UPDATE, 11:16 PM: The 24 movie postponement broken by Deadline this morning is getting interesting. Word is racing around agency circles that Kiefer Sutherland was not only unhappy about the pic’s postponement, but also what I’d heard was a $1 million offer to play Jack Bauer in a deal that was heavily back-loaded to reward success. Insiders said that Sutherland would have gotten at least $2 million, though that was below his original $5 million and then $3 million ask. Fox wanted a budget around $30 million, while the filmmakers wanted $45 million to $60 million. Fox’s idea was always to make the film at a cost, and reward in the upside. The studio’s proposal, made a couple weeks ago, wasn’t addressed until this week, and when the crap hit the fan yesterday, the studio felt there wasn’t enough time to pull the picture off in seven weeks of prep. The studio was following its experience with X-Files, a TV property turned into a hit film, but made at a cautious budget. I’m told that Fuqua’s deal hadn’t been made yet. Sutherland, Imagine and Fuqua stood to reap up to about 25% of the proceeds after breakeven, to make up for the low upfront payments. I reached out for comment to Sutherland and Imagine this morning, but no one returned yet.
EARLIER EXCLUSIVE, 7:40 AM: I’m hearing that fans of the Fox series 24 are going to have to continue waiting for the long-awaited 24 feature film. 20th Century Fox isn’t going forward with the film this year. It hadn’t been greenlit, but it was scheduled to get going in late March, with Kiefer Sutherland jumping into Jack Bauer mode when his new series Touch goes on hiatus in April. The studio was zeroing in on a director — Antoine Fuqua was the most recent conversation I’d heard of — when the decision was made this week to not go forward, at least this year.
There are rumors this came down to budget and that Sutherland is upset because he was sparked up to resume his role as the rough-and-tumble government operative, who over eight seasons prevented numerous apocalyptic terror attacks. Studio insiders tell me Fox wasn’t convinced it had enough time to complete the film before Sutherland has to go back to work on Touch‘s second season, and didn’t want to rush and neither did Sutherland. The picture is being produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Sutherland and they have a script written by Billy Ray, and polished by Mark Bomback. It’s ready to go.
The big question is whether Fox will continue working on the film and readying it for Sutherland’s next hiatus. Having been a big fan of the series, I am disappointed. I’ve heard that Ray constructed the script to play out in a three-picture arc. Maybe it was the real-time format, or perhaps the writing and endless cliffhangers, but the twists and turns and intensity created a blood pressure-spiking viewer experience that was unmatched — at least until AMC unveiled The Walking Dead. It seems a natural transition to features, with the potential to turn into a Die Hard-type action franchise.
Giving the picture some hope is Grazer’s inability to take no for an answer. American Gangster was scrapped and then came back together and turned into a memorable crime drama. And Grazer, Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Stephen King are now firming up a deal for The Dark Tower at Warner Bros, which will put the picture on course to begin production in the first quarter of 2013 after Universal last year rejected the ambitious plan to make three movies and two limited-run TV series that could land at HBO.

I’m a 24 fanatic, but my god can they just let this die please? All characters we care about (except Jack) are dead. So unless they plan on doing a prequel sometime prior to Season 5 and bring back some fan favorite characters – Operation Nightfall, anyone? – then forget it. The last 3 season of the series were definitely the weakest.
And despite those weak final seasons, the show ended on as high a note as it could have. No reason to ruin that.
But Jack and Chloe yet live! Those two characters, the ruthless killer and the girl nerd, it’s an endlessly interesting relationship.
This item was well–written, maybe it will shame someone into action. With a reasonable budget, this project seems like a no-brainer. You could greenlight this and sleep like a baby.
Chloe was still alive. You don’t care about her? Charles Logan is still alive, albeit in lousy shape when we last saw him. You don’t care about him?
So 2 (or 2.5, counting the Charles “coma” Logan) out of 10 amazing characters are still alive. Not enough for me to want to watch a film. Again, the last 3 seasons were such a wash that I was glad when it finally ended.
Why didn’t you stop watching at 3 season? There must have been something that kept pulling you back.
Jack, Chloe, Kim, and Chase can all return.
“Sutherland, Imagine and Fuqua stood to reap up to about 25% of the proceeds after BREAKEVEN…”
DON’T DO IT, GUYS! EVEN HARRY POTTER HASN’T HIT ‘BREAKEVEN’ AT WARNERS, AND THEY MADE OVER 8 BIL ON THOSE PICS.
PS Eddie Murphy didn’t call them “Monkey points” for nothing! What a joke, the idea that anyone would believe a studio ever hits Breakeven…. how dumb do the suits think we are? Well, pretty dumb, alright.
Chloe pouts at you.
<strong**spoilers!**
I don’t believe there’s practically anyone arguing for season 6, but I strongly disagree with you on seasons 7 and 8. Creatively, these two series had some fantastic ideas. White House breach in S7 with strong character tensions as well as an intriguing storyline with Tony.
S8 also had some great new ideas, with emotional Jack and finally taking revenge.
