The CW‘s pilot Arrow just released the first image of star Stephen Amell as (Green) Arrow. The suit was designed by three-time Oscar-winning costume designer and frequent Tim Burton collaborator Colleen Atwood (Alice In Wonderland). The project, written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, is based on the DC character and centers on former billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Amell) who, after being marooned for five years on a remote island, returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime. David Nutter, who also helmed the pilot for the Superman-themed series Smallville, is directing Arrow. “When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero,” Nutter said. “Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.” Berlanti, Guggenheim, Kreisberg and Nutter are executive producing the pilot for Warner Bros and Berlanti Prods. This costume tells me the show will be set in Palm Springs or West Hollywood. Ergo, my kind of show. Can’t wait!
I dunno, I think if you have Stephen Amell as you’re lead and you put this many articles of clothing on him you’re really missing an opportunity.
I would cast him as a man who is allergic to all fabrics. That would get a big rating in WeHo and like places.
So true.
BORING!!
I think this image is cool — moody and dark. Perfect. I’m in.
You can’t see crap in that picture. For all you know he could be wearing a pink tutu.
Not bad. Nothing to get crazy excited about, but the fact that it wasn’t terrible is already a step in the right direction Wonder Woman .
Why don’t they just take the final step, and create a Batman hour long drama???
WB won’t let them because they think it will interfere with the film franchise. They nearly forced Smallville off the air when Superman Returns was coming out.
How stupid. The new pilot “Gotham” could easily be the Smallville-style Batman TV show. The year before Bruce actually puts on the suit as chronicled in Batman Year One. I’d rather see that than another iteration of Green Arrow (who’s basically Batman anyway).
You mean you are not drowning already in batman mania.
Awesome! Looks like they nailed it! So hope this gets picked up!
But is he Dragonborn?
I don’t care for it or him at all.
Hahaha, look at his tiny bow!
I am sorry is this a pilot for Cinemax??? – Look at that picture. It is positively phallic!!!
Outfit looks awesome. Much better and more faithful than the Smallville version.
Liar.
2012 is shaping up to be the year of the archer: Katniss in THE HUNGER GAMES, Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS, the return of Legolas in THE HOBBIT, and now this. If only there was a new Robin Hood coming out this year.
Looks like they did their homework. Hoping for good things!
They should’ve went sleeveless with full length arm guards. Looks more unique and cooler. Also, ditch the leather pants for something more tactical.
He look like a green version of The Crap (I mean Cape), except he has an arrow.
I knew it.
I just had to click on the comments.
I looked at the picture and saw a barely visible suggestion of the costume and knew people would be slagging it off. How ridiculous.
Boring? Really? How? What would be less boring? Green spandex? Oh, wait, you probably don’t have the first clue about designing costumes. You are just good at poo-pooing stuff that other people create. Aren’t you tired, Miss Hilly Holbrook?
I’m sure Colleen Atwood will be sad you don’t like a costume she designed that you can barely make out in a dark photo.
That guy’s gonna shoot someone in the knee…
THE CAPE returns!!! (minus the actual cape)
Six Seasons and a Movie!
Uhh…from what I can (barely) see I guess it looks alright?
Trying to think of a “dark and edgy superhero” show that has ever worked…
Well, if anyone can do it, it’s Berlanti. He knows how to write for the genre better than anyone, and he…wait, what am I saying? Scratch that. It’s gonna be lame.
Breaking Bad!
Why no Justin Hartley? I’m sure this new guy is fine, but there was already a significant investment by the actor and by the fans in that particular Green Arrow.
Justin Hartley has another show with a pilot ordered for CW as the male lead (“First Cut” I believe). We’ll see if it actually gets on the air, but I have my fingers crossed for him.
He was also the one with his portrayal in Smallville that got me to read Green Arrow. Which could be why my first thought wasn’t on the actor but “Oooh. Recurve bow!” Considering comic-Green Arrow about wouldn’t have been caught dead with some of the “toys” SV-GA had.
Because this new series has nothing to do with that lame show Smallville. The fans don’t know what they are talking about and Justin Hartley doesn’t seem to be losing any sleep
This has everything to do with Smallville idiot. It is only being made because of Smallville. Did you wander onto an industry site by accident?
Get me my coffee.
Green Arrow is just a character, OK. Some of you forget these people are acting sometimes, they get paid for this and go home to be their real selves. Justin has moved on, the moment he worked out of that smallville door, he had dusted those leather pants, ready to be something else. He fancies a white coat now. He cant be Green Arrow forever, they will be many after him.
So quit acting like you own him or the character.
Guy with bow and arrow vs. guy with gun.
Guy with bow and arrow always loses.
Somewhat of a relief. The Green Arrow on Smallville was ridiculous and too clean-cut (I think I am in the minority of that opinion). This seems more inclined to the current comic universe and the Nolan effect has had on the DC universe.
I see facial hair, which is a plus. Oliver Queen/Green Arrow needs that goatee.
I can’t believe DC let the writers of GREEN LANTERN anywhere near this. It’s like they are begging for the show to fail. And it is such an easy sell concept too. A character that has expanded his live actin fanbase on a hit show for the very network they are trying to sell to. It’s a Slam Dunk pickup. Then they go and shoot themselves in the foot with the writers of GREEN LANTERN. Somebody at DC must really not want this show to happen, to undermine it this way.
Actually, they’re the writers of early drafts of Green Lantern. The script that was actually filmed was one rewritten by Michael Goldenberg.
I predict this show will get picked up, based on CW’s hope of replicating Smallville’s success. I also predict that Arrow will die a quick and miserable death ala The Cape and No Ordinary Family. It’s a tough genre to crack. There have been very few successes.
Wait a minute. Wasn’t Berlanti also behind No Ordinary Family? Dear God, what could possibly go wrong with Berlanti behind yet another superhero property?
