Ciaran Hinds (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) has joined Political Animals, USA Network’s 6-episode drama series from Greg Berlanti, Laurence Mark and Warner Horizon, which premieres this summer. Written by Berlanti, the Washington DC-based series is a fictional look at a former first family that exposes a dynasty weakened by political ambition, lust and greed. It centers on Elaine Barrish (Sigourney Weaver), the divorced former First Lady and newly appointed Secretary of State who throws herself into the job after recovering from the dissolution of her marriage to Bud Hammond (Hinds) and losing the presidential nomination. She attempts to keep her family together, while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and a hungry DC journalist (Carla Gugino) bent on destroying her career. Hinds’ jovial ex-president Bud Hammond is a gifted politician who was once loved by the American public but has struggled since his divorce from Elaine, and his out-of-office antics have caused a tumble in his popularity. He is still as much in love with his ex-wife as the office he once held and is eager to take on the role of elder statesman if Elaine calls on him.

What a cast! Wow! Sigourney Weaver, Carla Gugino, Ciaran Hinds and young guys Wolk and Stan. USA has a really gem in their hands. Hope they don’t destroy it because they have a mighty chance of finally getting into Drama race at the Emmys.
Absolutely, what a cast indeed! Don’t forget Ishibashi, she’s a phenomenal actress as well! I can’t wait to watch…
Instead of “Political Animals” why isn’t it just called “A Somewhat Fictionalized Bill and Hillary”?
Ciaran Hinds playing a former president. I like it!
Is anyone else surprised this USA show is drawing such top-drawer talent to this show? I like Psych and Burn Notice as much as the next guy, but the rest of the “characters welcome” original programming seems like real dreck. (Fairly Legal, Suits, and Necessary Roughness remind me of the South Park-skit about the manatees that grab random words out of a tank to make Family Guy episodes.)
Here’s hoping this a harbinger of a new era at USA!
