EXCLUSIVE: CBS’ half-hour pilot Partners has reworked and recast some of its supporting characters. The multicamera project, from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, centers on lifelong friends and business partners —architects Charlie (David Krumholtz), who is straight, and Louis (Michael Urie), who is gay. Co-starring as the duo’s significant others are Sophia Bush as Charlie’s fiancé Ali and Brandon Routh as Louis steady partner. Also originally cast as regulars in the pilot were Elizabeth Regen as Ro-Ro, Charlie and Louis’ colorful assistant, and Brit Lucy Davis as Renata, droll bookkeeper for Charlie’s fiancé Ali, a jewelry boutique owner. After the pilot’s table read, the Ro-Ro role was made guest-starring (with series option) and was recast with Tracy Vilar. The character of Renata has been written out while a new guest-starring role, Cassandra, has been introduced, with Saturday Night Live alumna Molly Shannon tapped to play it.

Isn’t this the exact same premise these two guys write every single pilot season?
Wait, is one lead gay and the other straight? I’m shocked, shocked.
It might be the Sophia Bush factor but is my most anticipated pilot of the season and these changes seem to be for the good
Nice. Molly Shannon has really grown on me. Seems like they could do a really good movie or show with her, but I feel like I’ve never seen her with the right material. She has such exuberance and sexual magnetism.
Michael Urie was hilarious on Ugly Betty and I loved Will & Grace. Have hopes for this one.
Saw the run-thru on Friday night and both Elizabeth Reagan and Lucy Davis were in it. They were not replaced after the table read. I saw them live on Friday and they were hilarious. Can’t imagine what these guys are doing??? Beside the cast – the pilot is a hot mess– so don’t get your hopes up too high ???? this is the 3rd go around for this lame multi-cam massacre.
Bad writing? Fire the actors! These producers always shoot the messenger.
Put a fork in Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. It really is just a matter of time before they sell this exact premise to the CW.
Michael Urie is hilarious but deserves so much more than this. Sophia Bush? Hmmm, not exactly a comedic ingenue. Regardless these guys need to just stop with this premise and just be happy with their Will & Grace royalties.
I too saw the run through on Friday night and the writing was all over the place, not necessarily the actors. I thought the 2 actresses that they let go were fine, given the stuff they had to work with. The stereo-typical gay jokes were passe and a “gay” Brandon Routh was as boring as watching paint dry. Good luck Molly Shannon!
Big horking snoozefest. I didn’t like this show when it was called “Will and Grace”, why would I watch it under a new title?
Same old jealous drivel in the comments. The script has actually been worked into a spot on sitcom. The supporting cast just wasn’t holding their own against a genius lead group. This is a good move by the network. The show plays like a winner and Max and Dave have crafted some of their best work. And before anyone pukes up another hairball…no I don’t work on the show. I read the script and then was on the lot and lucky enough to catch a rehearsal. Anything can happen but high hopes for this one.
ALL BROADCAST NETWORK TELEVISION MULTI-CAM COMEDY SUCKS. They are shadows of what they used to be. But Max & Dave are two of the best, two of the funniest. So yes, it rings similar to W&G, but with their writing behind it, I’ll watch it. I’d rather watch this than some low or high concept multicam with abysmal joke writing (HIMYM, MIKE & MOLLY, WHITNEY,etc…).
And that cast sounds awesome! Molly Shannon is brilliant! But far and away, the best is David Krumholtz. It’s about time someone treats this guy like one of the greatest actors of his generation both dramatically and in comedy. I’ll give anything he’s in a chance. I even sat through “The Playboy Club” because he was the best thing in it, and played a character so different from anything I’d seen before. CBS was brilliant to get him in this pilot.
Hackneyed and tired. Mutchnick, Kohan, and the idea.
You forgot arrogant and lazy.
I was at the run-through as well. I liked Elizabeth Regan. Wasn’t thrilled about Sophia Bush in this particular role.
I don’t care that Bud and Max may have pitched this 5000 times. The gay man/straight man relationship has rarely been explored on television or in the movies and it needs to be.
Really I was at the run through as well and did not care for Elizaeth Ragan. I agree the support cast just didn’t hold their weight the change was necessary if this pilot has a chance. Sophia Bush, well she is only on for the name no hope there. Either way the original support cast were unknowns without much experience or talent I do understand the cut. Good Luck Partners.
@”truthman” no, you don’t work on the show , but you have a friend that does? Possibly one that just got hired? say… Monday? I say.. You are right on ONE thing… Anything can happen! Good luck to them!
Even though this sounds like Will & Grace I hope the show makes the cut if only because this is the 3rd attempt to have it picked up.
Seems like they would have ironed the bugs out by now.
I like the premise but is David Krumholtz playing Charlie from Numb3rs or is he playing the Jew from Harold and Kumar? Either or would work but I’m hoping for the Charlie-type, straight, straight man. =)) He could be like Greg to Michael’s Dharma. Except not married. I loved Michael’s character Marc on Ugly Betty. Something about the role reminded me of The Joker from Batman. I know I always say this but its true. His headshot from their first season just kind of shouts Snidely Whiplash. Molly Shannon would be awesome if she’s more of a wacky, albeit nurturing, best friend. Otherwise its just Karen redux to the other two’s Will and Jack from Will and Grace. I mean I know they’re not just retreading old ground because that needs to be packed in and hauled off to TV Land. o.O Hot in Cleveland excluded, of course. ^_^ Lightning doesn’t strike twice, people. Gotta make this *great* and one step beyond what’s been done before. Let your hair grow a little. If Will and Grace were like the Beach Boys then make this your Beatles.
