You would think that’s why society invented money, but A&E is doing a reality series about the “thriving subculture of cashless trading.” Barter Kings, which has been picked up for 13 half-hour episodes to premiere this summer, features teams of entrepreneurs pursuing items they want by trading other items that they currently own without the use of cash. The series is produced by Brownstone Entertainment, with Drew Brown, Bob Gillan and James Flint executive producing.

this has been pitched a zillion times since 2005. I’m sure a lot of people are gonna be pissed to see someone finally sell it. I for one am very curious to see how sustainable the series concept is…
As sustainable as Hillbilly Handfishin’, Pawn Stars, Toddlers and Tiaras, and all the rest of the crap that ‘meercans watch.
I am sure that the IRS will be avid viewers of this program.
YEAH!!!!!
This show already has a built-in audience. IRS agents monitoring income reporting compliance.
Seems like perfect timing to me. Watching major mainstream tv today in DC. Reporter is interviewing the “man on the street” asking if he could go without cash for a day. So I guess we’re supposed to start planning on how we might do that. Voila! Instant audience.
JD said it best
So is A&E gonna pony up cash for the fines the IRS is gonna inflict upon these bartering “entrepeneurs”?
The IRS is very interested in Barter.
I would not want my trades on TV.
A friend of mine had been working on the exact same premise and pitched it to Drew Brown about a year ago. Funny how crocked some people can be sometimes…
Interesting. So I guess you’re saying your friend stole the idea from this webisode that aired in Dec. 2010?
This show gets canceled after the first IRS audit of one of the traders. The rest will back out (assuming they can get enough to have a show) and the show dies.
