A reading took place last night in Los Angeles featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jane Lynch, Kevin Bacon and more for Oscar-winning writer Dustin Lance Black’s play 8 directed by Rob Reiner. It’s based on a 2010 case filed by the American Federation for Equal Rights in U.S. District Court to overturn California’s Proposition 8 that eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry. This footage begins with a real pro-Prop 8 ad then the play starts about a minute in:

Haha! More liberal-Hollywood bullshit. Gotta love it.
Bullshit? How so? Most of the dialogue is from real people and the events is real, so I’m not sure what exactly is “bullshit”. Or do you just disagree with the issue, so tried to blanket it with the “bullshit” tag, allowing yourself to disregard it? Or did you just not even watch the video?
Personally, I’m of the belief that if you say something, you should be able to stand by it and argue intelligently for it.
Yes – if “Liberal” means that I don’t believe that a magic man came down from the sky and told everyone that god hates gays – then yes count me as “liberal.”
It’s weird to me that so many Americans believe in magical thinking that leads to prejudice, and then accuse others who believe in science as “Liberal”. Since when did logic = liberal? And that’s a “bad” thing? Really?
Wow…ignorance is so normal, and yet is always shocking.
Liberal? These were court transcripts. Not fiction. Neither Liberal nor conservative, simply real life.
At long last the BS cast to the side, the emotion of the subject portrayed, the inclusion of being Homo sapiens and real live citizens of the U.S.A I already feel more American, more Mormon, more whole. The talent, their willingness and professionalism -thank you! The play brought some closure for me as to my struggle being mormon and gay through Prop 8. I almost wonder if the Mormon leaders wanted the matter pushed to this point, otherwise, if they accepted gays too early, they would have incurred the wrath of the christian right (which is neither). This has brought hope to a broken heart, and hope to a wrangled and abused and misunderstood people. Politicians are again using the gay community as a fear based ploy for votes this election – you’ve got my support as this moves forward to the Supreme Court – damn you guys are good!
I watched it last night. And have to admit I didn’t really know much about Prop8. I applaud all the actors involved and the writer. The performances were entertaining. And I learned a great deal. Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon and J C Riley were my favorites.
It was an interesting show.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed –
I, too, am American.
– LANGSTON HUGHES
The parts based on the transcript of the hearings were wonderful.
If they had been fiction, they would have been heavy-handed libel of the stupidity of people who oppose gay marriage. But they were the actual words, showing the very real stupidity of busybody Christian conservatives.
The parts of the show that veered from the transcript were cloying and very retro.
I don’t know….looks kind of gay.
Haha…I completely agree. And could not be more proud to be gay myself.
I cried. made me feel like i mattered. prevented a suicide…at least for now. also exposed the idiocy & bigotry of opponents. Also love seeing a gop bush lawyer working together with a dem. if only congress would do the same
Matteo, I certainly hope you’re not talking about your own suicide. If so, just know that there are always people who understand, people who you can talk to, no matter what your situation might be.
Everyone matters. Including you.
suicide? Seriously?
I am absolutely against gay marriage, but I am more against suicide. Everyone matters, every single person, despite our choices and lifestyles…every single one.
I loved it! So inspiring.. George Clooneys voice makes me squirm, I don’t know why I said that.
what does george clooney know about marriage
He didn’t write the script.
I certainly hope you’re not in the entertainment industry to write such a foolish post.
What am I saying? Of course you are!
As much as millions of other Americans who’ve been married once, it didn’t work out and they got divorced. But apparently that doesn’t mean *their* right to get married again should be taken away. Go figure.
He’s been married once already.
So obviously he knows enough to understand that getting married AGAIN is not his thing.
It’s interesting how topical most plays are. Very interesting and cool. But, I am against gay marriage. I’d never do anything. I have a lot of gay friends, but I would not vote for gay marriage. I think marriage is too important.
What the lawyer said at the end is the most important thing to remember… fear and prejudice were on trial and lost…
Sorry, maybe gay issues are really, really important to a small, comfortable, self-absorbed clique of Hollywood elites, but in the overall scheme of things that need to be addressed on this planet (the economy, Iraq and Afghanistan (with Iran and Syria next?), they’re just not a high priority for most people.
The whole play is great and Kudos to everyone involved. Clooney is just a truly upstanding and respectable person. When asked if the rumor that he was gay is true, he responded, “The last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, ‘These are lies!’ That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I’m not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing….One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black. People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side.”
Here here. To all those bigots on the wrong side, some day soon you will realize your true idiocy.
Kudos to everyone involved, you did a great job. The part where the kid from ‘Glee’ (can’t remember his name, I’m sorry) portrayed the young man who endured so much verbal abuse from his own mother was heartbreaking.
It blows my mind that anyone who claims to subscribe to beliefs about God and judgement would think they can say the horrific things she said to her own son and not be judged harshly herself. Saying she would have had an abortion if she’d known he was going to be gay?! Doesn’t exactly mesh with her supposed religious beliefs, now does it?
And it’s that…that right there, which absolutely infuriates me with religious fundamentalists. They try to sanctify their hate with ramblings about God, citing hand-picked scripture to prop up their prejudice. All the while conveniently ignoring other elements of the book they claim to hold dear, such as reserving judgement, and showing love and tolerance for your own child.
I loved Clooney’s interview in ‘The Advocate’, and his comparison of this fight for equality with racial segregation of the 1960′s. I agree with him that one day our society will look back on this era of marital segregation and be appalled at our own intolerance.
On a much, much lighter note…..I’m going to have to check Netflix tonight to see if they’re streaming “The West Wing”, because after his impassioned portrayal of the closing arguments, I want Martin Sheen for President, and only Aaron Sorkin can give me that.
The name of the “kid from Glee” is Chris Colfer.
