2ND UPDATE: In a statement, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals applauded HBO’s decision to end Luck. ”Knowing that old, unfit, and drugged horses were forced to race for this series, PETA is glad that HBO has finally decided to cancel the show,” PETA said. The organization noted that it had urged the show’s producers “to use stock racing footage instead of endangering horses for entertainment purposes” and said that it “has called on law enforcement to investigate the deaths of the horses used on the set and to bring charges as appropriate.”
UPDATED: Luck will be no more on HBO. The pay cable network, along with Luck executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann, just announced that they’re ending the series following yesterday’s horse death, the third on the set of the horse racing drama starring Dustin Hoffman. Luck had been in the middle of production on the second episode of Season 2. The recently completed first episode won’t air. Meanwhile, the remaining two episodes of Luck‘s first season will air as scheduled, with the season finale serving also as a series finale. In the immediate aftermath of yesterday’s horse death, HBO initially said that production on Luck will continue with scenes that don’t involve horses. Now the stoppage will encompass the entire production. As of the time of HBO’s announcement, filming on the series was still underway, with the cast and crew unaware of the decision, but was expected to shut down immediately.
After drawing a modest 1.1 million viewers for each of the pilot episode’s two premiere airings, in December and then again in January, Luck has slipped in the ratings, logging 686,000 viewers for its most recent first-run episode. However, ratings were never the deciding factor in determining the series’ fate — the mounting horse deaths simply became too much of a liability and a PR nightmare for the network. Luck is a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling’s denizens – owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers. Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte led the cast, which also included Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy. Milch and Mann executive produced with Carolyn Strauss. Here is the statement announcing the end of the series:
It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck.
Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.
We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.
Quote from Michael Mann and David Milch: “The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers. This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future.”

WHAT THE? :O
Great news, this show was a snoozefest.
Agreed. I put on 3 separate times and, each time, kept finding myself doing something else (i.e., something more compelling, you know, like washing dishes).
Some people like their coffee black.
I gave the show 3 chances and then stopped watching it–terribly boring. And now this with these poor horses. What a bunch of pigs.
This was a wonderful production seeing REAL people living their lives in a tough business. It is too bad about horses, no need for that, for sure! It was deep at times, but made a person think about what was really happening. People dealing with addictions is a major disease in our world and this was bring some attention in a real way, along with some very clever, quit wit.
Thanks for what we had!
You didn’t watch the series because it was great.
David Milch –wildly overrated.
steve – wildly jealous.
Cancelled was “Luck”.
“What now?” do we ask.
I don’t know why they do not just shift the show to a casino setting and leave the horse racing. They could take Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farino and Jason gedrick and a couple others from the existing cast and I think they coud make it work. Might even be a better show.
and two horses died during the filming of that movie flica they are just very fragile animals a half ton on skinny legs
reboot with greyhounds?
Reboot with the Kardashians! Woo-hoo!!
From your lips…
From Dr. Carl Jung in heaven. ‘You have my sympathies guys. You should try it next time with the horses who have been spoken to by a psychic – horse whisperer – and asked if they mind that kind of close running together. You would find it easy enough to get a group of horses that can attune to it and so no more accidents. Dr. Jung said he finds it irritating that this world is so slow to incorporate the official use of psychic to help it move forward.
No excuse for deaths of animals. That said it is a wonderful series that in my opinion introduced as a subplot the spiritual side of horses.
One horse would have been a tragic accident. Three horses is pure negligence. I grew up working at Saratoga Springs every summer, in the backside, with the horses. Thoroughbreds shouldn’t be used in this way.
But racing them is okay? I grew up going to Saratoga as well, but your argument is flawed.
Ironic outcome given that cruelty is an inherent part of the horse racing industry. Thousands of horses are bred every year for the sport, and most end up abandoned, dead or abused. Thoroughbreds are raced young before their bones are strong enough to stand the strain and nightmarish injuries like on-the-track fractures are common. They’re drugged up to run, and the stress causes gastric ulceration and pulmonary bleeding. A horse that runs slow, is injured or just exhausted is then abandoned to a slaughterhouse.
