EXCLUSIVE: Demian Bichir, whose performance in the Chris Weitz-directged A Better Life earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination, has signed with CAA. Bichir’s nomination was the first for a Latin American actor in that category in 23 years (since Edward James Olmos received his nod for Stand And Deliver). He also won an Ariel Award for ‘Til Death. Bichir will next be seen starring in the Oliver Stone-directed Savages, based on the Don Winslow novel. He’s currently playing Buddy Ackerman in Mexico City, the Spanish-language translation of the play Swimming With Sharks. Kevin Spacey memorably played the Ackerman role in the 1994 feature film. Bichir is managed by Sekka Scher and Amy Brownstein.

esteban!
What a douche bag!!! Carlos carreras worked his ass off with david guillod to build this guys career over the past 7 years and after getting him to the oscars he goes to caa. He has two people in sekua and amy brownstein, who i thought quit the biz 6mts ago, at least she told me client that, whom she was the “publicist” for. Now she a mgr. This is a joke all around. Of course caa is great but really, did any one over there even see the movie. This guy is ungrateful and i hope he gets what he deserves
Did his previous agents receive a commission for the work they booked for him? If so, wasn’t that the extent of their agreement?
“We will take a commission on the work we solicit and negotiate on your behalf and represent you for.”
I’m sincerely not trying to be an ass – it’s an honest question – isn’t that the implicit and explicit agreement between an actor/writer/director and the representation he hires?
If I’m a real estate developer and I hire a real estate agent to sell the first few houses in my new development, and they’re able to sell a small one for $200k, and then another small one for $210k, and then another one for $250k, etc., and then my development gets some great press and awards for its overall quality, and I see an opportunity to build and sell larger homes to wealthier buyers for $500k-$1m and more, am I being disloyal to that first real estate agent by hiring a new real estate agent with more experience in the sale of high-end homes? As the primary investor in my development, don’t I have a right to hire whomever I believe will generate the greatest return on my investment and risk?
And the real estate agents, in turn, definitely take on risk by taking on a new listing – they need to advertise the listing on their own dime, take time out of their days to show the listing to potential buyers, etc. – all without guaranteed return. But when they close a sale, don’t they receive their commission as agreed upon?
How is anyone getting screwed in this arrangement? You’re only getting screwed if the agent takes on the listing but doesn’t actively try to sell it, instead waiting for buyers to come to him, or if the agent works hard to sell a home but then finds out that the developer didn’t build it correctly and the home has quality problems, etc.
Otherwise, if I work hard to build good homes and the agent works hard to sell them at a good price, and then receives their commission on those sales, who’s getting screwed and how?
It’s exactly the agreement. You nailed it (it’s not like it’s rocket science, anyway). Yet, inevitably, every agent on Earth seems to feel much more is owed, and that anyone who ever leaves is being “disloyal.”
Yes, you got it right on the ‘agreement’. However, that’s looking at it through blinders. If you REALLY know how it works in this town, then you’d also agree, that it’s not so cut and dry,
Every once in awhile there are reps who actually do the work above and beyond just the ‘agreement’. The crazy weekend calls. The absurd middle of the night calls. The obsessive demands of what’s not in the trailer, or the hotel room isn’t on a high enough floor. The crazy other members of a team- most of whom tend to be lazy and out of their minds as well. These and MANY MANY other crazy things that talent demand, that don’t equal the financial gains; particularly when it’s a talent no one ever heard of, until a dedicated agent, or manager, has actually lifted the rock up the mountain.
And in this case in particular, the guy hasn’t been making crazy dough, as of yet, because of his value in the marketplace- not as a result of how he has been represented. And even now, likely won’t.
It is just so short cited when talent who actually were elevated by their rep, bounces at the very point the reps can have some financial and many other gains for all the man hours, and resources that went into an individual career.
Everyone sniffs out when this is the case, such as this one, and it just shows Mr. Bichir for who he is…grossly opportunistic and immoral. That’s all.
Some of you will agree, some of you won’t. But it is as it seems- DISLOYAL.
Carlos- you just keep doing what you do. Who gives a damn which agency you are at…you’re still one of the best agents no matter where your housed.
P.S. How long before CAA fires his no-name managers and he ends up at Management 360?
Yea, this point of view works- if you were an inanimate object like a house, with zero scrupples or a brain.
Then again, perhaps that’s what Demian is- a house.
Beg to differ. Carlos has certainly not represented Demian for 7 years but he sure has a lot of cheerleaders here. Demian is the one who has worked hard for over 25 years and deserves to get access to the best scripts. I was at a Q&A where Chris Weitz said he had wanted to work with Demian for a long time, and approached him. Sometimes certain agents take credit for just answering the phone.
