Angela Bassett and Nip/Tuck alum Julian McMahon are in final negotiations to co-star in Fox’s untitled Karyn Usher drama pilot. Written by Usher and directed by Brett Ratner, the project centers on Jane Forsythe (Saxon Sharbino), the orphaned 14-year-old daughter of a CIA operative who encounters a mysterious rogue agent (McMahon) who serves as her surrogate father and professional mentor in the spy world. Bassett will play the calculating and political director of the CIA who takes Jane under her wing. Bassett, repped by Gersh and Lighthouse Entertainment, just finished a critically praised run on Broadway in The Mountaintop opposite Samuel L. Jackson. For McMahon, repped by WME and ROAR, this is the first TV role since his seven-year stint on FX’s Nip/Tuck. The Karyn Usher pilot is produced by 20th Century Fox TV and 21 Laps/Adelstein.

First there was that Dragon Tattoo rip-off that was thankfully euthanized.
Now there’s this shamelessly derivative dreck? It’s Alias meets Leon meets Nikita meets “Every Female Spy-Assassin Idea Ever.”
Is it that lame, tasteless “creative execs” and agents only peddle and “get” the hackneyed, threadbare, familiar ideas? How many wasted millions of dollars does the TV development biz generate annually? Between failed pilot scripts and failed pilots and quickly cancelled series… what a broken system.
Sure, many ideas are just repackaged and recycled prior ideas– human civilization has been telling stories to entertain ourselves for some time now– but for God’s sake be a little fresher than this.
Ultimately the blame falls on the loser suits who hear these ideas, then throw money at them to make them real– real red ink.
You can’t rip-off multiple shows. All you did was prove that this was an overused storyline but it is not a rip-off of anything
Wow — this just got really interesting.
Decent casting, but I liked this more when it was HANNA.
btw, anyone who liked Hanna is a moron. Easily one of the more retarded films of the last two years… Chemical Brothers soundtrack or not.
I love statements that essentially declare all “people” who do not share your taste is an idiot.
The fact that you would call anyone an idiot for not having the same likes and dislikes as yourself is so much MORE the definition of an idiot.
Congratulations on living in your narrow scope, limited version of a life.
Please do not procreate. What you pass on will only create another narrow scoped person like yourself.
Hanna was a good movie, but I don’t think someone who did not like it is an idiot.
I already did! And my kids REALLY hate the movie too! Just a couple o’ chips off the ol’ block huh… but yep, movie still sucks. One of the very few flix we walked out of the theater on and asked for our $ back. No need giving charity to bad story.
I just finally watched Hanna yesterday for the first time. I had a perpetual cringe on my face and a slack jaw. I kept thinking this was a joke, couldn’t be the right movie. But all the players were right, and the story vaguely resembled a pretty decent script I remember reading a couple years ago. But hot damn — Edward Sharpie is right. That movie was just… OFF. So many bad sequences. Like the director was doing some teenage fanboy, half attempt to mimic the oddities of Kubrick with all kinds of bizarre location and shooting choices. Come on! That facility escape scene has to be one of the worst sequences in any movie of the last ten years. And the Grimm house stuff and.. and.. and… It was awful through and through.
I sadly agree.
I really liked Hanna and agree this sounds like a ripoff. But Angela Bassett is fabulous so I look forward to whatever she does with the Cate Blanchett character.
I love Julian and have missed him on TV so much. Hope the deal goes through and the pilot gets picked up!
To all you haters, get back to Nikita or whatever Vampire tit you’re sucking on this week. Or, get out and play a sport, meet a girl or just do something. You’re only go live once, Troll.
Yes.
All I have to say is yes.
“Phoebe, I really HAVE changed” “That whole demon thing-in the past”
Sounds interesting up until Julian McMahon – Poor casting. There are so many reasons why he’ll never be a movie star.
I love Angela Bassett and whatever she does she is always brilliant and Julian McMahon is excellent. This is a series that I am excited to watch. I saw Bassett on Broadway in The Mountaintop and she gave a performance that should garner her The Tony.
This actually sounds like a great combo Angela and Julian. Fox was smart to be in business with this cast. I will see anything Angela Bassett is in. To the writers and director please make this about character. Brett it is not a popcorn movie. Make this suspenseful and intriguing.
Wow, I hope Julian ROCKS THAT ASCOT in the series! Stylin’!
Karyn Usher and Angela Bassett = a perfect combination. What Karyn did for “Prison Break,” she will do again here. Best wishes.
Am I the only one who noticed Ratner is directing? DOA.
All these “young girl spy” came from a series of books called “Fearless” by by Francine Pascal back in the 90′s
And BTW: the Hunger Games is a rip from a Japanese film called “Battle Royal”
Angela will add grace to what ever she does.
Love Angela since “Tina” and “Vampire in Brooklyn”.. She always add grace to her roles.
Julian is great too..
For a FOX tv series, it look interesting.. (the best on their list is arguably the Kevin Williamson’s serial killer one)
I am extremely excited to watch Julian do tv series again. For sure this will be a big hit to mention that Angela B. is in the lead cast, too. Julian is my ultimate crush and my husband knows about my craziness over Julian. Zel frm Cebu, Philippines