I’m not saying the seasons were totally original (like the bug on Logan in S8), but I’ll be damned if they were the weakest. I wasn’t a particular fan of season 4, to be honest.
(Good) Tony is one of my favorite characters. I took serious issue with the writers flat out lying to the audience and cheating continuity to bring Tony back from the dead because they realized how much they fucked up by killing him off.
In the beginning of the S6 scene where Jack states Tony is dead, Renee says “The paramedics rushed him away from the scene. You never saw what happened!” Uhm, excuse me? I vividly remember the beginning of the episode after Tony died, they made it a point to include the shot of someone verrrrry slowly zipping up a body bag clearly showing Tony in it, dead.
The first five seasons of ’24′ were pure television gold, the last three damn good overall, but creators Joel Surnow and Robert Cochrane should have kept hold of showrunning duties instead of handing over to Howard Gordon, and made the sixth season the final season, with the movie following soon afterwards, that way, the series would have went out on top and chances are they would have had a bigger budget for the eventual movie…
What a tragedy……it’s amazing how Kiefer who was offered $2mill up front won’t do the moving unless he gets $3mill up front, well if your too greedy, you’ll get $0…. what morons! Jack Bauer could even do the match, but aparently Keifer Southerland can’t!
It’s easy for us to sit back and say “Oh, he’s being greedy because he wants an extra million dollars to do the movie.” It may all seem so glorious what actors and actresses do, they make movies/television and get paid TONS of money for doing so, but they work incredibly hard for that money too. Kiefer puts in around 16 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week doing a film or a television show. It’s not easy, filming is grueling, hard work. Kiefer made millions and MILLIONS of dollars for Fox doing 24 for 8 seasons, if they’re not willing to pay him what he wants, which in the grand scheme of things, is NOT that much, especially to a big network like Fox, then it’s THEIR bad, not his. The guy worked his ass off for 10 years doing 24, and Fox can’t even show him the decency and respect he deserves by greenlighting the movie he seriously wants to make, and pay him what he deserves.
Kiefer’s not in the wrong here, Fox is. He’s a genuine guy, he works incredibly hard, he’s not at fault for wanting the money he earns. I’d be pissed too and I’d feel dissed just as I’m sure Kiefer does.
If The Walking Dead causes your blood pressure to spike, you need to see a doctor.
You are so cool.
Maybe it was the real-time format, or perhaps the writing and endless cliffhangers, but the twists and turns and intensity created a blood pressure-spiking viewer experience that was unmatched-at least until AMC unveiled The Walking Dead.
Have you actually seen The Walking Dead. That show is entertaining in it’s action packed episodes but the rest of it is a steaming pile of crap as it utterly fails in being a character drama.
I guess that’s why The Walking Dead continues to shatter cable viewer ratings records. Shatter. It’s such a great steaming pile of ooey goodness, we can’t wait for Season 3!
Brian Grazer is a laser light-show phenomenon. This movie will get made. Period.
This is a shame for everyone. Make the 24 movie, 20th, and stop producing garbage like Marmaduke.
Bring back Agent Ed Miller!!…he never died!
Agent Baker should also return…he was awesome in S3.
Behrooz should also have a cameo.
I’ve always been against a 24 movie. It violates everything that the series stood for – 44 minutes of real time action in 24 episodes that equates to one day. A movie can’t accomplish that without braking the rules of it’s concept, unless they plan to make 12 2 hour movies.
If the movie takes place within a 24 hour period, it doesn’t violate anything. The actual seasons never lasted any longer than 16 hours, so this will simply be 24 in movie format. Kinda like Redemption, only that took place over 2 hours.
I’m disappointed the film won’t take place in real time, but I guess it can be equated to simply longer gaps of time, like the commercial breaks that existed in the series. I hope the iconic clock will remain however, and it will be confined to one day.
wait, touch is starting (finally) this week and it’s already on hiatus in april? and networks wonder why people don’t watch as much tv anymore.
No, you misread it. Touch will go on production hiatus in April after the season wraps.
Okay, I enjoy THE WALKING DEAD very much but do not compare it with 24. It is not blood pressure boil twist and turn entertainment. 24 was a completely different show. Apples and oranges. I am so sad to hear the movie is stalled.
24 is one of the few shows that really deserves a good movie and could get one.
And although I enjoyed the ‘Redemption’ prequel, I think it was lacking in the pressure and excitement that the actual episodes included. If they made a movie, there would need to be more excitement and action while keeping the character development that every single episode had.
This is practically impossible just because of the time format and the fact that there are no commercial breaks (the only show to make me enjoy commercials).
I wouldn’t be surprised if this falls through or worse: a bad movie is made out of it.
Very disappointing news. But I can’t say I’m surprised. It would have been a major rush job, especially since we’re already in March and the studio hasn’t officially greenlit the movie yet or hired a director. With Sutherland’s hiatus window being approximately 3 months (If Touch gets renewed), it would have been a really tight shoot for principal photography without much time for pre-production.
I hope they will hire someone (Fuqua is fine with me) and greenlight the film later this year and at least get some decent pre-production time for Fall/Winter. Then when Sutherland’s next window opens opens up in 2013, they can get going.