Yea, because Weitz saw him at a screening of CHE that his agent set up. FACT. This isn’t solely about one project; this is about what his agent has done over several years; without anyone’s help. But this posting sounds like one of his managers trying to defend- but hey; whatever floats your boat.
You cannot possibly be infering carlos just answers phones right? seriously. look- the comments on here defending him, speaks for itself. ’nuff said.
Loved him on Weeds!
total douche move. like his career was going badly. oy.
Uh he wasn’t about to go to apa. Paradigm much better than apa. If his agent had stayed at paradigm he wouldn’t have left. Paradigm compared to apa is like going from four seasons hotel to courtyard by marriott. Paradigm four seasons and apa courtyard by marriott.
Hel be back on a telenovela once CAA realizes who tough it is to get him a job. He’s not a guy who just goes on a submission list
Do agencies like CAA even discover talent anymore? If Bichir sent them a headshot a year ago they probably would’ve told him to go —- himself.
The hope vs. fear scenario:
You hope Bichir gets the good, high-pay roles his talent is worthy of. He’s paid his dues. And CAA can offer him that.
OR
You fear they’ll “convince” him to play the villain in some flop sequel of a prequel of a remake of a TV show for the high-end money and ruin his career before it even took off.
I hope he makes smart choices, listens to his own drum and even does more indies (which may tick off his tenpercenters:) but will keep audiences interested in his work and ensure his longevity in this biz)
name one actor they’ve developed from the ground up?
Paula Wagner signed Tom Cruise off of TAPS.
That’s one.
I loooved him on weeds. That scene where he spanks Nancy in the car is epic tv! Will never forget that scene.
Carlos and David worked VERY hard for this guy. I am sure Demian is a nice person, but just totally lost with his own decision making. David is a bull dog and can open up and door. Carlos is one of the hardest working agents in this town. When someone lives and dies by you, you stay with them, not leave. This is disgusting to see and I am sorry that Carlos spent so many hours sweating over this. More to come for Carlos. You will be fine.
I’m not sure why you think he owes anything to anyone. It’s the nature of this business, as you move up you move on. Bichir is a wonderful actor and he made a smart move going with CAA. Carlos will be fine. So will you.
Sad to hear. Did CAA really need this? No decorum among professionals these days.
Carlos worked hard…David worked hard…no matter how hard you work it doesn’t make you a smart representative. Cuz any smart representative can see that Carlos didn’t choose to go from Paradigm to APA…who wakes up and says, I have had enough of the Marriott, time for me to go to a Holiday Inn now off the freeway?? That being said, Carlos knew (if he has any brain) that Demian stayed long enough at a dump like Paradigm…why on earth would he continue that with a bigger dump like APA? Demian is the male version of Cynthia Nixon or Edie Falco–not a movie star but a lucky actor who got a great break and has talent to go along with it. He will end up on a television show next pilot season.
The problem with your assessment in THIS case is Carlos is an incredible agent. One of the best in so many respects. Was leaving UTA the right move to Paradigm, and then APA? By your stupid hotel annology, no- but seriously … who cares!? With Carlos in particular, it doesn’t matter. The agency you are at doesn’t mean anything if you are a great rep. APA getting Carlos actually signals they are being smart about who they bring in.
APA, Gersh, IFA, Paradigm, all have individual excellent reps and it doesn’t matter at all the letters on the building. CAA, UTA, WME, ICM- all have terrible agents, as well as amazing- it doesn’t matter. And at CAA, everyone knows they just gobble up everyone for their ability to control the town. Ok- I guess that’s a strategy, but it’s not necessarily about the talent they rep.
Bichir will be way way way down the list of priority based on his value- like he’ll be services first ahead of Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Antonio Banderas, Edgar Ramirez, Clive Owen, Matthew McConoughey, Ryan Reynolds…i mean the list of top earner actors WAAAAAY ahead of Demian goes on and on.
Totally agree with KOF. CAA just sits around on their fat asses and waits for other agents/agencies to develop careers and then they swoop in when they think they might actually be able to make a buck off them. These stupid, insecure actors don’t see that and just jump right in without thinking twice. Isn’t that right, Jessica Chastain? Every single good role she had was booked while she was at Paradigm and after all that she signed on with Hilda who has since trailed her around the red carpet at every major awards show showboating as if she has anything to do with that woman’s career as it stands now. Good luck, Bichir. Have fun in your Broadway play, Jessica. I’m sure you will get a decent shot at really great projects after the first 18-20 actresses higher on the totem at CAA pass first.
