EXCLUSIVE: Casey Affleck is poised to join the cast of Out of the Furnace, the Scott Cooper-directed revenge thriller that Relativity Media will put into production later this year with Christian Bale starring. The script, which originated as a Brad Ingelsby spec that sold with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott attached in 2008, is finally coming together. Bale plays a guy who’s released from prison and wants only to get his life back and marry his gal. All that changes when his brother is murdered, and the mission becomes revenge. Affleck, I hear, will play the unfortunate brother. Scott Free and Appian Way are producing, Brooklyn Weaver is exec producer. Affleck is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Nice talent involved in a very cliché concept. Well, at least they are killing the brother not the girlfriend for a change.
Yes, it’s been done a million times, but Ingelsby’s script, originally titled THE LOW DWELLER, gave us original characters and situations. Curious to see how this turns out.
Nice name!
Uh, who exactly were the original characters? A bad guy with a scar and a pet? The ex-con man of little words? The pretty Madonna girlfriend? The grizzled old man with ghosts in his past?
This thing was a mad libs script written with a thesaurus and a lot of five dollar words.
@ Ozgur — you’re kidding about the girlfriend, right? Spoiler alert, yes of course she too gets killed because of what our tortured hero hath wrought with his deeds. Except because the writer’s trying to channel Cormac McCarthy it’s not cliche, it’s deep!
Very much looking forward to this.
This is shaping up to be a great cast, but they *have* to do something about that title.
Will Ingelsby still be credited with the story? I heard that Scott Cooper heavily rewrote the script.
There is not one single comma left from Ingelsby’s script. That’s not an exaggeration at all. Cooper changed the locale (hence the bad title change) He changed who the characters are. He changed the plot. He changed the characters’ names. Only thing left is there are two brothers. One gets killed. The other gets pissed. It’s very very strange. They should’ve just hired Cooper to write his own movie about a brother seeking revenge — cuz that’s basically what he did. And they could’ve saved heavily on writer/producer attachment fees.
“The Low Dweller” sounds better for the title. Regardless they’re assembling a brilliant cast here so I’m very much looking forward to this. Hopefully Cooper can repeat the magic that he created with Crazy Heart.
I always thought Casey Affleck was better looking than his brother Ben and Casey is a much better actor too!
That nice young boy should consider voice-modification surgery.
I second that.
The concept was cool. The script was boring however — at least when it was called The Low Dweller. Hope they get a writer to do the proper rewrites on it. I think with the excellent talent they have that should not be a problem. Also, the original script had cliches in it that needed work. At least parts of the writing was strong.
Have to third or fourth the dissenters on the “Low Dweller” draft. Really was one cliche after another. Was constantly surprised at the level of talent it attracted.
