UPDATE SUNDAY: Since I posted the story yesterday, several people working on the show have come forward to confirm Chase’s version of the events. One noted that the show indeed was “suffering through a ‘non-script day’” when Chase walked off. Another claimed that most of the cast and crew members who attended the wrap party disapproved of Harmon’s behavior at the bash.
PREVIOUS: Things are looking up for NBC’s perennial bubble series Community, which has been solid since returning from a long hiatus earlier this month, establishing itself as NBC’s second highest-rated comedy behind The Office. But behind the scenes, a rift between co-star Chevy Chase and creator/executive producer/showrunner Dan Harmon has escalated into an ugly war of words.
Accounts of the feud have leaked online, including on social news website Reddit. The chronology of the events, corroborated to me by multiple sources, involves Chase walking off the set of the show on the last day of shooting last month without filming one of his scenes, which reportedly was to close out the season finale. Then at the wrap party, Harmon got up and gave a “Fuck you, Chevy” speech in front of Chase and his wife and daughter, and encouraged the crew to join him in saying “fuck you” to the actor. Chase left immediately and later left Harmon a profane-laden voice message, a portion of which found its way to the Web after Harmon played it in front of other people. Click here for audio. (Warning: foul language!) In the voice message, Chase addresses both his storming off the set, which he attributes to not getting the script beforehand, (some say it’s because he didn’t find the scene funny) and the wrap party incident.
People close to the matter told me they weren’t surprised by the feud, noting that Chase already had a reputation of being difficult before signing on for Community. (I hear it was NBC’s former boss Ben Silverman who championed Chase for the project and was instrumental in bringing him on board.) Word is Chase has stormed off the set of the NBC show in the middle of a scene a number of times and has also gotten into arguments with Community executive producers-directors Anthony and Joe Russo. There had been tension between Chase and Harmon, and with both of them described as “passionate” or “volatile,” depending who you talk to, a blowup was “inevitable,” one person said. Ironically, a recorded Chevy Chase phone call played a major role in another feud involving the Saturday Night Live alum, that with shock jock Howard Stern.
It is unclear at the moment what impact the falling-out between Harmon and Chase would have on Community and whether Chase would continue on the show. The producers’ attention right now is focused on securing a fourth-season renewal for the offbeat comedy, which appears more and more likely. The pickup is key to the syndication prospects of the series, which has an off-network deal with Comedy Central as well as a non-exclusive pact with Hulu. While he was the biggest name when Community launched, the series has made stars out of several of its little known supporting players, with Joel McHale firmly established as the show’s leading man. Still, Community has benefited Chase, boosting his sagging career with a role on a hip show.

Harmon “sounds like” a jerk. Chevy *is* a fucking jerk. No surprise Harmon is tired of his shit. Chevy doesn’t think a scene is funny, but hasn’t done a funny thing on his own or even participated in a funny thing in well over twenty years.
Didn’t Comedy Central throw a Roast for Chevy and not one of his friends or colleagues showed up because he had alienated them all?
He’s got a reputation for being an a-hole. His mistake here was dishing it out to someone who could sling it right back at him and then some.
Right. And then some. In front of his wife and daughter. We seem to be cutting Harmon a break because we enjoy his writing so much. And good on ya. But think about what he did. And think about what that makes him.
Please. If there was a Fuck You Chevy party and everyone he’s been an ass to in his career was invited, there would be such a big crowd the Kodak Theater could probably be renamed the Fuck You Chevy Theater.
Actors are human and some can be rough around the edges, but there are actors who contain their craziness/grumpiness/douchiness or learn to manage it. And then you have performers like Chevy Chase, who’s just always a hideous person to work with, no matter what. Some people never learn.
Let’s let Bill Murray have the last word:
“Fucking Chevy. Medium talent.”
Chevy’s probable response:
“I’ll think about that, Bill, while I have a drink and watch the first 10 seconds of “Razor’s Edge,” then I’ll do a spit take, and call it a night.”
since when did Chevy Chase need a laugh track?
Wish I could get away w/ this immature shit @ work.
I did once work w/ Chase on a commercial. He was a dick.
Just give the whole thing to Derrick Comedy and be done with it.
Makes sense, this is very much their style
I was at the wrap party. the best part of that night besides the muppets that work the show getting their drunk on after a long ass season, was Harmon leading the “fuck you chevy” call. Chevy’s always been an asshole. everyone knows this. He made his own wrap times always and when on set never bothered to learn his lines. thank god for that, because we got paid by the hour, its because of him that we got so much overtime!
