EXCLUSIVE: Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman is putting that cosmic mind of his toward his first book. Kaufman, whose scripts include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Human Nature and Being John Malkovich, has just closed a deal for his first novel for Grand Central Publishing, I’m told. The subject of the novel is being kept under wraps, which is probably just as well since it is pretty close to impossible to log line any of his original script creations anyway, even if you try after seeing his wonderfully imaginative movies. Kaufman takes this on even as he continues to develop to direct his script Frank or Francis, a Hollywood satire set to music where a film director feuds with a blogger and…oh, never mind, what the hell does that mean anyway? Nic Cage, Steve Carell, Elizabeth Banks, Catherine Keener, Jack Black, Kevin Kline and Paul Reubens are all circling that one. Kaufman is repped by WME.

When’s the pub date? I am totally gonna foist this one on my suburban maven book klub!!! Seriously. That’s 11-12 copies sold, Charlie, and that’s a promise!
Write like a motherfucker!
Kiss of death Paul Reubens? Wake up!
Whoa whoa whoa! Paul Reubens is amazing. One of the best character actors in Hollywood, and one hell of a showman. Did you see the Pee Wee revival? Seriously, one of the funniest and endearing things I have seen in a long time. In my humble opinion, he only adds to whatever he’s a part of. Give him a chance.
Love this! Charlie is the bomb. (And Paul Reubens is running laps around irony/dated/retro and keeps flying by. He’s not ‘kiss of death’ – he’s just gettin’ started you silly sallie.) Can not wait.
The Frank or Francis script is brilliant. Can’t wait.
No mention of Synecdoche, New York? Sure, it’s only one of the greatest films made in the past decade, (and Roger Ebert agrees with me…and he’s dead). Who are you hacks? And, finally, where can I find the Frank or Francis script? I haven’t tried Googling it, but I think we both know–how many are you?–a special jam is required to gain access. Oh, and I need to talk to Chuck’s agent; please have him call me. My name is: Michael and…THESE be ma digits: (845) 417-7559 This isn’t a comment, so don’t post this–just follow my orders…er, request. Yes. Thank you, kindly.
