EXCLUSIVE: Alcon Entertainment has acquired an untitled screenplay written by newcomer Jack Paglen that will mark the feature directorial debut of Wally Pfister, the Oscar-winning cinematographer whose credits include Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Moneyball. The deal was made by Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, who’ll start pre-production immediately for an early fall shoot.
The logline is being kept under wraps, but the screenplay was developed by Annie Marter and Straight Up Films, whose principals include Marisa Polvino, Kate Cohen and Regency Boies. Polvino, Cohen and Marter will produce along with Johnson and Kosove. Boies will co-produce.
“We have been talking to Wally about making his directorial debut with Alcon for over a decade since we all worked together on Insomnia,” Johnson and Kosove said in a statement. “Wally is truly one of the most talented artists with whom we have ever collaborated. To now have the opportunity to work with Wally as a director on this truly remarkable project, is a company highlight for Alcon Entertainment.”
Pfister won his Oscar for Inception, one of seven films he has made with director Chris Nolan, starting with Memento. While this is his first feature, Pfister has directed commercials for several years and gained notice for his powerful work on PSAs for The Montana Meth Project, alongside directors Darren Aronofsky, Tony Kaye, and Alejandro Inarritu.
Pfister and Paglen are repped by ICM.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Marter and Paglen are major rising stars. Pfister is a natural filmmaker. CAN’T WAIT for this movie.
Don’t wonder:
Even german cineasts wait for this film!
Awesome! If his cinematography is any indication, he could become a great director. It’s also neat when directors do their own cinematography (a la Soderbergh). Best of luck to him!
Wally is awesome!
Incredibly talented man, anticipating this with great enthusiasm.
Wally is a talented dop.
Best of luck directing.
I’m so excited about DKR. It’s sick.
Darn it I hate when they keep the logline under wraps.
They should have said it’s “Blade Runner meets Batman”
Congratulations Wally! This is terrific!
Wally Pfister is an amazing Cinematographer.
That said, excellent Cinematographers do not necessarily make for successful Directors.
Nonetheless, I hope Mr. Pfister well.
Good luck!
He will do just fine.
This guy is mad talented. His Montana Meth spots are top notch. It’ll be interesting to see what what he does for sure.
Well deserved! Congratulations (again), Wally.
It all sounds very interesting and the choice of a first time scribe please me as well, however….
Look for this to sit in development hell at Alcon as they endlessly squabble over the budget in which time Pfister will have moved on and directed a film for Warner Bros.
Always works out well. For example, Jan de Bont and Barry Sonnenfeld.
Fantastic…….can’t wait for his stunning debut
Wally is a class act. What a great move for him!
Sounds terrific! Pfister should do well , especially with some very talented and hard working people backing him up, like Polvino and Marter.
This is wild! Wally’s going to be phenomenal; no doubt. Plus Polvino, Cohen, Boies all partnered on one project? That’s a powerhouse trio. Is Straight Up Films doing anything else right now? They’ve made my watch-list.
Way to go Jack!! So happy for you! So well deserved! Looks like we’re gonna have to raise the blinds at our next poker night.
Wow! Straight-Up Films knocking it out of the park. Go Polvino!
So refreshing to see 1 story without any negative comments. He’s an incredible DP, and he’s had the opportunity to study under one of the best directors around in Nolan.
I agree that it’s refreshing to see a post without bitchy comments.
Congratulations Wally, The best of luck!