Chuck: I don’t doubt for a minute that Chase is a major douche-nozzle to anyone and everyone he encounters, but how did you feel about Harmon doing what he did in front of Chase’s FAMILY?
Didn’t that bother you? If only just a little?
You’re the only one who seems so outraged by that Classic Liberal. Chase’s family know full well and perhaps better than anyone what a tool he is.
Dan’s staff is from Channel 101. He’s also the creator of it.
A few of my friends work crew on the show. The “Fuck You” speech is due to Chevy’s constant throwing out of that phrase to everyone and anyone. Chevy , in a center-of-attention , type of way… decides to be insanely uncomfortable around people.
A few years ago he was part of a scheme where a movie he was paid to be in was part of a Vegas Ponzi Scheme to get people to rent time shares. The dude doesn’t really care about comedy or the audience anymore. All about a paycheck….just like the bank he named himself after.
Harmon is the asshole of the century here’s what he thinks is funny:
The History of Channel 101
1999 – After creating Heat Vision and Jack for the FOX network, Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab are banished from legitimate television.
2000 – Rob Schrab makes a series of home movies about eating poop and having sex with babies. Dan Harmon, not to be outdone, makes a movie about Chris Tallman coming back from the dead and raping him in the ass.

The saddest part is that no one did this in a “FUCK YOU CHEVY!” sort of way. IT was just good old fashioned mockery. He says F-U to everyone. Especially the cast and crew. “FU Dan” “FU Donald” “FU PA” …. it was getting back at him.
Channel 101 also is responsible for creating The Lonely Island, Human Giant and Ellie Kemper. And from a writer’s side it’s hard pressed to find a decent comedy that doesn’t have a Channel 101 alumnist around. It’s cool that you’ll never have their success because your taste is too high.
Again… it wasn’t just Harmon. The whole cast and crew joined in to do this. Not because they love Harmon but hate Chevy’s ego.
I agree with comments. Show was growing on me, but “Fuck” the show…..
Who cares? They are both douchebags these days. But at least Chevy actually made some great movies. Harmon seems like an idiot. His internet videos got him a show and now he thinks he’s a big hollywood “show runner”. Is there a douchier thing to be than a “showunner” is that just someone without directing ability? Seems like it. meh whatever.
WHy am I even writing this? Why do I care. I”m going to go eat something and watch sports. Or maybe I’ll watch Fletch. Nah i’ll watch sports.
Community is funnier than Vacation and Fletch combined.
Dan Harmon thinks he’s a showrunner because he IS a showrunner. There’s this place called Wikipedia that can teach you what that is. So yeah, go cuddle with your ignorant snark and watch some sports.
Chevy walked off the set of the last episode of the season… before shooting the last part of the last episode of the season. Because of this they don’t have an ending for the last episode of the season. He literally ruined an entire episode of television by being an asshole. There’s only one side to this story. This is not a gray area. He’s a giant narcissistic piece of shit.
not true. what he walked off on was filming for a “tag” for a different, mostly animated, episode.
I know exactly what the tag was. Don’t try to belittle his dickhead move.
Given the meta nature of Community, I think that in the tradition of Fresh Prince, Iron Man 2, or Harry Potter, that Pierce’s character should be re-cast next season with no reference made. Make it dramatically strange, even. Tom Arnold, George Takei, Cedric the Entertainer…just sayin.
How about Kathy Bates?
Funny that you mention the Dumbledore switcheroo in the Harry Potter movies because Michael Gambon could make a weirdly awesome addition to Community. They could just import his character from Luck.
The show is much too meta and should be cancelled for something more mainstream. Give a new group of people a chance and let this show die a natural death along with The Office both of them are unwatchable now.
Sorry, but that’s bullshit . The show is the best sitcom on network TV right now. It may be “too meta” for you, but for viewers who find mainstream comedies like Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, and Whitney physically and mentally painful to watch, Community is a port in the storm of mediocrity.
Nope. Ain’t an April Fool’s ruse: Community has got some of the best writing for boob tube comedy. I guess it comes as a bit of a disappointment to see that a stand-out talent like Dan Harmon may not be an exemplar of commensurate class.
Still, can’t take anything away from what Harmon’s done; his show beats the pants off of more pablum fare such as Big Bang Theory which, as the poster above named Max rightly points out, makes for mediocrity with a capital M. Hope this is all just some warped publicity stunt to attract more eyeballs. After all, conflict sells, right?
