BREAKING: The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is concerned that, on Sunday, Sacha Baron Cohen will come to the Oscars and walk the Red Carpet. While ordinarily that would be fine since he’s a big international star, the Academy is dismayed that he’ll come dressed as the title character in his upcoming Paramount comedy The Dictator. That proposal has been floated with the Academy, and I’m told that everyone involved in the ceremony is adamantly against it on the grounds that it makes a mockery of what Hollywood considers its most prestigious event.
UPDATE: Sacha Baron Cohen BANNED From Oscars 2012
An Oscars spokesperson acknowledges the rumors but isn’t sure if it’s actually going to happen. Said the spokesperson: “We would hope that every studio knows that this is a bad idea. The Red Carpet is not about stunting.” I’ve heard his plan is to come dressed as The Dictator and then change into a tux and attend the Oscars. He’s not scheduled to present an award, but he could certainly arrive as part of the Paramount contingent. That studio has a Best Picture nominee in the Martin Scorsese-directed Hugo. Why the subterfuge? Because at 2007′s Oscars, Baron Cohen was asked to be a presenter and said he would do it only if he could be in character as Borat. And The Powers That Be said, “No way.”
But purists feel that the Oscars is no place for such in your face promotion. The Academy hasn’t even allowed movies to be advertised during the Oscarcast, until this year. While it will certainly be interesting to hear his answer when the Red Carpet’s TV hosts ask who he’s wearing, Baron Cohen would be pushing the envelope. Then again, since the change in producers was made, these Oscars have been incredibly sedate. The prospect of Baron Cohen’s Red Carpet walk is the closest thing to drama I’ve heard about this show.
This would not be Baron Cohen’s first time upstaging an awards show. To promote Bruno, he flew through the air at the MTV Movie Awards and landed with his crotch in the face of Eminem, who later admitted the stunt was rehearsed. And a trailer for The Dictator certainly was one of the raciest ever allowed by the MPAA during the Super Bowl, where Baron Cohen’s character was hilariously depicted running a competitive race while and leg-shooting rivals with a starter pistol as they got close to him.
I will add Paramount’s response when I get one from the studio. Below is the Super Bowl ad for The Dictator:

HA! Few know that the Sasha character, is his failed broadway show!! good call, on his multi-name reference!
“The Red Carpet is not about stunting.”
LOLLLL
Haha!
Right??
Using a major awards show that’s supposed to be about awarding the best of the previous year, to pimp your new material that nobody’s seen yet?
Come on Sasha, this isn’t the Grammys.
Probably one of the funniest trailers for a film ever. Whats even funnier is it borderlines real circumstance in many ways. Go Sasha!!!
I would love him to stick it to these phony illiterate Hollywood witches! GO SASHA!!! The clueless “stars” need a little reality check! This is it!!
his shtick has gotten old
His “stick” is the most uncomfortable body of work I’ve ever viewed, which is precisly the genius of it all.
If you are not squiming when you see it, it’s because it is about YOU.
“stick”??? I’m guessing you’re not a studio exec.
The truth is that these Hollywood cowards are afraid of offending muslims and their leaders if Cohen shows up looking like that.
I hope Cohen does it.
i normally wouldn’t defend the major hollywood studios, etc, but i really truly don’t think their “beef” with this is over offending anyone… their “beef” is that everyone will be talking about his character rather than the awards… and that’s a bunch of free promotion that paramount would get that seemingly wouldn’t be allowed to the other studios
in other words, it’s all about money
When people are being slaughtered by Dictators in Syria, Lybia, Yemen and regimes elsewhere the poor taste extends beyond “stunting”. How callous to mock people who are being killed and giving their lives for simple needs – food and freedom. I would hope SBC has enough class to respect what is happening in Homs to reconsider his promoting tactics…seeing people and children being killed by a dictator isn’t a laughing matter in any form.
Amen, brother. Too many here – meaning Deadline, and the USA – seem to think the rest of the world exists primarily to provide material for fiction features, docs, and jokes. A little sensitivity. A little humility. The world – including Our Town – would be a better place.
Go ahead…snark away.
You’re on Deadline, not Huffpo.
Piss Off
I bet you are the life of the party. Seriously get over yourself…what a downer.
