Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage.
At tonight’s PaleyFest panel on Fox’s forensic series Bones, creator/executive producer Hart Hanson and executive producer Stephen Nathan could not reassure fans that the series, now in its seventh season, will definitely make it to a Season 8, or a Season 9. But Hanson was bold enough to say he believes the show will be back. “There’s always the business side between the studio and the network, and they have to figure our license fees and things,” Hanson said. “But, I hate to say this, in many, many ways, Bones is Fox’s most successful hour-long scripted drama. I’m pretty confident that we’ll be back for Seasons 8 and 9, yeah.” Anticipating a Season 8, the producers said Bones would end Season 7 with a cliffhanger although they would not reveal details. “There will be a large cliff that people will be hanging from,” Nathan deadpanned. “It’ll change the course, certainly the beginning, of season 8.”
The producers, appearing on the panel, hosted by TVLine’s Michael Ausiello, with star/executive producer Emily Deschanel and cast members David Boreanaz (also a producer and four-time director of the show), Michaela Conlin and John Francis Daley, also teased some plot points that might be revealed in Seasons 8 and 9, including the real name of Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin). “We’ll make a story about it,” Hanson said. “[Viewers] really want to know what Angela’s name is, and they want to know what’s on page 187.” When asked whether viewers could expect a wedding for Deschanel and Boreanaz’ characters — who become parents this season — before the series ends, Nathan quipped: “If they ever get married, we’ll see a wedding.” He also said of the birth of their baby in the series: “It’s still Bones — we don’t want to give the impression we’re doing Parenthood. There will still be someone who is dead and revolting, and they will try to figure out who did it. They will have to figure out how to deal with this baby while they deal with these murders.”
Along with the 13 episodes that complete this season’s story arc, the producers confirmed they have produced 4 extra episodes that are not part of the arc but “we don’t know where they are going to be” on the season schedule. Near the end of the session, someone from the audience asked how the producers felt about having the series moved to Monday nights, out of its plum Thursday slot following American Idol. “Good. I know we’re supposed to be upset,” Hanson said. “Monday nights are very, very good for us. We’ve always wanted to be with House. It’s a good match for us. We’re fine with it.”

Given the loss of House, along with how the other dramas on Fox are performing I’m quite confident of its future as well.
I’m looking forward to the return of the show in April, especially since I have nothing to watch on Mondays after bailing on Smash.
House ending,Terra Nova cancelled,Finder Floundering,Alcatrash? Seriously-Bones WILL BE returning.
Bring back Pelant! Best villain of series! Creepy as Hell. And smart as F–k. What will he do next?
If Bones is renewed-it will be because all the other Fox dramas are failing. When Bones returns in April- I don’t think I’ll be watching anymore. This whole baby type storyline,or,whatever is a huge turnoff for me-especially on this type of show. I understand Emily was pregnant in real-life,but, I don’t watch Bones for this baby story-I watch it for the cases. This baby storyline is changing this show too much. I don’t think it’s just me-a number of fans will be turned off by this. In most cases:when you introduce a baby into a successful show-it changes the dynamic of the show . The “chemistry”between the two of them won’t feel the same. At least not for me.
I can’t wait for you to go Because you obviosly have not watched The last few episodes which gives us the brilliant storyline. Kudoes to the cast and emmys all around.
good lord, someone please put this “show” out of it’s misery already. i’ve seen brick walls with more depth and character.
What are you talking about? Can’t be the popular and best show on TV if it is heading in the wrong direction. Go Away!!!
I really need to have Bones back, the cloest thing as a replacement is The Finder but I still need the Bones fix each and every week and we need to know what the baby was. Just leaving us with a house to purchase on the last session was not good enough. Don’t leave us out in the cold.
For all these people making negative comments about Bones, seriously, this show is one of the best crime drama there is, the cast are amazing, the storyline is mind blowing, it would be aq crime if there is no season 8 or 9. If the makers/producers want to listen to the genuine fans of the show, please you continue with incredible show. !!!!!!!!
Actually, it’s not. By the time you get through all the interpersonal drama to the resolution of “who dun’it,” you pretty much don’t care anymore. The CSI’s have never done much for me, but at least they put the mystery of the week first, and the drama second.
For the perfect blend of both, watch Castle.
Just bc ED was pregnant didn’t mean they had to go down this road. It’s clear from the Parenthood comparison, they know they’re headed for a potential mess. Babies should not been seen or heard on shows like Bones.
What show have you been watching? We loyal fans have watched this logical progression. Get your head out of the mud. This is brilliant!!!!
This is the best show!! I can’t wait for it to come back on. I think that Bones having a baby with Booth was a great storyline. Angela and Hodges have a child and it isn’t like they show the baby in every episode. I love this show. You can have the murders and crime fighting and then still see the “personal lives” of the characters. It is great!!
