 2 scoops of ice cream, and to top it off, some fat, cuz she is about to break on half!! yuck!!! sick of her…
If you’re into skeletons or that sort of thing…
I’m tired of people telling Angelina Jolie to “eat a hamburger”. Obviously if she didn’t think she looked GOOD, she wouldn’t be posing like that with a huge (and I would add, self-satisfied) smile on her face. And that’s the problem. She seems to have NO IDEA that she doesn’t look well. Which suggests that she has a serious body dysmorphia issue. No one can diagnose her just from a picture, of course, but to simply say “eat a burrito” is insensitive and offensive…
I’m sure they’r egoikng to tune into Community because of some bald guy, whom nobody ieentified as that guy in Community, and who is barely in Community.
Wrong on so many different levels.
some bald guy who nobody knew?…he won an Oscar…now everyone knows him, at least the people who will never know who YOU are! jealous much?
You fail.
Jim Rash is a terrific multi-talent, and ‘Community’ is a lot of fun. I only hope that the shows finds the sizeable audience it deserves this time.
Right, because someone winning an Oscar for writing 1/3 of a screenplay (so to speak) translates into watching them in a supporting role on a low rated tv show.
Well, it’s the best show on television.
I didn’t even know who he was. It wont help the ratings.
Are you kidding? America knows “Community” exists, they just don’t want to watch it (outside of a core group of extremely devoted fans). It’s also extremely over budget and insanely behind schedule at all times. And Rash is not among the top billed. This is nothing like Helen Hunt, co-lead of a show America had once loved who won an Oscar for a film they enjoyed. Nobody is going to think “I should watch that show with the supporting player who stood on stage because he co-wrote that film I didn’t see.” Nobody.
Um they are finished filming this year already so they are not behind. Also Dan Harmon goes out of his way to pay for extra things like using a song like Gravity to pay homage to one of his fans who used it in one of Community’s first fanvid.
Also America does not know Community exists because NBC does not promote it like the rest of the shows. Hardly anyone in my town knows what Community is.
They have a dedicated cast and crew who spend more hours than they have to in order to make this show. They don’t have to have writers all nighters, but they do because they love the show and believe in it.
Finally, Jim Rash was made a series regular this year. Sure he is not on screen as much as Joel McHale, but Jim Rash helps make the show for what it is and that pose he did would be something he would totally do on Community.
I don’t think Community gets much promotion at all… TBBT is advertised everywhere… Outside of America no one knows about Community… Community is only JUST getting discovered by my age group where I live… Everyone knows about the Office, TBBT and 2 and a half men (I hate that last show with a passion) but until very recently EVERY person I talked to either knew nothing and seen nothing or had a vague memory of an ad for it but didn’t know the name. Now everyone is spreading the news about it because of how amazing it is… Also it’s the kind of show that you watch in order because of it’s character growth being an integral part of the jokes and plots… It’s much harder to pick up an episode of Community in the 3rd season and go, “I get this!” to a person watching a season 3 episode of TBBT… If more people had watched it from the start it would have a bigger fanbase… But because the show is SO much better than when it first started the first episode s turn people off because they don’t give it a chance… Also it’s in a terrible timeslot…
Or it could have the opposite effect and make NBC say “Good, now go write more Oscar-winning screenplays, sucker!”
It’s all about hype. Just because people didn’t recognize Rash immediately last night, doesn’t mean that they won’t use the gold statue to brag (rightfully) and lure people in through the promos. Which is the point I got out of the article, at least.
“They” = NBC. Doh.
“The network will no doubt use Rash’s Academy Award in its promo campaign for the show’s relaunch.” –If so, it will be NBC’s first promo campaign for the show EVER! I do hope that Jim’s Oscar win will help the show get renewed! Even if the average person watching the Oscars didn’t know who he was maybe it will make the NBC brass appreciate what a gem they have in the brilliant actors on Community.
Just because the Oscar was for writing won’t affect how they advertise his acting role. Ben Affleck is “Academy Award Winner Ben Affleck” in every dramatic role he’s played since winning for Good Will Hunting’s screenplay. “Dean Pelton wore his silliest costume yet when he won an Oscar! Grats, Dean! Community returns March 15th.” Done.
Why is a 4th season “oh so important” for Sony? To get the number of episodes needed for syndication?
in a word: yes.
I don’t know who is Jim Rash but I think is great for someone to point out how ridiculous is some celebrities, like Angelina Jolie striking a fake pose just to show her skinny leg.
Um, pretty sure both were being goofy…Jolie was more or less laughing at herself on stage when she did it.
I’m not so sure about this – she struck the EXACT same pose during the red carpet photo scrum. I like her well enough, but I don’t think she spends too much time “laughing at herself.”
Loved the dress. Hated her posing in it…
I thought Jolie showed a playful sense of humor. She was obviously striking that pose on purpose for a laugh. Good for her.
Really? It didn’t seem obvious to me. It seemed totally not self-aware. She always plays up the sex appeal, why would anyone think she wasn’t this time?
Good for you being such a devoted fan. As they say “love is blind”.
They can advertise the show as starring “Oscar winner Jim Rash” all they want, but it won’t add a single viewer. There’s no name value there, and it’s not why viewers watch or don’t watch comedies.
No one else cares who he is, and most of the country didn’t pick up on him mocking Angie (mean spirited still isn’t funny, just mean, but he just looked like an odd guy from Hollywood). Some could eat more, sure. Some could eat less… so what.
Sorry honey but not only did most of the country pick up on his joke but so did most of the world. Get your head out of Angie’s behind and take a look at what is being posted on sites from all over the world. It is not helping Angie by posting such nonsense. It was was one of the best moments of the whole Oscar show. It doesn’t hurt to laugh once in a while.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put COMMUNITY back on the air!!!! And give it a better time slot, NBC… you idiots!!!!
Jim Rash is a scene stealer and one of the most talented comedians on Community. He was made a series regular this year for a reason, he adds a comedic balance to the show and always delivers and then some. I’m sure his Oscar win will bring in atleast 1 viewer.
Why would Academy Awards help out TV shows if the Emmys don’t help out TV shows?
TV shows like 30 Rock, Arrested Development, The Good Wife, Damages, Mike and Molly, Nurse Jackie have all had stars win Emmy awards and seen no ratings improvement. So how will an Oscar for writing help out a TV shows ratings? There really isn’t that much leverage.
The ratings may improve upon return because of fan campaigning and the show will probably get a season 4 for syndication/looking good, but this award will have nothing to do with it.
The biggest thing he Rash could do.. is convince Angie to make a cameo on the show. That would be priceless. As a fan of Ms. Jolie and Community.. I would so watch that show.
If I were Dan Harmon, I’d be working the win into the show. Replace the Luis Guzman statue with one of the dean, and bring Guzman back onto the show. Hilarity ensues!
Umm…OK. “One of our ACTORS won an award for WRITING a script that was mostly RE-WRITTEN by two people who had already won the same award before.”
Yeah I don’t think that really makes a great promo. But good luck. It’s a good show. And he is a good ACTOR.
