Exclusive Media has sealed a deal with the UK’s Dogwoof on the Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin-directed Oscar-winning documentary Undefeated. The film caused a stir at the Oscars when Martin uttered a swear word during his acceptance speech (the delay button caught it — he later apologized). The doc focuses on three underprivileged student athletes and the volunteer coach who guides them through a football season in North Memphis. Hip hop impresario Sean Combs boarded the film as an executive producer in February, just ahead of the Oscars. Exclusive’s documentary arm Spitfire Pictures and Zipper Bros Films produced the pic in association with Level 22 and Five Smooth Stones Productions. The Weinstein Co released Undefeated in the U.S. on February 17. Sales have also been concluded in Australia (Madman), Latin America (CDC) and Israel (United King) among others.

This could actually be a pretty good feature, but dear God — those filmmakers gave the most ungracious Oscar acceptance speech I’ve ever heard.
What a silly thing to say. The one utterance of profanity was in a moment of excitement and what was said was, “It would be f$#king amazing if all the other nominees could be up here with us.” Does it get any more gracious than that? And then they were cut off whilst thanking the Memphis community.
The ungraciousness had nothing to do with a naughty word. It had to do with the fact that a bunch of privileged white outsiders made a film about a marginalized and impoverished community of people of color, people who opened their lives and homes to these white out-of-town privileged filmmakers, and then when the film is recognized who do the filmmakers thank? Agents and financiers and other rich Hollywood people.
Pretty much your textbook definition of ungracious.