I hope you are aware that David Boreanaz was the first star/producer/director on “Bones.” I hope Ms. Deschanel will have the chance to add on director at some point. David Boreanaz has shown he is multi-talented as an actor, producer, and director. The entire cast is exceptionally talented in so many areas. Congrats to John Francis Daley as well for his movie writing credits. Much success as well for TJ Thyne’s Theatre Junkies. What a multi-talented group!!!
Yay, more mediocre TV with wooden performances and improbably laughable storylines! Fox should bring back “Justice” and “Standoff” while they’re at it.
I can see the same nanny for both couples, great way to add a new character.
Even if it is terrible, it will be back!
So he said nothing about The Finder? Huh.. interesting, considering that’s all he could blabber about this time last year. He’s taking the same “ignore it, and it may as well never happened” approach my three year old takes to the marker scribbles she left on the hallway wall this morning.
I find it very difficult to understand the comments describing Bones as lacking in either the crime stories or character depth departments. Regardless of whether or not one feels that the new story developments concerning the main characters’ romantic relationship and child are negatively affecting the overall feel of the show, Bones (the show) is remarkably good at its attention to accuracy, detail, character development, etc. It not only takes on incredibly difficult material in regards to the science involved but its done a great job maneuvering the complexities of having so many very different and conflicting personalities (especially Brennan’s; to make that personality endearing shouldn’t be underestimated). Say what you want about personal preferences but the stories, characters, and science of Bones is anything but lacking.
I’ve never commented on a show before but Bones is fabulous! Whoever said a baby would ruin the show and negate the “chemistry” between Brennan and Booth must be the kind of person who thinks having a baby in real life ruins a relationship or marriage! It only solidifies relationships that are already solid and “hot” as is obvious in this relationship. I can see a season 8 and 9 and more with additional depth added to the storyline and characters as they develop with parenthood added to their careers as top sleuthing forensic scientist and FBI agent. Go for it, FOX network. I’ll watch Bones with baited breath…… Can’t wait!
DONT SAY THAT IT’S THE BEST SHOW EVER
I hope it does return for another season. But, if it does I also hope the writing is a little better. This past season had the feel of a last season where there just didn’t seem to be any real story lines that grab you. I don’t have anything against the baby story line a some have but the over writing just doesn’t seem to be there like it used to.
Myself, and all my friends really enjoy “Bones”!! So, keep up the good work. The only complaint I would have is you need to have them get married… I know that you can still keep the energy (“heat”), going between them as the writers have been good at that. Having been with my husband for 37 years with plenty of heat, before he made me a widow, I can attest to that. Please don’t be party to discouraging marriage between two people, who obviously love and respect each other and each other’s jobs, for the sake of ratings. Because, if you do you will lose… This is what more writers need to say on the tv shows we so enjoy, as a natural progression, (not more living together-without marriage) to help get this country back on a healthy & positive track. Encourage the ethical and the good in people while they do their super intelligent & important jobs!! Kudo’s to your writer’s!!
I have watched Bones since the day it started and in the off seasons, recorded and rewatched the episodes to the point that I know them all. I am having “Bones withdrawals” and I am waiting for season 8 to start. This is a fantastic show and always has me guessing who the murderer is. Keep up the great work and please get season 8 going immediately because I’m needing my “Bones fix”.
Absolutely looove this show! It’s perfect and I never want it to end! The fact that Brennan has a baby doesn’t change anything. It’s just as good as it always was!
I think this show is unique.. It combines romance, drama, crime and a bit of humor in every episode. This combination in a show is rare. I still haven’t personally finished watching season 7 yet. However, i really do think that one more season(Season
is enough to end the show. If they do keep the show for longer than it is supposed to end, it is just going to die slowly. To make the show more interesting, it would be nice to link a crime to Booth’s or Brennan’s past. I don’t find the baby thing a problem as long as they don’t make every episode about the baby. Oh, and before i forget, ending the show with some cliffhanger other than Brennan and Booth getting married would be a huge mistake. The worst kind of show is one with a bad ending!
I’m sure all Bones Fans will agree with me,
please, stop the hate. Bones is the best crime-drama-romance TV show ever!
Bones is brilliant. Not only the story, but the characters. Those of you complaining about the show including her pregnancy, get over it. No show progresses without some type of twists and changes in the story. Not their cases changing, but their lives as well. Now we not only see the brilliant work side of Bones, but we can relate with the family side as well. Showing their lives outside of work to, only helps the show. I love it. I would be utterly dissapointed if they didn’t have another couple seasons. Or at least one season closing the series just perfectly.
What would tv be, without bones and booth ? Seriously? There is just nothing at all on tv anymore with any depth !!!! EVerything is a constant slap stick with unintresting characters and ridiculous plot lines! BONES is EPIC !!!!! its just the right weight between characters and their affect on one anothers lives, the cases and how they all work together …. its just amazing the only thing i hated at all was the loss of ZAK !!!!! I LOVED HIM !!!! and im sure im not the only one that feels that way …. however not many shows can say they survived the loss of such a great character and was able to keep going. to me that is a testimony in and of its self !!!!! WE WANT TO KEEP BONES FOREVER…..(PLEASE)