APA has worked very hard to grow into a formidable agency. The agents are smart, accessible and hungry. They also work collectively for the clients, which is decidedly different from most agencies. I’m sure many very happy clients, managers, publicists, network executives, studio executives, etc. are thrilled to be in business with APA. Clients come and go but good agents are hard to find. Great work Carlos.
What good is it being at “The Four Seasons” if they never change the sheets and you can’t get food? Yah, the building is pretty. OK. Did CAA take him where he is now? Will CAA have the passion to work for this small fish in this vast ocean of big earners?
All I can say is WTF Demian. It’s not that he owes Carlos, it’s that he owes himself. He should be smart enough to look down the line and look at where he came from and where he is going.
Carlos was a GREAT agent for him and I would rather have world class service rather than silk sheets. Who cares where he is. Carlos sold him at UTA where no one cared or listened. He sold him at Paradigm. He would have sold him at APA. With zero support – Carlos took Demian from “who’s that” to the Oscars.
Guess what Demian? That ain’t UTA or Paradigm and it won’t be CAA. That was Carlos – a person who believed in you, worked tirelessly for you and has made a career for you.
Lame move, buddy. You’ll be joining the ranks of people like Kate Bosworth who dumped Billy Lazarus as soon as she had heat or Emile Hirsch who fired his agency after he chose to be in Speed Racer and needed to blame someone for it. He went from being an emerging star to someone who seems a little creepy, unshaven and someone who takes small parts in small movies.
Oh well. Carlos has the mojo. He has the ability to identify potential and to work tirelessly to get results.
It will be “Demian Who” soon enough.
This is so spot on that it’s not even funny. It’s EXACTLY how the business works… Foolish actor, but Carlos will be fine.
I think the writing was on the wall. You can only keep a fish in a tank until the point that he outgrows it. Demian, Go on and seek new oceans, and from time to time return to the river that gaveyou birth.
Seek new oceans? Wtf is that? Go back to the river, huh?
He’s gone from being a big fish to a guppie. Whoever thinks being in a bigger ocean is better served, is just well- stupid.
“Bigger” is not always better if you end up starving from negligence.
To the fool who believes paradigm is the four seasons, to apa’s marriot – how many people did paradigm book into pilots this season? How many did apa? How many academy award nominees for best actor or actress did paradigm have? How many did apa? Who has a bigger touring department? Branding and lifestyle? (Say what you will but apa has made a mint of kim kardashian having a large ass) whose phones are currently rininging off the hooks from agents at icm looking for jobs? Ryan Martin or that little Elf named Norm? And before you think about mentioning the agent with abnormally huge eyes who reps the butter face girl from DESCENDANTS, just know CAA already has her.
Fool, I wonder where you come from as I would very much like to visit. I’d arrange a stay at the marriot and be treated like a king! Whilst I suspect the four seasons there is more like the motel 8 (gersh) I videotape strangers making love to your girlfriend in.
I feel bad for every single one of your clients that you’ve swindled into listening to your judgement.
Jim Osborne?
Big mistake. What will CAA do for him? Pass on the scripts Clooney and Pitt passed on? He is a wonderful actor but not someone you can package a film around. The CAA union will not last.
Love all the stupid hotel analogies. Probably posted by the bitter paradigm agency which is losing agents and clients while apa is growing and solvent.
How many nominees did uta or paradigm have this year.
How many did APA have? Zero. Bichir never went with Carlos to APA and why would he?
Dont they have Oldman? uhhh….
Gary Oldman doesn’t count?
apa had two
Well, they did have Gary Oldman nominated. i don’t think he is a zero.
Uh- dumbass; APA had 2- Gary Oldman and Viola Davis. Clearly your out of the business so Shut the F*** up.
viola davis – best actress
gary oldman – best actor
you. are. a. fool.
You’re kidding right? Gary Oldman and Viola Davis. 2. Not zero.
Who commissioned Oldman on TINKER TAILER SOLDIER SPY? (Paradigm) How much money has Oldman brought into APA since the Mighty Oz was cast out of the building? (Zero)
WHO put Oldman into TTSP? OZ.
WHO followed OZ to APA. GOLDMAN.
I have a lot of thoughts on this, but the only one i will share based on the previous comments is that APA is a far better agency than Paradigm.
Apa is not in the same league as caa, wme, uta, paradigm or icm. That is why he left his agent.
The truth is agencies are just like the fish in the sea. Little fish is eaten by medium fish which is in turn eaten by bigger fish. For all the clients APA loses to the bigger agencies they have poached just as many from respectable hard-working boutique agencies who regard them in the same light as they do CAA et al: The Death Stars
Darwin at its clearest.