“But racing them is okay?”
You do what you can and you don’t throw up your arms by pointing to another problem.
Or, in your case, you don’t let off one bad act by pointing to another that people don’t seem to object to. That’s a recipe for doing nothing in any area. You can always find some other similar bad situation. So what.
I’m kinda surprized the track itself didn’t pay closer attention to the treatment of the horses. The show itslef was excellent.Really captured the essence of gambling and the pain that can go with it.
soo true
You worked with horses in the backside? Ouch. That’s gotta be tough way to make a living.
haha! good one!
The show was not canceled due to the death of the horses. They must think we’re that dumb.
The show sucked and they’re LUCKy to use the horses as a reason.
Read between the lines…
The town knows Milch was out looking for help. This gives an easy exit.
I love the crying and wailing of all the humanitarians on here (who probably eat meat and wear leather) over the deaths of three horses and seem to care nothing of the 150 people who are now out of work. Several lovely human beings who missed pilot season and now have to worry about how they will feed their families for the rest of the year.
Well that is the nature of working freelance, isn’t it? Besides, I didn’t hear the crew standing up to the Producers about the horse’s treatment.
To the person called: People over animals, you’re an idiot. Yes, they were freelance and that is the nature of freelance work. They could have used stock footage instead but did not. No one should ever justify cruelty to animals. Your comment speaks volumes about you.
If they really wanted to save the series, then why not use some of the thousands of horse racing footage available? Is recreating races for the series really that integral to the stories? Show them in the stalls, show them being walked out to the track, show them on the farms, if you need to show live animals. Then edit in a previously recorded race. Do jockey close-ups the old-fashioned way.
Compelling series! Best wishes to the studied writers, directors, actors, crew and production staff! You will be missed.
No one gets alcoholism and addiction like milch, he truly amazing, but perhaps a little too methodical and cerebral at times, especially for television. The teaming with mann made for some incredible visuals , but i think along the methodical/cerebral path, made for a bad combination of two true talents but honestly after watching the first three or four episodes, im gonna throw this out there….maybe the horses aren’t dead, maybe they just fell asleep.
INT. DAY – HBO Offices: “Umm can somebody get Doug Ellin & Spike Lee on the phone?!”
ugh, that would be killing tv ….
Great show. Think it would have picked up. The mob conflict had potential to go bonkers. I hit few pick sixes in my day.
Please, there’s gotta be a lot more to this story.
If they’re truly innocent, why act guilty??
According to the LA Times this morning, the necropsy of the first two horses to die indicated they had been in severe pain and drugged up to run.
NO excuse for that, as much as I loved and will miss this show.
There is no way that HBO shut it down because of the horses. More like the show wasn’t getting enough viewers and this was a golden opportunity to shut it down and save face. We all know that there is no way they woul have shut down if the show was a hit.
You know that HBO doesn’t need to worry about ratings. They have no advertisements, and their entire revenues comes from their subscription model. they frequently keep shoes that do poorly in the ratings and cut more popular shows because its about a reputation of high quality content. ps, you suck
Then why did they can Deadwood after two seasons? It was a VERY popular show with both fans and critics.
3 seasons. too expensive. BEST SHOW EVER!!! Haza!
Nope.
Person I know on the inside said they were going to shut it down if another horse died after the second one.
Yep… no doubt about it. It was not very good and too much of an insurance liability. I bet the insurance went up and they said….. let’s just put the show to bed.
My thoughts exactly
Seems like an extreme reaction, must be buoyed by something else. Maybe HBO is using this as a cover to cancel due to poor ratings?
Awful that those horses died during the production but there is more to it than that. They could have easily done more to make sure those animals were safe. What’s the real story David and Michael?
Oh, you’re an expert on animal care? David Milch himself has owned a horse (one that ran very successfully, in fact), so I’m sure the experts were consulted.
Tell me, just how “easily” these measures you speak of are to implement. And what are they? What WERE they doing, for that matter?
