Paul Feig, who directed Bridesmaids and hatched the series Freaks And Geeks, has gotten the go-ahead from Sky Atlantic HD for Ronna & Beverly, a six part mock talk show featuring two fifty-something Jewish American mothers who ask blunt questions of real guests and offer advice those guests probably don’t need. They filmed a pilot episode with Mad Men star Jon Hamm and Episodes star Stephen Mangan among the first guests. The hostesses are played by American writers and performers Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo who got the series after a series of critically acclaimed stage shows in the UK and the US. Feig’s US-based Classy Productions is producing with Hat Trick Productions in the UK. Chaffin and Denbo have been on Feig’s radar for several years. They first tried a pilot for Showtime, but it didn’t get picked up. “British audiences responded to these overbearing American characters, and the show is Ab Fab meets everyone’s obnoxious parents who ask horrifying questions,” Feig told me. Part of the reason he was in the UK was his work in rewriting Bridget Jones‘s Baby, which he was going to direct until he came to a parting of the ways with the principals. “There were a lot of moving pieces and varying opinions that sadly proved impossible to navigate around,” said Feig, who wasn’t sure the movie would happen. He’s firming up plans for his next feature comedy. And while Kristen Wiig has said she wasn’t interested in another installment of Bridesmaids right now, Feig said he is holding out hope there will be one, but only when Wiig and co-writer Annie Mumolo figure it out. “People will come up to me and say, good you’re not doing another, but when you actually have a hit with characters the audiences likes, why not give them more? There are intelligent people behind this, and once they find a smart next step…” For now, Feig is focused on making Ronna & Beverly work in the UK, and then hopefully in the US.

Nicest guy in town. Thx Paul, and congrats!
Way to go, Denbo! Much deserved.
I saw the Showtime pilot. It was awful. Can’t imagine this will be any better.
THe pilot was awesome — Showtime made the hugest mistake by not picking it up- Showtime’s loss is Sky Tv’s gain
Go Ronna and Bev
British audiences responded to these overbearing American characters – dont make me laugh. You mean Sky atlantic were silly enough to agree without getting any real feedback.
sounds like you know nothing about British audiences or American ones for that matter– feedback from both audiences fantastic on these two hysterically funny Jewish women
Bronx Beat, anyone? Also, Chaffin and Denbo don’t exactly sound Jewish. Is that cool they’re playing “overbearing” Jewish stereotypes? Now excuse me while I go back to controlling the banking system.
I love how every time there are two women doing ANY character work together, they are automatically compared to other double female comedy acts who also do character work. It’s like saying there’s no room for two different white male stand ups who talk about relationships.
And incidentally, Bronx Beat came on SNL long after R&B were already touring and doing live shows. Also, BB is about two YOUNGER WOMEN from the BRONX, who are not-JEWISH and have an entirely different patter. R&B also talk. Out loud. There the comparison ends. Also they are from Boston. Go ask a Yankees fan and Red Sox fan how alike the two cities are.
And deciding that Chaffin and Denbo are not Jewish makes you an ignoramus for assuming they must not be based on their names. They happen to both be Jewish. And from Boston. Maybe you are just a self hating Jew? Scared of exporting your mother’s worst behavior to other countries? Well, get used to it because it’s happening.
You might want to do a little research before sounding off. Either way, don’t watch it when it comes back to the USA. It’s for smart people who like to laugh.
Both jewish. Both hysterical.
Hi, long time listener, first time commenter. I like Bronx Beat, it’s a different game, and it started about 2-3 years after Ronna&Beverly.
Also … don’t ‘sound’ Jewish? You ‘sound’ like JK SImmons on Oz. I’m gonna go ahead and vouch for the jewishness of both girls. Good shabbos.
I’m not sure how Jewish people all over the country everywhere “sound” but the stereotype of the ones that live in suburban Massachusetts act and sound EXACTLY like Ronna and Bev. Which consequently is not at all like Bronx Beat or anyone from the Bronx in general. The character’s live show also premiered before Bronx Beat and has hosted Amy Poehler herself. You must not be too intelligent or something, because it seems pretty obvious.
Ronna and Beverly is the freshest, funniest act in town — Chaffin and Denbo exhibit a dazzling combination of writing, performing, and improv. Can’t wait to see the show.
HUGE CONGRATS to the girls! Jamie was my first improv teacher years ago and it just goes to show if you hang in there while continuing to do quality work (just check out the Ronna & Beverly web series) you will get there.
Chaffin and Denbo are hilarious and ridiculously talented, as anyone who has seen their UCB show can attest. When will “Ronna & Beverly” come to the US? Not soon enough!
Way to go, Jamie and Jessica! Smart, hilarious women. I predict that after it’s a hit in the UK, executives here will decide it’s funny enough for America.
Exactly! Everything here seems to be a take on a foreign format. Hopefully that continues and works in their favor…
Fantastic show – Jamie and Jessica are phenomenally talented and this will hopefully lead to a US version.
These gals are hilarious and have worked hard. Great to see it pay off. Feig is a genius and a gem – everyone scores in this one. Hope it gets huge over there… and comes back to us/US.
Denbo and Chaffin are incredibly talented performers and writers — I love the Ronna and Beverly live show and podcast. So happy to see all their hard work pay off. I hope we can see the show in the US.
These women are brilliantly funny! I have been following them for years. Congrats!
Showtime’s loss is Sky Tv’s gain – these two are fantastic
Go Ronna and Bev
Denbo and Chaffin are very funny women and this show sounds hilarious. Wish it was on in the States…
