UPDATE: Channing Tatum’s rep said that he does not plan to star in the film at all, only produce.
EARLIER: Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor will direct Neverland, the Billy Ray-scripted film that takes a new look at J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The project is at Sony, and Channing Tatum is attached to star and produce with his partner Reid Carolin under their Iron Horse banner. The pair hatched the project together, and they brought in Ray and enlisted fairy tale go to guy producer Joe Roth, and they sold the pitch to Sony. Palak Patel is also producing. The film, described to me as an origin story of Peter Pan and Hook, rides the wave of revisionist tales after the Roth-produced Alice in Wonderland, and the craze continues with the Snow White pics Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman.
All this comes at a good time for the movie, as Tatum has become a bonafide up and coming star after The Vow, and that is expected to be enhanced with tomorrow’s opening of 21 Jump Street. Tatum’s repped by UTA and Management 360.
O’Connor, who directed the U.S. Olympic hockey team saga Miracle for Disney, directed one of the true gems of 2011 in Warrior, which was unfortunately sold by Lionsgate as a mixed martial arts film when it was a thoughtful father-son story that contained terrific performances by Oscar-nominated Nick Nolte, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. Too bad not many people saw it. O’Connor will supervise the next draft of the script by Ray, who scripted the Paul Greengrass-directed Captain Phillips Somali pirate project that Tom Hanks is starring in, and The Thin Man remake for Johnny Depp, an original project for JJ Abrams. He also scripted the 24 movie that will likely be postponed until next year. O’Connor and Ray are repped by CAA, Ray also by 360 Management.

Agreed. Warrior was brilliant.
I think it’s a mistake that Channing Tatum isn’t starring in this. He clearly has female appeal. He should do a big romantic comedy next. Something comedic and higher concept that builds him a broader audience. If he sticks to the movies he’s doing, the youth market might outgrow him.
Yeah, I absolutely loved WARRIOR. It would have done a lot better if Weinstein or Fox Searchlight had distributed it.
Didn’t work so well with Robin Hood.
Gavin is a true talent and a super guy to work with. Congrats!
Indeed. Gavin made an incredible film in WARRIOR and is one of the most loyal and hard-working guys in the business. Hope he knocks this out of the park.
I loved both WARRIOR and MIRACLE. I will definitely see this.
Enough with fairy tales!! No one will want to see this after al the other ones. And does no one remember Joe Roth already made a bad Peter Pan movie at Revolution for Sony once before?
CHANNING TATUM IS CAPTAIN HOOK
Sorry, this sounds like a headline from The Onion’s entertainment reporter.
I believe I saw this on Syfy, a Peter Pan and Hook origin tale called Neverland.
Seriously? You know, Hollywood, I would pay to see some good stories and original characters again. But it seems those days are long gone.
There already exists a very successful “official” sequel to the original “Peter Pan”, specially commissioned by the Great Ormond Street Childrens’ Hospital, the copyright holders of JM Barrie’s classic. It was written by Geraldine McCaughrean and published by Oxford University Press in 2006. It explores the complex relationship between Peter Pan, Capt. Hook (who turns out to be an Old Etonian, and not such a bad chap after all!) the Lost Boys and, of course, Wendy. It may not strictly be revisionist, but it’s certainly a very well crafted and dark take on the original characters, and on Neverland itself.
