Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage
At tonight’s PaleyFest panel on Two And A Half Men, co-creators/executive producers Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and star Ashton Kutcher wouldn’t give a straight answer as to whether Kutcher will be back next season. Kutcher has been in talks for a new deal, which would seal the series’ renewal for a tenth season. “Here’s the thing, I don’t think that the show’s been picked up for another year,” Kutcher told moderator Michael Schneider of TV Guide Magazine. “I’m absolutely adoring the time that I’m having, but I haven’t heard from the powers that be yet, so I don’t know.”
Lorre also was coy, saying the decision “is above my pay grade.” On the renewal front, “It’s unusual when they cancel a show that’s in the Top 10. I think there’s hope,” he said but indicated that Men will only return with Kutcher on board. “I think reinventing the show going forward, everybody has to sign back up,” he said.
If Two And Half Men comes back, Lorre and Aronsohn did confirm that Courtney Thorne-Smith and Judy Greer, who portray the girlfriend/ex-wife of Jon Cryer’s Alan Harper and Kutcher’s man-child character Walden Schmidt, respectively, will continue to be part of the show. Lorre said the show has outgrown “the bimbo of the week” of Charlie Sheen era and is now about relationships. The producers also announced that Angus T. Jones’ slow-witted charmer Jake will graduate from high school this season, but no guarantees of college. The panelists not confirm whether Holland Taylor’s Evelyn Harper would continue this season’s surprise budding lesbian relationship with Jean (Georgia Engel), the sweet widowed mother of Courtney Thorne-Smith’s character. Taylor quipped that Engel didn’t know the story line when she signed on but “when we kissed, she got the drift. ”
Most members of the panel—which included Lorre, Aronsohn, Cryer, Taylor, Jones and Conchata Ferrell – said they were surprised and gratified that the show had succeeded in its ninth season after the noisy departure of Sheen. “This is a miracle that we’re here – thank you for watching the show,” Lorre told the crowd. “A year ago, we thought the show was over.” Added Cryer, “What surprised me was that it retained its fan base. It’s such a joy to continue doing this guy.” He added he thought his character had suffered every possible humiliation in the first 8 seasons but “oh no, I hadn’t—they lit my crotch on fire” in Season 9.
Surprisingly, the audience Q&A portion did not feature a single reference to Sheen but included a question that elicited a stronger commitment from Kutcher to staying on Men. He was asked if there were any actors out there he always wanted to work with. “I’ve been really lucky in my career to work with unbelievable people, I’ve learned something from almost everyone I’ve worked with, “ he said. “It’s a weird bunch of people, actors – we’re creeps. We are like some kooky sons of bitches. For me, it’s really the magic of getting to know someone you’re working with. And right now, I want to work with these guys.”

Kill. This. Terrible. Show.
I cannot get into the new TWO AND A HALF MEN !! I have tried to watch it but it is not the same ! I do not like it!! I only watch the old reruns with Charie Sheen. The old reruns are priceless!! They were a great team !! It will never be as good !
I agree. It is overly raunchy and unwatchable.
I am loving the new two and a half men…its hilarious. Never used to like the old one anyway. And if I did watch the old ones it was only because of Jon Cryer. Bring on season 10. And as for Sheen he killed Charlie Harper all by himself…so stop whining!
Watched about 4 shows without Charlie Sheen and had to force myself to watch the last 2. Couldnt do anymore, the show is just bad. And not in the ‘Michael Jackson’ Bad, i’m talking stinky bad.
this show is a dude. the networks should pull the plug and let it die gracefully. ashton kutcher’s character is boring. and it’s a clear sign that a show is running out of ideas when the writers have to create an alternative relationship.
it’s a really nice cast but the show really stinks now. and i’ve been watching every episode. it’s the sadist in me. but i do have to say it’s not as wretched as it was in the first half of the season. now it’s just bland and unfunny. that was sort of a compliment
It is not meant to be the same as the old Two and a Half Men, and I do agree it doesn’t seem to be as funny as the old one, but maybe it takes a season or two for the writers to improve it.
yeah right, let’s wait i don’t know one, two, three, ten years until it becomes funny whereas FUNNY shows are cancelled..whatever and with Ashton Kutcher it will NEVER be funny and i liked That’s 70 show but Hyde and Fez were the funny ones NOT himbo Kelso !
