EXCLUSIVE: Fox 2000 and Twilight Saga producers Temple Hill Productions have set Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber to adapt The Fault In Our Stars, the John Green novel. This comes after the duo handed in Royal Wedding, the seven-figure pitch they sold to Sony Pictures with Matt Tolmach producing.
The book focuses on two teens who strike up a relationship, even though they both have situations no teenager should have to contemplate, Hazel, 16, has terminal cancer, when she meets Augustus at her kids-with-cancer support group. Despite facing their own mortality, they bolster each other’s spirits with humor as they bravely face an uncertain future. The novel was published to high acclaim by Dutton Juvenile in January. Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce.
It’s the second adaptation the writers have done for Fox 2000, after Rosaline. The scribes are repped by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.

Didn’t Gus Van Sant make this film last year and it was called RESTLESS? Or was it that JGL/Seth Rogan film I’m thinking about, 50/50? Or what about IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY?
50/50 was the best of the bunch, but they were older. Are teens really going to watch a movie about teens with cancer?
You’d make a great terrible exec. Congratulations! You win!
Well…since it’s been on the NYT children’s best seller list…with multiple weeks at number 1 (I don’t know where it is currently) and John Green has a HUGE, and rabidly devoted fan base, I think that yes, teens WILL go see a movie about teens with cancer.
I quite enjoy the phrase rabidly devoted, it expresses us so well.
I agree
No, this is based on an amazing book called the Fault in Our Stars. And even though a recurring theme in this book is cancer, It is still a beautiful story.
Well they sure read a book about teens with cancer, and it was amazing. It mightn’t be your cup of tea, but John Green is an amazing and writes stories with morals and incredible depth. If the screenplay is anything like the book, people will watch it.
Obviously you haven’t read the book. It’s a young adult story that has captured the hearts of many teenagers across the country. You might want to go out and pick up the book. It’s puts other books to shame.
Correction: It has captured the hearts of many teenagers across the world.
Love from Norway
Yes they will, for this age group is simply obsessed with this book.
Read the book and then comment on the plot.
It’s not your typical cancer book by a mile.
Just because multiple stories are about cancer does not mean they are all the same story. Try reading the novel before you play it up as something similar to those other films, or something that teens won’t enjoy watching.
I don’t believe i’ve seen that one. The Fault In Our Stars was a wonderful book, and you would be surprised to know how many teens and adults (like myself) found this book amazing! There are quite literally thousands of people that have read and love this book! I’m excited for the movie!!
The Fault in Our Stars was #1 on the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble bestseller lists in June 2011 before the book was even published. It was #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list for Children’s Chapter books for seven consecutive weeks and it is at the #2 spot now. I really do think teens are going to watch a movie about teens with cancer.
All of the teens who read the book will.
…As will many of the adults.
Considering the book it’s based on has been at the top of the New York Times best-seller’s list for more than two months now, I’d say teens will watch it.
Teens read the book, didn’t they?
Also, Green has a MASSIVE cult following of his vlog and other books, which practically guarantees good box office numbers.
You really don’t know much about John Green’s audience. Trust me, they will come.
Yes they will watch a movie about cancer with teens. You have to think about how John Green as a writer has a large fanbase and said fanbase has been waiting for a movie, for any of his books, for a longggg time.
It’s Kind of a Funny story is not about teens with Cancer……
The Fault In Our Stars is a best selling book and John Green is an award winning author. I don’t know if teens are going to watch a movie about two teens with cancer but they are sure reading about it. I for one extremely enjoyed the book and I can’t wait to see its movie adaptation.
I think you underestimate this book. It already has a huge worldwide fandom, has topped the times best seller list for teen books for weeks but more importantly its not really a book about cancer, its about the relationship between the characters. If it gets made, and made well, it could be huge.
This book, although only being released not long ago has a massive teen fan base behind it and has been very successful. If the movie plays out like the book, which it better, yes teens will. Word of mouth will play a big role I think.
