Talk about thinking ahead. With most pilots of this development cycle still gearing up for production, ABC has already bought a project that will be in consideration for the next one. Drama Infection was written on spec by Soo Hugh (The River). It was developed by Aaron Kaplan who will serve as an executive producer, with ABC Studios coming on board to produce. In the vein of Contagion, Infection chronicles a deadly pandemic ravaging the nation. A desperate President orders a border that divides the nation to halt the spread of the virus. Now, five years later, survivors on both sides fight to bring the country back together. Indie producer Kaplan has successfully taken the spec route for three of his four broadcast pilot orders this season — comedies Isabel and Daddy’s Girls at NBC and the Dan Fogelman half-hour at ABC. The deal for Infection expands Kaplan’s relationship with ABC where he has two pilots, Dan Fogelman and The Manzanis, and a series, GCB. Hugh is with WME.

Go KAP!
I really hope the Contagion writer sues.
Yay, spec sales!!!!!
I hope the writing is better for this one than it is for The River. Oy vey
Kaplan Vs. Dixon
Another Aaron Kaplan pilot that wont get picked up! Awesome!
Wake me up when Kaplan sells something that isn’t canceled after one season.
ABC, after the River, The Nine, Flashforward, V… at what point do you get that event shows DON’T WORK.
ABC’s lame attempt to do a “Walking Dead” type show.
Virus/Survivors blah, blah, blah.
Well, now they know the wrong way to do it (eg, The River). Bad luck to show The River’s lame “zombies” episode the same weak The Walking Dead pulled a real showstopper. Just don’t hire anyone associated with The River…oops…
Once Upon a Time is an “event” series, is it not? Big, epic ongoing story with a dozen interrelating characters…
Event series do work. Trouble is, nobody knows which ones till they try. When I first heard about OUAT, my first thought was, who the hell wants to see a show about fairy tales?
GCB is dreadful. ‘Nuff said.
Yet another middle-aged white guy with a writing deal.
Awesome. Maybe this means I can get my specs “Famine” and “Genocide” off the ground!
The events in this plot seem very similar to Max Brooks’ “World War Z” to me.
Except without the zombies. Which is a rather large difference. I mean, it would be to me if I were there! I’d prefer the non-zombie reality, please.