Please just end it..It is beyond terrible.
So they confirmed that Lyndsey and Bridget would continue to appear, but not a mention of Zoey? Thank god they haven’t completely shut the door on her leaving the show before the season’s end.
She has been one of the major problems this season. The relationship came out of almost no where, when it had been clearly established that Walden was never going to stop being in love with Bridget and would do anything to get her back.
The first nine episodes (before Zoey appeared) were actually decent.
Please don’t renew this dismal horrible show. Anything with Ashton Kutcher in it is sure to bomb. What a loser. Charlie Sheen made the show.
” Lorre said the show has outgrown “the bimbo of the week” of Charlie Sheen era…”
He actually admitted part of the formula was to include a weekly “bimbo” ??
Someone told me the working title for the series was “Two & a Half Men and a Whore” but I told them they were crazy…guess that’s egg on my face.
Stay classy, Chuck Lorre.
Ted McGinley is available.
2.5 Men has become the District 12 of television shows – Despised, abused but still victorious in the ratings. Can someone please tell me how this much hated show is still such a ratings champ and would CBS actually kill it off just based on its low quality?
They will ride this poor sick pony until it drops dead … too much money would be left on the table to cancel it now.
This show is painful. But there are plenty of dimwitted Americans who apparently like this kind of humor.
This show is responsible for lowering the television sitcom comedy bar and has resulted in other lackluster “hits” With one dimensional alleged characters and paint by numbers alleged ‘writing’. Yes I’m referring to that other Shouldn’t Be A Hit show The Big Bang Theory.
CBS does not = Comedy.
It honestly baffles me that this show, actually any show Chuck Lorre produces, has any success whatsoever.
The show has a different feel with Ashton. Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, bite the bullet and bring back Charlie. (Don’t worry about explaining how Charlie came back from the dead, any explanation will do — it’s only a TV show.)
My family and friends have stopped watching Two and a Half Men. It is really an awful show now. They made these wonderful actors low lives and it is so sad because we loved the whole cast before Ashton Kutcher took over Charlie Sheens’ role. Hope that it will not be renewed for another season. We rather watch the Charlie Sheen old episodes then this train wreck of a show.
I agree I think they should put two and half men in the grave without Charlie Sheen it NOT WINNING
The show is not the same, and not just because Kutcher replaced Sheen. There are significnatly diminshed roles for the strong supporting cast, including Rose, Evelyn, even Jake. And even the set has been re-dressed (poorly, by any interior design standard).
So how to reinvigorate the show? Remember that money talks above all else. If I were Lorre, I’d put aside my disagreements with Sheen and write him back into the final episode of this season. Recall that when he supposedly killed off the Charlie character, there was a closed coffin. It doesn’t take a creatvie genius to come up with a plot line that invovles Rose drugging and dumping Charlie soemwhere in Europe, not just getting smashed by a subway train.
Teh ratings for such an episode would be the best of this season and might even set up an inetresting tenth season story arc – Walden vs. Charlie.
Hey it could happen. “Dallas” wrote out an entire season as a dream sequence.
This is a classic example of what happens when you allow emotions to be the real star of the show with business decisions. Lorre may be too egotistical to recognize that he missed the mark and sabotaged himself–and the show instead of Sheen. Did he really think that Charlie wouldn’t land on his feet after all the media hype? The final nail in the coffin was to “kill” Charlie off (really??) rather than being off doing a movie or something, then introduce Ashton’s character as being their brother–instead of not being related. I think a major factor in the chemistry of the characters and the show is that the men were related. When they took that away, they killed the show. Instead of two brothers living together with a child, you have this man and his son freeloading off this man they hardly knew. That doesn’t happen too often.
pick a show that has lost such a key character and not suffered at minimum, a short term fall-off. i’m not a prior fan of ashton kutcher, but his character is developing and it would be unfair to not allow the cast time to grow their relationships