Could you tell us who your source was at FOX who told you this?
Seriously?
Yes. We would like to know.
It’s probably that evil ginger woman.
Aw, that sucks. Big fan of 24. The film is not necessary per say, episode 8.24 is a proper series finale with a dark ending (which I loved), but I was interested in seeing how it would play out on the big screen. Well, Jack, see you in late 2013/early 2014 then.
The idea of planning a trilogy is nice. After all, the eight days of this show were constructed in trilogies as well. I may be too optimistic but I hope they won’t dumb things down and make a random, forgettable action movie.
It’s too bad Robert Cochran, David Fury or Howard Gordon are not involved in the writing process, but Ray/Bomback are good writers. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day!) was a great choice. Still hoping for Stephen Hopkins to direct that 24 movie though, we would come full circle since he directed 12 episodes in season 1.
If Touch flops and gets cancelled, does that mean the movie could be shot this Spring? Because apparently it seems that the tight schedule with Touch (and the apparent will of FOX to make it come back for a full second season next September) is the only thing getting in the way.
In my opinion, 24 is so much better than The Walking Dead, by the way. If you want a new show to sustain the lack of 24, there’s Homeland, which is terrific. Awake recently started, it looks ambitious and promising as well. All three shows have Howard Gordon in common (showrunner of seasons 5-8 of 24 and showrunner of these two great new shows). Sleeper Cell, Rubicon, Day Break and The Shield are highly recommendable to 24 fans as well.
Billy Ray’s script was a droning repetitive torture-fest. Jack’s been hiding out, Jack gets spotted. People try to kill Jack. Jack hurts people to find out why.
No one can be trusted. Everyone betrays Jack. Those fucks.
And we’ll set in a country with a tax break! Let’s go make the fucker…
Unless Bomback was doing a lot more than polishing, this script was not ready to go. At all.
Maybe they just quit trying to fool themselves. This was a deal, not a movie from the get go.
This movie should be Mission Impossible. If they don’t feel that they can make it properly right now, then they are right to wait until they can. It could be a great movie franchise but if it’s done poorly it would be such a disservice to the show and its fans. If it really would have been a rush job, then it’s probably a good thing that cooler heads prevailed.
I’m very disapointed I want my Jack Back DAMNIT !!!!!
Can’t we just roll this thing into the Arrested Development revival?
Bring back that crazy-ass “24″ meets “Die Hard” concept that FOX was throwing around…
So THAT interesting nugget finally escaped Tom Rothman’s inner sanctum? I heard it was called something silly like “Die Hard 24-7.” The moment of insanity passed.
Once again why is it the hurry up and wait mentality when it comes to making movies — it has become less about the creative aspect of getting the right script/actors/director in order and more about fitting into a specific start time and release date. This is something droves of 24 fans would LOVE to finally see come to light. Waiting another year is just gonna make it worse.
Seems to me that if anything, the extra year will allow for more time in creative development.
I’m a huge fan of Jack Bauer, but with MI:4 out there now and the Bourne Legacy coming (I discount the next Bond film as they lost me with the horrible Quantum of Solace), as well the Bush/Cheney Patriot Act/torture era over (although we’re still living in the aftermath, and will for the next 20 years at least), maybe 24′s time is done. Not to mention 24fan’s assertion that a 90 min movie goes against the core concept of 24 to begin with.
Tony Scott in full-on experimental Man on Fire mode would have been the shit as director (Enemy of the State was 24 way before the actual TV show), although I have no probs with brother Fuqua. Too bad.
Chloe is NOT dead! And she is the best character on 24 (other than Jack of course!)
I am going to torture all the Fox execs until they beg for mercy and give my movie a greenlight. Fear the wrath of Bauer. I’m gearing up to storm the studio I’m on my way you have one hour in real time since I’m currently in San Diego on my way back from Mexico where I killed 75 members of a cocaine cartel and we all know events occur in real time damn this traffic but I will be there soon so you better be ready.
$30M movie? $1M for Sutherland? Fox is cheap…
Disney seems to be the only studio spending real money. It’s too bad their bets are not turning out that well, because it will encourage the others to continue their tightwad ways.
Very disappointing news. Yes, I, too, am a diehard “24″ fan and Kiefer Sutherland has just finished a global tour communicating the important and significant message about the new “Touch” series. This tour did a great sevice for Fox to promote the new series and then Kiefer essentially gets a slap in the face with regard to “24″. What’s up with FOX?
Adam Sandlers Jack and Jill cost $80 mil and Fox only want to go $30 for a 24 feature. Thats no money at all. Stunning. By the way I agree AMC’s The Walking Dead is every bit as great as 24.
The X-Files “hit film” was the first one that came out when the show was still on. The second X-Files movie barely broke even. Fox should take a hint and make this now or forget about it — absence does not make the heart grow fonder when it comes to continuing TV plot lines in films!
IWTB did not barely break even. It’s original budget was only 30M. It brought in more than double that. It isn’t what the studio expected, but it didn’t “barely break even” either.