AC – clearly you know nothing about horses or their nature. Three horses die AT A RACETRACK during shooting? Not an accident. Not even close. This was incredibly bad horsemanship and I really want to know who the head wrangler was. This was gross neglect and criminally bad production safety protocols. No one can blame Milch, this is a wrangler/AD issue. I bet Milch is horrified by the sloppy, unprofessional and bad horsemanship evidenced on this production
Dan, you are right.
I enjoyed the show, and I also love racing.
These deaths are very sad, but is it possible that many or most of the horses used were in sub-par health, older, or seriously damaged? Were their racing days done? Were many of them already headed for slaughter? Perhaps this show actually gave some of them a shot at a better life, or any life for that matter. All just speculation, but I’m saddened by the loss of the horses and the show, too.
It MIGHT be remotely understandable if all the horses were injured (remember, the 3 were euthanized) recreating the races. Horses die every week at race tracks. But the third horse fell over backward and injured itself when it hit the ground on its way back to the stable. That’s an indication of an overworked and/or stressed out animal. No excuse for that.
You are sooooooo wrong Dan the last one reared that sort of accident happens every year on race tracks more often than people think
Q: How many dead horses does it take to cancel an HBO show
A: 3
This.
They should have cancelled it after the first horse’s death. What were they expecting, make a series about horse racing—a so-called “sport” where it is not uncommon for horses to break their legs or overwork themselves to the point of heart problems.
So yesterday the party line was, “This happens more than the public is aware…” simply a reality of life at a racetrack and unavoidable… Today it’s “We’re shutting down production.” I smell bull shit and horse shit mixed together. Guess it’s nice to have an excuse handed to you though.
It had less than 400,000 viewers per episode. The cast’s own relatives weren’t watching. Don’t believe the spin.
I guess they just had no luck!
Will they still air the rest of the first season?
Good to hear they are doing the right thing.
And in related news, Tony Soprano was mysteriously spotted around all 3 horses before they died. Coincidence? I think not.
no decent joke has ever started with the words “and in related news”
Could they not just use footage they didn’t use or CGI the horses to finish the second season, i didn’t get to see any of the first yet
1+ for the reboot with grayhounds bit, hay! we might try that over here in blighty or better yet pigeons
It is spelled greyhounds you idiot. Do you have any idea how bad greyhound racing is? Do some checking and see where most race horses end up….at the slaughter house. Your jokes a pathetic.
Calm down, holly, the troll-douche is just trying to get a response.
It wasn’t a joke, no, i have no idea how bad greyhound racing is, so, sorry for that but pigeons has to be o.k surly.
wow! No LUCK. Get It?
no, can you explain?
They don’t do this human beings. Extraordinary pc
Really? You think they wouldn’t stop a production that had 3 members of the cats or crew killed b/c of unsafe working conditions??
Maybe of the cats, but not of the crew.
“No one was hurt, just a couple of extras.”
If I ever pitch a TV show to HBO, I’ll be sure to include the phras “We promise not to kill any horses.”
What a bummer… even though I was apparently one of the few that watched, I thought it was a great show. I was hooked. I hope that they at least have an ending of some sort….
As we all know this was a good excuse to shut down a show that was failing on every level. Memo to HBO: Maybe you should look for the best scripts, not just the biggest names.
Preach.
Amen.
True dat.
memo to paco, if you’re so amazing, then you write something that is a hit
Then why did they let Entourage stay on? That was beating a dead horse for years.
Ha. You win the internet today.
That said, this was a great excuse to cancel the show. If horses died on Game of Thrones, they wouldn’t cancel it in a hundred years. Remember, two horses died first season before the ratings came out and HBO was totally cool with it.
DId they really? Didn’t know that, did they keep it quiet?
if you read the credits in some episodes it wont say “no animals were harmed” HBO was concerned about the horses all along and they were really iffy about this project after its terrible performance. Had it been a huge hit, they would hardly have cancelled and yes, it could have all been CGI
Just to clarify – that’s two horses died during Luck’s first season, not Game of Thrones.
COMMENT OF THE DAY!!