Was that your reaction when Brett Ratner was criticized for using the word “fag”, that the critics should just get over themselves and not be such downers? The mini-holocaust happening in Syria is a lot more significant than some douchey director saying that “rehearsing is for fags” and yet that controversy caused such a ruckus that he was booted from producing the show.
Personally I think The Dictator is okay because it brings attention to the violence and suffering of the Arab middle east if only through satire. Which is better than trivial outrage over celebrity misbehavior that fills the media.
did you know NATO (us) bombs into his compound killed two of Gadhafy’s grandsons, they were 10 and 12 years old. Are you good with that? just asking.
he got a write up here so even if he doesn’t pull this stunt he’s getting press.
of course they won’t let him do that. the home audience would actually enjoy it. why throw them off?
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson presented at the Oscars dressed as their characters from Starsky & Hutch. Why is this now a problem for the Academy when Sasha is only be dressed like that on the red carpet?
Not to mention Anne Hathaway and James Franco cross-dressing last year or Ben Stiller dressed up as Joaquin Phoenix in ’09…
Or WIll Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black hitting on Helen Mirren.
So the red carpet is no place for antics, but on stage, during the actual show, is TOTALLY OK for gags.
Is it the Oscars? And Billy Crystal hosting? Don’t give a rat’s behind about the pictures or rhe actors, I’ll watch to see Billy C and it would be great to have Borat. Just the 2 of them. Need some funny stuff and it would save millions to help the strugling Americans and their families. And I wonder how many will wear depends. It’ll be a long time.
“… it would save millions to help strugling Americans and their families.”
What a completely ignorant statement. The Oscars actually generates quite a bit of income for quite a lot of companies and people dependent on awards season in LA.
Yeah, it sure would be a shame to have some cheap promotional stunt upstage the Oscars and its host Billy Crystal….who once opened an Oscars broadcast by riding a horse onstage to promote “City Slickers 2.” Gotta love those Academy blowhards.
This is the same academy that did not give best picture nominations to raunchy comedies like the Hangover or this year’s Bridesmaids (which didn’t deserve it, but comedy should be represented).
I think it might be a good idea for the show but it kinda does make a mockery of the red carpet.
“(which didn’t deserve it, but comedy should be represented)”… Ummm… so what do you supposed they do?
Let Sasha be Sasha. Geez, the truth is the Academy’s red carpet has long been a roll out of walk-by political shots and/or film plugs. Mr. Cohen should be allowed to fashion his.
It breaks my heart that one of quite a few awards shows where millionaires go to pat themselves on the back after already being awarded their millions might be sullied by a SBC stunt. I just… I can’t…. I can’t bear it.
um, isn’t the whole POINT to market and encourage movie ticket sales. Do it, SBC–the red carpet has been a mockery for YEARS.
No sense of humor out there. He might be the only entertaining thing that happens all night. I say let him host as the Dictator. It would be the first time I watched this dopey show.
How quickly people forget Trey Stone & Matt Parker in their dresses.
One of the best red carpet moments in history. Mocking J-Lo and Gwen…priceless.
SBC needs to go away until it shoots the Freddy Mercury film. He hasn’t been even mildly amusing in years now.
I’m hoping that movie happens. I think he would be an awesome Freddy Mercury
Fleming on Cohen; :rimshot:
Must be fun being one of the Pharaoh’s (exempt from criticism) covenant. Niiiiice! You’d be pinched in Paris for declaring such insults. Paradoxical isn’t it?
Who cares about a bunch of people who gives awards to themselves? The Oscars are a joke so he should be able to be an ass if he wants, it fits the mold in the first place…
People still watch these award shows? And the promoters of these award shows think they carry dignity still?? Hah, wow.
Every year some stars try to use the Oscars to promote there political stance, and use the Oscars as there own personal soap box. At least this would be an honest in your face joke, and it would be entertaning.
don’t forget that he went in character as Bruno to the MTV Movie Awards in ’09 in that planned stunt w/ Eminem.
For his past films he has spent extensive amounts of time in character. I don’t see the problem with this. They are going to tell people how to dress
And please with the idea that the oscars are serious and prestigious. It is an award show for movies not the Nobel peace prize.
