FX’s anthology drama series American Horror Story will be submitted as a miniseries for Emmy consideration. FX made an inquiry, and after The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards Committee and Board of Governors ruled that AHS is eligible for both the Drama Series and Miniseries categories, the network has opted to enter it as a mini. That will obviously increase the show’s chances for trophies as the drama series field will be crowded this season with the addition of Downton Abbey, which won the best movie/miniseries Emmy last year and has now moved to the best drama series category, and the return of Breaking Bad in Emmy contention. Of course, AHS co-star Jessica Lange, who already won a Golden Globe and a SAG Award in the drama series categories, is a frontrunner for an Emmy regardless of the field she is submitted in. Because of its anthology format, meaning new storylines, characters and cast each season, a season of AHS could be perceived as a miniseries/limited series.

It is surely a series because it is 12 episodes. Though here in the UK most TV series are about 6-8 episodes and in the US the networks have at least 22.
This means nothing. You can have a miniseries that’s 12 episodes long, or 22 episodes long, or even longer. If it’s a one time thing,it’s a miniseries.
Untill a couple of years ago, the norm here in Brazil was for miniseries to be 40+ episodes long ( aired daily ).
A lot more than 22. They only have that few if they get cancelled, not because anyone planned it that way.
FYI, a UK series = US Season
Bruce Rosenbloom appointed his good friend Ryan Murphy to the executive committee of the TV Academy Thursday night. It’s pretty obvious what’s going on.
I guess Ryan Murphy will be moving his overall deal to WBTV soon.
This is all glaringly obvious. It’s a genuine conflict of interest having this fellow as President of the Academy.
Makes sense.
I just don’t think it works at all. How is it a new cast when u take half of the old cast and change the names of their characters. It’s still the same cast.
So what if they are the same cast?
Doesn’t your imagination stretch that far?
It’s simple. This is what happened: Once FOX realized Ryan Murphy wasn’t talented enough of a writer to carry the failing story past 1 season, they had two choices—cancel it, or make up some BS about how the series was always supposed to be a revolving door to a new storyline each season. Same cast, but different characters? Laughable. It’s glaringly obvious the studio’s hands were tied because they signed the actors to multiple years, so they couldn’t fire them.
Not like this deserves any awards. What a turd.
An anthology series is not a mini-series. The show “American Horror Story” is returning in the fall. This is a major stretch with the sole intention of reaping more Emmy bids.
Nero Wolfe used to do this sort of thing every episode – have the same cast of actors play different characters. That wasn’t a miniseries every episode. The whole concept is silly.
Agreed. What about TRUE anthology series, like Steven Spielberg’s old “Amazing Stories”? Would that be eligible today in the mini-series category? This is screwy.
While I understand the move and it is fair, this isn’t going to help AHS win any awards.
The show itself, writing, directing, and acting (yes, even Lange) will not be able to compete with the big HBO/SHOWTIME/PBS mini-series that come out every year.
They would have had a better shot in the drama category. Lange will now lose.
@ Tyler…
Jessica Lange was the most riveting character on TV this season. The series as a whole was very entertaining and deserves any recognition it gets just for sustaining its entertainment value throughout its 13 episode run, find something on NBC that can say that.
What does NBC have to do with the quality of AHS? You don’t need to compare it to anything else that sucked. It sucked on its own real well. Utter tripe.
HAHAHAHAHA
Oh wait, you’re serious?
Doesnt matter How they enter it into The Razzies… it is sure to sweep.
FX are cheaters. It’s cheating, simple as that. It’s a drama series and everyone knows it. Wish Emmys snub them for this shameful move but don’t count on it.
This is a bullshit, coward’s move by people who are trying to game the system rather than have their show compete on the quality of their work. We all know it’s a series, so why let it compete as a miniseries? There will be a backlash against this by Emmy voters. This is a ridiculous ploy by people who know their show can’t compete with the best in their category.
Is Downton Abbey a miniseries?
No – now that it’s more than one season, it’s moved to being a regular series, the article said so.