To me the book is more like, ‘oh, these teens are in love, but they also have cancer’ not, ‘oh these teens have cancer, but are also in love’.
I don’t think any of that made sense. Read the book, its good.
Well, the book was on the NYT best sellers list for weeks, so they will certainly READ about teens with cancer
You got served!
It’s very different from all books/movies you mentioned. I read this book the day it came out and let me tell you it is amazing. It’s not just some book about kids with cancer, it’s so much more. To truly understand you simply must read the book for yourself. If you enjoy anything remotely close to amazing quality and a truly amazing story, you will read this book. The Fault in Our Stars is amazing. This coming from a guy who HATES cancer books.
The book was number one on the New York Times Best Seller list for seven weeks straight. So my guess would be yes, teens ARE really going to see a movie about teens with cancer.
Well, many teens have already read the book and have raved about the novel, so yes, they probably will go see the movie. Also, just because other movies have covered the topic of cancer doesn’t mean that this movie will be like those. Childhood cancer is even more taboo to talk about than adults who have cancer, so it’s nice to see a book/movie that wants to tell everyone that it’s okay to mention it in front of kids, that they understand what’s happening to them if they have it, and it’s also okay to have a little fun while dealing with it.
P.S. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is about depression, not cancer. I know; I read the book.
This book was number one on the New York Times bestseller list for seven weeks, and since then has been number two on that list for three more. It was number one on Amazon and Barnes & Noble best seller lists and the Wall Street Journal one too. Clearly teens are willing to read books about teens with cancer, so why wouldn’t they watch movies about them?
Yes, because it is a phenomenal book. You laugh with it, cry with it, and love like they do. It’s not just about cancer. That’s just a detail. It’s about love. Words can’t explain who good John Green’s writing is. The movie will most likely be great and watched by many.
I believe people would watch it. The book has been very successful and people who enjoyed the book would likely want to see the movie. Also, they only just picked these people to write it, which means it still has to be written, cast, filmed, produced, etc. It is still is in the early stages and may not even happen at all, we can’t say for certain yet. If the movie does proceed it will still be a considerable amount of time before it comes out, so the other films will be a little farther back in our memory. Finally, I would just like to point out that yes, the main characters are teens with cancer, but that is not what the story is about. The story does not solely focus on their disease, it focuses on the lives of these two young adults and all of their trials and tribulations, cancer just happens to be a big one.
hell yes we are.. If you read the book ( which you should) you will fall in love plus over 150000 people per-ordered and have read the book and millions follow the writer so yeah we’ll watch it.
Of course they will. It was largely teenagers wanting to read content like this that made the book from which this movie is being adapted the #1 best-selling item on Amazon.com for four days straight. The book is wildly popular and, having read it, I can testify that it is incredibly powerful, stunningly beautiful, and immensely well-written. If this story ever hits the silver screen, you can bet that I’ll be at the closest midnight premiere I can find.
John Green has a massive teen fanbase and his book topped the NYT Best Seller’s list for five weeks straight. As a devoted Green fan and an avid “TFiOS” lover, I will not hesitate to see this movie and I recommend the book to anyone, young adult or not.
Yes, actually, they will. Why do you think movies like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Twilight all did so well in the box office? Because of their huge teen fanbases.
This book came out on the 10th of January, so it can’t have been produced last year. And John Green is a brilliant author, who can add humour to the most serious of cases whilst addressing various and interesting concepts.
The book is about more than just cancer; it’s about love, friendships and relationships.
Before you assume that, read the book. It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s much different from restless and 50/50. It’s about teenagers, it’s about cancer, but mostly it’s about life. You can never get enough of movies about life.
Um, yes. This book is so unbelievably popular right now. And will be for years to come. John Green is a phenomenal writer who has a huge fan base. This is one of my favorite books in the world now, and just because it’s sad and about cancer in no way makes me not want to see the movie. That comment is an insult to the maturity levels of my generation. Of course there are plenty of kids who do lack the maturity level to enjoy and appreciate it, but there are plenty who don’t. Read the book before you judge.
