EXCLUSIVE: Akiva Goldsman has found his leading lady for Winter’s Tale, the Warner Bros adaptation of the 1983 Mark Helprin novel that the Oscar-winning scribe will make his feature directorial debut. I’m told that Jessica Brown Findlay beat out a slew of young actresses for the female lead. Findlay plays Lady Sybill Crawley in Downton Abbey.
In Winter’s Tale, she will play a dying woman who falls in love with a thief who breaks into her home, a palatial West Side mansion, in a drama that takes place in 19th century and contemporary Manhattan. Right now, Warner Bros is close to setting the thief, with Aaron Johnson and Garrett Hedlund the frontrunners. In addition, Russell Crowe is in final negotiations to play half a demon named Pearly Soames, and Will Smith is rumored to be attached as well. The latter two are smaller roles and came out of past collaborations between the actors and the writer. Goldsman, who won his Oscar for scripting A Beautiful Mind, worked with Crowe on that film, and Smith on I Am Legend. Shooting will begin October 15 in New York. WME reps Findlay, who is managed by Management 360 and repped in the UK by Troika.
Goldsman’s Weed Road is based at Warner Bros, and the studio is in talks to make The Dark Tower, the Goldsman-scripted adaptation of the mammoth Stephen King novel series that will be directed by Ron Howard. Javier Bardem was attached to play lead gunslinger Roland Deschain when the project was at Universal, and Goldsman is producing with Brian Grazer and King.

Winters Tale was one of the most pleasurable reads of my life. It’s story is highly cinematic and I hope that whoever is attached to this project can bring all the right elements together to make it work. Guillermo Del Toro sounds like a good fit.
I have to disagree, Stephen. I’m not sure if the enhanced-reality of the book can work on the screen. Some beautifully-written passages, but they won’t translate.
We’ll see, I guess. Goldsman is an OK writer.
You either have trouble with reading compression or didn’t read this article.
There is almost no way that any film version can do this book justice.
Oh, Christ, not Akiva Goldsman. I really wish Martin Scorsese had been able to make this film during the 80′s.
Ditto. Scorsese had the rights at one point. Regardless, this book is so dense, so fantastical, so lyrical, I don’t know if ANY filmmaker will be able to pull it off.
Just snipping out even some of the “smaller” passages is like hacking away at a perfect sculpture. It is not a work for the “Hollywood” work over. Oddly, this could work as a 5 hour no-limits epic for an HBO or other network bold enough to get all of it in there, epic scale and sweep and all.
Not surprised, she’s the best looking by far.
Weren’t Benjamin Walker and Tom Hiddleston testing for this role? How did thy go from them to the dullards Aaron Johnson and Garret Hedlund?
Nice for Brown-Findlay beating out some of the hottest young actresses around for the role but I’d rather see the divine Michelle Dockery getting some high profile film roles.
Hooray for Lady Sybil!
Great choice, Findlay is sultry-sexy and a pretty good actor.
Thank God, it’s Akiva Goldman who is in charge
of the script and will direct ! Such a fantastic
and complex novel deserves it .
Obviously, only those who love and revere Helprin’s writing and this book in particular will bother to post, so let’s assume that Mr. Goldsman feels similarly. Why else would he spend the time & energy on such a complex narrative? He has proved his capabilities with the likes of A Beautiful Mind–why such harsh comments? I for one am simply thrilled to see Helprin brought to the film medium.
This book takes my breath away every time I read it. Cinema-wise, t’s a bit like tackling “Garp” which turned out well for a longish book that got shoehorned into a feature film. Alas, “Winter’s Tale” it is on the scale of “Angels in America” but if it was HBO it’d be years before the general public saw it. This is a toughie, but as I understand it Helmrin is on Studio 360 this week talking about it – interesting to see if he’s run screaming from the project…
If at all possable the U.S. should adopt Jennifer brown Findlay and offer her the moon and any role she want’s,as much as i like to watch Downton Abbey i think it’s a wast of her time.On look’s alone she stand’s alone as the most beautiful woman/actress on our plant by far,and no one can bring so much acting skill to any roll.I belive the European world must be blind,Jennifer Brown Findlay’s talent is so natural she appear’s addict to her character and thus pure and priceless.
Whatever happened to Downton Abbey TV series? I have watched the 3rd season, and after that nothing else have come on Video!! i would like to see this interesting story to the end.
Can you please respond to me about what and where and when can I watch the 4th and beyond episodes??? I really want to see this story to the end.
Thank you,