Sorry, but that’s not bullshit, unless you’re a fan of turning the sitcom format into a trivial pursuit nerd fest, in which you enjoy congratulating yourself for recognizing obscure 80′s movie references made by stiff actors always in the service of a desperate, unlikely plot twist. And Allison Brie’s cleavage.
George Takei would be an unbelievably hilarious choice to take the role of Pierce, and he semi-narrated that one halloween episode so we know he’s already in with the show.
I would probably collapse from sheer joy if they cast Bill Murray as Pierce for the 4th and final season, though. You have no idea how much that would mean to me as a huge fan of Bill Murray, Stripes, and Community.
Chevy Chase isn’t dead? Oh, I’m sorry, just his career. Since the Not Ready days he has been a one trick pony. Was/is/and always will be. It got old real quick, and in old age hasn’t gotten one iota better.
Are you telling me Harmon played some obscenity-laced recorded message from Chevy in front of his Harmon town audience? That’s inexcusable and foolish. Did he not stop to consider the consequences of having this feud dragged out into the public sphere? I hope this doesn’t hurt the show’s shot at a 4th season.
Chevy is the one thing I have always disliked about the show. They don’t need him at all.
Write Pierce out, officially include Chang into the group full time. Ethnically it balances out, and Pierce was never an important character anyway (though this may have been intentional, to give the show an “out”). Pierce’s most important episodes deal with whether to kick him out or keep him anyway — not really heavy character development type stuff.
Two assholes with huge egos had a conflict? Weird.
Though, Harmon was right to be upset with Chase. Walking out on shooting a scene, especially an important one, is horrible.
After listening to the voice mail and hearing all of Harmon’s kiss-ass sycophants laughing at Chase all I can think is that this show should be cancelled immediately. Chase was right to be so angry and hearing Dan’s suck-up lackeys laughing at Chevy’s justified anger is truly disgusting. They all need to be punished for being such arrogant obnoxious jerks. If Chevy loses money by no longer having a show to work on then that’s too bad for him. He’s a snob and a pain but Harmon and his employees are worse.
Everyone has known that Chase is a jerk for 30+ years. And, of course, Harmon – himself a spectacular ass – can be counted on to react to it in the worst way possible. Chase is a narcissistic asshole, Harmon is a petulant child who is simultaneously narcissistic *and* self-loathing, somehow. Choose your poison.
Chase deserves any ill-will he gets for his years of mistreating people. Pierce has been a constant drag on the show as well, but I’m not sure how much of that is Chase’s fault. It almost seems like the writers have thrown the baby out with the bathwater by making Pierce so vile.
And yet, getting up and making a scene in front of Chase’s family is lame. Chevy deserves it, but that’s just unnecessary. Unless his family is terrible too. Who knows.
Anyway, this is such a meta show that they could replace Chevy with another actor, have only Abed notice it, and make lots of Bewitched references and it wouldn’t feel out of place. I like the Bill Murray suggestion, but he’s no bed of roses lately either.
I notice how everyone in that recording suddenly stops laughing when Chevy reminds them of what Dan did in front of his FAMILY!! That’s disgusting in my book and Chevy has every right to leave that message.
To me Harmon loses any standing he may have had by proofing how low he’ll go. What a scum bag…
This all sounds like an early april fool’s joke. I’m taking it with a grain of salt right now…
What Harmon did was immature but I don’t blame him for being frustrated with Chevy not only for walking off, but also for telling reporters things like this about the show:
“I’m funny. Pierce isn’t funny. I have creative issues with this show. I always have. I’m not really gonna buck you all up a lot and say that this is the one, the one that tells it innovatively. It is what it is. I would like to see it go further. I think, if you know me and my humor over the years, you know that this is certainly not my kind of thing. I probably won’t be around that much longer, frankly.”

Just my two cents… One thing I’ve always liked about Community is the cast bond that seems to be in place. Members of the cast regularly appear on Joel McHale’s ‘The Soup’ to promote the show, getting involved in skits, etc. All but one… In 3 seasons I don’t recall ever seeing Chevy involved. He seems like such an outsider. I don’t think the show would suffer without him, nor would he likely be missed. I’m all for season 4 without Piers.
Chevy was one of the first to show up on the soup for McHale and the shows benefit, and was extremely supportive of the show before Harmon got weird.

On Chase’s side here.
