EXCLUSIVE: Hellcats star Aly Michalka has departed Fox’s single-camera comedy pilot Rebounding after her character has been reworked post-table read. The 20th TV project, written/executive produced by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, executive produced by Steve Levitan and directed by Jason Winer, is an uplifting comedy about Danny (Will Forte), a man recovering from the death of his fiancé with the help of the idiots on his pickup basketball team. Michalka was cast as Taryn, the smoking-hot younger girlfriend of one of Danny’s friends, Dave, played by Hayes MacArthur. The Taryn character has now been reconceived, with the revamp including aging her up by a decade to Dave’s age. This is the third comedy pilot where recasting was done when characters were reworked after the table read, following similar moves on CBS’ Partners and ABC’s Mandy Moore project.

Good luck finding someone as hot and talented as Aly Michalka! They made a huge mistake recasting her!
Yeah cuz nobody’s smokin’ hot anymore when they hit 32. Push comes to shove, they could always cast his real life wife, Ali Larter, although they might prefer to get around age 30. It either came off creepy or the tone was just not quite right due to Aly Michalka’s age. It’s not her fault, and I doubt there was any blaming. Must be hard losing it after table read, but she’ll be fine. Some “they’ll be sorry!” missive is really wasted here. I’m sure they already were when they made the decision to recast. You do what’s best for the show. It’s not like they’re bringing in another 22yo.
I dont know what your smoking but I know plenty of hot girls in their 30s even 40s everone is different like Aly Im sure when shes 32 shes gonna be still if not even more smoking but thats just my opinion & Im sure she really didnt want it anyway hahaha kick her off she deserves alot more like major Hollywood roles not a has been show keep your head up Aly dont let noone bring you down infact she can sit in the studio forever & sell records with her sister 78violet most cant do that all she needs is the right people working for her & with her for her not them
That is SO stupid. They shouldn’t have told Aly she had it if they recast her.
Maybe if we didn’t have this stupid orgiastic pilot season process this kind of baloney wouldn’t happen as much and casting would be given the time and care these shows require to be as good as they can be.
I look forward to the day an exec sits down in his new job, in his new office, and at 10am is informed that his job is being “reworked”. There are some things you have to get right first time, then stick to. This can not become common practice.
Cancelled after 3 episodes, so they did her a favor. There is still plenty of time for her to find other work.
I, too, think this is actually good news for Aly. She should be doing movies and/or another lead role on a series, and/or finally finishing that album with her sister.
The key part of the story is it happened AFTER the table read so you can save your ‘talented’ arguments for Aly. She was terrible on Wildcats and is better suited for a guest spot as a ‘hot chick’ on some tween ABC Famiy or Nicheloden show.
First of all Aly has been nominated for awards for almost every TV show and movie she has ever been in. Secondly, if you are going to comment, at least get your facts straight. Her show was called “Hellcats”, not “Wildcats”.
The fact that this replacement proccess is happening as often as it has been as of late speaks more to the casting teams behind these pilots than it does the talent of the actors involved.
At this point, an actor can’t be sure they’ll be part of a new series until it actually begins to air. After you’re initially cast, they could replace you after the table read, they could replace you after filming the pilot, or they can replace you once the show is ordered to series. All three are happening more and more.
Happy for Aly! She’s an awesome actress and singers! Now she have the time for the new album with he sister AJ’. Aly you inspire my life! Such a role model!

Smells like the table read didn’t go so well concerning Michalka, so they altered the girlfriend character just enough so that they couldn’t use her any longer. Read-between-the-lines way of saying we want someone with a little more chops.
That, or having her read as the girlfriend of a guy a couple years shy of Old-Enough-To-Be-Her-Father was a lot more ridiculous in reality than it sounded on paper. Considering making the gf character a decade older was the only real change that was made, you can’t really put this off on Michalka. She’s young, she looks young, and she plays young, so it’s not really surprising ABC decided to not go with a casting situation that would have given off a creepy/ridiculous vibe to their family demo.

Just a quick comment for Regan – just remember, as with all casting (but especially with pilots) there are dozens of people who have to sign off on the actor… the casting directors bring in what the writer/director/producers/studio/network envision AND ALL THESE PEOPLE have to agree on the actor. Personally I think there’s too many cooks in the kitchen – leaving the actors with a bad taste in their mouth.
Levittan knows what he’s doing. The guy has a track record. If he replaced her it was to make the show better, and probably wasn’t a good fit for her anyway. Wait and see, it will be another hit for Steve and she will be forgotten.