A) This book was published in January, so it was obviously not based on any other books or movies.
B) The Hunger Games. Harry Potter. Twilight. Others have already said it, and they are right. Teenagers are already fans of this book, so a movie about it would definitely attract an audience.
actually, yes. anyone that has read this book will watch the movie.. john green in a genius and this is a great story that needs to be shared.
Yeah, you are right that this story has been done before but that doesn’t take away from the power of this story. Just because the fact that romeo and juliet ends with both of them dead doesn’t make Othello any less enjoyable or any of his other tragedies that end the same way. And by the way I thought Restless was the best movie out of the bunch but I love all of them.
You have obviously never heard of the vast population of Nerdfighteria Island
Well the novel was #1 on the best seller list for quite a while — so I dont see why not (it was pretty awesome, you should give it a read!)
Read the book before you say that this will be like every other movie about cancer. It’s about so much more than teens with cancer.
Dude, just because the film is about cancer doesn’t mean it’s the same story! It’s a fantastic book!!
I’ve read the book, and I loved it. Yet I’m a bit hesitant as to whether or not I want it to become a movie. I’ll probably see it though. John Green, the author, has a huge fan base, so yes, teens really are going to watch a movie about teens with cancer. Mainly because it addresses concerns everyone has about their own mortality and whether or not a person can leave a mark on this world.
Well, yes, all of these films are similar – but definitely not the same. And i can tell you one thing: everyone who read the book will watch the film. Which means: lots of people.
They better not mess this up! John Green has a huge nerdfighter following, way too many to disappoint if they get this wrong. It has the potential to be absolutely amazing just like the book!
Yes they will because John Green is flawless
This is a great novel, if you haven’t read it. It’s entirely worthy of being made into a movie, and I know it’s going to draw in a decent crowd, because John Green is a fantastic author with many readers.
I will definitely be watching this! The book was incredible, and I can’t wait to see it on the big screen.
You’ve obviously have never read the book if that’s what you have to say about it. John Green is a spectacular writer. There’s more to the story than just “teens with cancer.” Read the book before you jump to such bold conclusions.
Funny Story is awesome, totally underrated, and also happens to have nothing to do with cancer. This book is good too.
I can’t wait
This movie is going to be EPIC
Gus van sant could not have made this film last year the book wasn’t released until january 2012.
Soooo. Someone definitely linked this post to John Green fans… sheesh…
Here’s hoping they don’t ruin it; I’ve heard good things. And, surprise, yes – there can be more than one movie about cancer.
Hee hee we’re very respectful of John Green and we don’t spoil his books for him (usually). We know how nice it is do discover a book by yourself. Don’t worry too too much.
The book was great! So excited for the movie!!!! Dftba!
I’m so, so scared that movie won’t live up to the book. I loved the book so much. I’ve never laughed and cried so much at a book, I just really hope it portrays well on camera!
I desperately want to be involved with this project
I won’t even compare John Green’s to 50/50. 50/50 was kinda disappointing basing on what a motivational cancer movie would or should have been. Looking forward to this one tho!
Oh, and what kind of pretentious jackwagon tells potential readers “don’t bore me”? Honestly!
Yeah! Way to go John!
Wow, another movie about young people with cancer. Good luck getting an ass to fill a seat in the theatre with that movie playing.
If John Green is excited about this, I guess I have to be, but soooo nervous. Millions will be devastated if it isn’t just perfect. The pressure is on!
As a 17 year old who has read this book twelve times, I can tell you that I will be in the theatre watching this film, as will the thousands of other John Green fans. This books has touched millions of people, as have all of John Green books. It’s not a “cancer book” or a “cancer movie” because those suck. It’s a book about life and love and Amsterdam a girl named Hazel who feels in-between and a boy named Augustus who wants to leave his mark on the world. Keep calm and Don’t forget to be awesome.
Oh course we will see the movie.
Go look up sales on the book that this movie is based on.
We are all reading it. Why on earth wouldn’t we watch it!?
