EXCLUSIVE: After venturing into original scripted series with the pickups of two acclaimed dramas that had faced cancellation, Friday Night Lights and Damages, DirecTV is moving onto launching its own original drama series. I’ve learned that the satcaster has picked up Rogue, a 10-episode drama produced by Entertainment One. Thandie Newton is in talks to star in the project, written by British writer-director Matthew Parkhill (The Caller). It centers on an undercover cop (Newton) who takes on a gangster after her young son is killed in a drive-by shooting. The project was developed at Momentum Entertainment by head of scripted Nick Hamm who will serve as an executive producer. This would mark the first series regular role for Newton, who has been heavily pursued for pilots and series over the last few years, including this season.
Her only previous series gig was an arc on ER. Newton, most recently seen in Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds, is with WME, which also reps Parkhill, and Untitled. DirecTV is the latest non-traditional TV distributor to order scripted original series. Netflix has already greenlighted three, David Fincher’s House Of Cards starring Kevin Spacey, Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove starring Famke Janssen and Jenji Kohan’s Orange Is The New Black. Hulu has comedy series Battleground, while Crackle has ordered anthology series Unknown.

What’s the point of all these digital series just doing the same old type of shows that we already get in vast quantities from cable and broadcast?
Here’s a thought: someone do a type of show that isn’t anywhere on the dial already.
AGREED. That’s whyI rarely watch a webseries, usually they are low quality, low budget, run of the mill plotlines with mediocre actors who are unknown. Where’s the draw and even when they have known actors, they are usually boooring.
These aren’t webseries and Thandie Newton, Kevin Spacey, and Famke Janssen aren’t exactly unknowns.
I’m assuming these will be broadcast level quality, not online. If they are more in the vein of an HBO or Showtime series, it’s a positive.
Have you seen “Intersection”? Low budget for sure, but great acting. Kind of like a mix of good indie movies and TV.
Congrats to Matthew and Nick!! Matthew is incredibly talented and it is so nice to see him get an outlet to showcase that. And congrats to Momentum! Isn’t this their first scripted venture?
I agree that it’s the same old type of shows that we already get. They should branch out more… much more and think outside the box with creative concepts that often get overlooked.
What channel is rogue on
Ch 239 audience. Premieres April 3.
Shonda Rhimes did just that with ABCs Scandal
Just watched the premier of Rogue. Seems to have great legs (pun)…for a good run. Will be interesting to see if it will achieve a groundswell of support and perhaps even rival Scandal. Because of the DIRECTV connection it will be able to provide scandalous racy viewing for its audience that Scandal can’t. Great casting, great visuals (love the Bay Area), excellent edgy script, all make for a possible Sopranos “fix”, 2013 style!
