Another Cougar Town co-star has booked a pilot in second position. Dan Byrd has closed a deal for the lead in CBS’ untitled Louis CK/Spike Feresten multicamera comedy pilot, an ensemble of young people trying to achieve their creative dreams in these tough financial times. It centers on Fred (Byrd), a bright but broke film editor who can’t stand stupidity and serves as a sardonic observer of people and their foibles. Louis CK and Feresten wrote the pilot, which will be directed by Andy Ackerman. BermanBraun and CBS TV Studios are producing, Byrd, repped by ICM and Dan Spilo at Industry, plays Courteney Cox’s son Travis on Cougar Town. He joins fellow co-star Josh Hopkins, who also signed on for a pilot (NBC’s Kari Lizer comedy) as Cougar Town appears unlikely to be renewed.
Over at ABC, Annabeth Gish has been cast in drama pilot Americana, a family soap that centers on iconic fashion designer Robert Soulter (Anthony LaPaglia), the patriarch of a sprawling family who just welcomed a new member, Alice Clarke (Ashley Greene), a young designer whose shocking arrival turns the family and the legendary label inside out. Gish will play Alice’s mother, a fading beauty, in the pilot, written by Michael Setzman and directed by Phillip Noyce.
Luke Goss (Hellboy II) has joined another ABC drama pilot, the Melissa Rosenberg-written Penoza. Based on the Dutch format, it centers on Martha, the widow of an assassinated criminal who is forced to adopt her husband’s role in a crime syndicate in order to protect her family. Goss will play the bodyguard of Martha’s mobster father who is assigned to look after her and her children. For Brit Goss, repped by Luber Roklin and UK’s DW Management, this marks the first foray into television.

Though I disagree with his eyewear, Dan Byrd is an amazing actor. He’ll be great playing Louis CK.
dan is good, but the louis ck pilot is all crappy exposition & dated jokes. just awful.
Dated jokes? If anything I thought it tried too hard in places to be topical.
In any event, I rather enjoyed it.
“Hates stupid people… sardonic observer of people and their foibles.” The plot description will be a turn-off for anyone who isn’t a mean, judgmental prick. Byrd even looks like a pompous little fart.
A very fine line must be walked, although apparently a couple people here liked the script so what do I know.
Well, I’m a mean judgmental prick and I thought the script was worse than awful… so they’re really in trouble.
I laughed with a mouthful of OJ and sprayed it all over my laptop. Thanks Deg!
I like Dan, and I love Louis CK, but that pilot is just horrid.
Although I was never a fan of COUGAR TOWN..its nice to see the cast move on to other projects that showcase there talents..ABC has treated the show like a red headed step child and I’m sure the cast is ready to move on to bigger and better projects
Red headed stepchild? Are you kidding me? “Cougar Town” had the protected timeslot following one of ABC’s biggest hits, “Modern Family”, for twoseasons, even though “Cougar Town” regularly dropped 50% of its lead-in.
Again: for two seasons. How much more is ABC expected to prop up a ratings failure?
I’m really liking the casting of Americana. I have high hopes it could turn into the new Ugly Betty, but with a little bit of Brothers and Sisters.
I keep reading that the people on Cougartown blame the show title for its lack of viewers. But the truth is, it is a really awful show, top to bottom. Stilted writing, lazy direction, and dinner theater performances. Busy Phillips? She should stick to riding Michelle Williams coat tails. Sad.
Cougar Town was never a bad show (unlike, say, the abysmally unfunny New Girl with Deschannel trying desperately to be cute and falling on her ass every time and let’s not get started on the writing and acting of everyone else in the show) but it never really caught on and after the first season I don’t think ABC ever tried.
The writing was on the wall with the shenigans over the air date of season 3. The title doesn’t quite fit the show as it ended up, but I always liked the title. None of the alternatives were actually any better.
It’ll be shame if it gets cancelled (though it seems inevitable) though. On the flip side, it means I can watch less TV because none of the comedy pilots so far, or most returning shows appear up to much on paper.
